It's so interesting, thinking back. In the summer of '86 I went through a C86 phase, influenced by the arty crowd at my college, so we listened to lots of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Psychobilly, Sisters of Mercy, David Bowie, The Soup Dragons, Shop Assistants... but I had already been a New Romantic for about five years at that point so still had those feelings completely... Then came the Summer of '88 and the clubbing, the raves... 808 State and The Beloved 'The Sun Rising'. So if you put ALL my inluences from the best decade ever into a big melting pot, you get Synthwave/Vaporwave, Synth-Pop and a bit of Post-Punk and New Wave. I mean how cool is that! Growing older has that bonus thing - you just appreciate the best bits and it's so life-enhancing!
@PoisonelleMisty43114 ай бұрын
That’s such a vivid and nostalgic journey through music and culture! The '80s really were a transformative decade, and it’s fascinating how those influences continue to resonate. You can hear the echoes of sounds from that era in modern genres like Synthwave and Vaporwave, which capture that retro-futuristic aesthetic and explore nostalgia in creative ways. C86 and its lo-fi, DIY ethos definitely paved the way for a lot of what came later, merging with the more polished synth-pop and the emotional intensity of post-punk. Your experience, from the New Romantic scene to the rise of club culture and acid house in the late '80s, reflects the eclecticism of that time. Each of those phases told a story and added layers to your musical identity. It’s amazing how our younger selves shaped our tastes and how those tastes evolve while still holding onto the essence of what we loved back then. Music has a unique way of enhancing life, capturing moments, and connecting us over the years. It must be quite fulfilling to look back and see how those influences have melded into your present appreciation of music! Do you have any particular tracks or albums that stand out for you from that time?
@LostwaveObsession4 ай бұрын
@@PoisonelleMisty4311 Gosh yes 100% this! :) Although I'm in my 50s I don't feel it at all, and I swear that so much of that is down to the music, and do feel so lucky to have been a teen during those 80s years! It's also great for the young generation as they have SO much more to listen to than I did, because there has been all these great Synthwave, Electroclash etc -style happenings since. I design record sleeves so am still very much living it still. I could mention loads of very obscure records but for me C86 fave would be The Cleaners From Venus 'Going To London' album up at the top, I'd say The Blue Nile 'Hats' album really has some v v early Vaporwave moments, and of course Kate Bush, especially Hounds Of Love album! I could go on forever though! What about you?
@PoisonelleMisty43114 ай бұрын
@@LostwaveObsession It sounds like you have a wonderful appreciation for music and its lasting impact! The 80s were such a vibrant time for genres like post-punk, new wave, and the emergence of synth music. The Cleaners From Venus' "Going to London" is a classic indeed, and it captures that DIY spirit perfectly. The Blue Nile's "Hats" is such a beautifully crafted album, blending lush soundscapes with emotive songwriting-definitely ahead of its time in certain ways, with those early vaporwave vibes. Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love" is iconic as well; her innovative use of storytelling and production techniques set a high bar for many artists that followed. It’s amazing how those songs can still resonate today. If I had to share a few favorites, I'd highlight artists like New Order for their pioneering electronic sound, and perhaps Cocteau Twins for their ethereal dream pop. The influence of those 80s artists on modern genres like synthwave and chillwave is undeniable, and it's fantastic to see that legacy continue. Your work designing record sleeves must be incredibly fulfilling too, as it keeps you connected to the music culture that you love!

whats so crazy about that era, when you travelled you were really doing it. No social media to already inform you about the place. You were alone and exploring. Now I travel across the world and facetime the moment I land. Its different, its not intimate as it used to be. People can find you 24/7.
@VaporwaveFm4 ай бұрын
Totally agree. Thanks for the love 🙌
@PoisonelleMisty43114 ай бұрын
You're capturing a bittersweet sentiment that many people feel about the changes in travel and exploration due to technology and social media. There was an era when traveling meant stepping into the unknown-experiencing a new place without prior images or constant updates from others. It allowed for a more intimate connection with the environment, as travelers would rely on their instincts, hear from locals, and create memorable experiences without the influence of online reviews or social media snapshots. In contrast, today's travel often feels more curated and shared, with the presence of social media allowing for real-time connections that can diminish the sense of solitude and discovery. While technology can enhance travel by providing instant information and connectivity, it can also create a sense of surveillance and expectation. The immediacy of being able to Facetime, post updates, or check in with others means that many experiences are shared in real-time, potentially taking away from the personal reflection and immersion that once characterized travel. Ultimately, both eras have their advantages and drawbacks. While modern technology makes travel more accessible and connected, it can also challenge the depth and intimacy of those experiences. Balancing the two-embracing the convenience of technology while seeking moments of genuine solitude and connection with the places we visit-can help recreate some of that magic from the past.
@ChrisDavis19754 ай бұрын
Technology has made the world a bit smaller feeling & connected us all in ways that are not always good. I’m almost 50 & the convenience of tech is nice, but it’s nice to “unplug” sometimes.
