I tried SYOS but the first mouthpiece was so far away from what I wanted that it took 3 versions of alterations to start to get even slightly close to where I wanted to be and by then I'd pretty much ran out of tries to get it right. If the third mouthpiece was my first one then I think I might have gotten to where I wanted to. The service and communication was first class and they really wanted to help and didn't hesitate in giving me my money back.

I found out about Syos last week and I am thinking of getting one of their mouthpieces at some point for my alto as its great you can customise it to get the sound you want. I like the colours they have, they certainly stand out over traditional mouthpieces. I like the sound you are getting and I like how you said its freeblowing. I was wondering if it would hold up to a hard rubber or metal mouthpiece since the Syos are plastic, but I am impressed. At the moment though, I currently use a Selmer S80 C** and I just ordered a JodyJazz HR* 7M to test as I am still trying to figure out what works for me first before spending more money than that on a mouthpiece as I have a slightly shorter bottom jaw than top jaw so certain mouthpieces may not work as well for me as others.

Cool concept for sure ! See they are in Paris by their website and take personal visits for a custom fitting. Gotta go check them out ! Thanks Dan

Dan. Thanks for sharing, you sounded great. I just got one of these a few days ago. I selected the custom option and modeled my mouthpiece off of the Eddie Rich sample but with a little more power and brightness like Chad Leftkowitz-Brown. I've been sidelined with a sprained tendon in my left hand, but I hope to try it out this weekend. I think the color you picked was great; I picked abyssal blue with a matching ligature.

Hello Dan, How does the mouthpiece respond in the altissimo range? I love your comment about how the design nails intonation, a common difficulty on vintage horns. Also could you comment further regarding resistance. You mentioned it is very free blowing but does it provide enough resistance to mould your sound? Cheers!

I agree with what he says at 08:47 about the sound. My thoughts exactly. I returned the first one I had for that very reason. The sound lacks a certain degree of life. To me it's similar to the flat sort of sound you get from a plastic or synthetic reed. It's fine for gigging on up tempo type stuff where the subtleties of the tone don't matter, but I wouldn't record with it. I actually ordered a different Syos mpc though when they went on sale. They aren't bad and they feel great to play on, and they make altissimo and intonation a breeze... but the sound is just not a replacement for my rubber link.

I agree about the lacking something. I got a custom SYOS alto mouthpiece to try it. I normally play on a Selmer S80 C** as its the one mouthpiece I have tried that gives me the smooth sound I am after without sounding buzzy as most thin tip mouthpieces I have played usually do. I wanted to see if SYOS could make me a mouthpiece like the S80 C** but make it slightly brighter with a more free blowing, projecting sound as while I like the S80, I wanted slightly less resistance and playing a Vandoren AL5 while less resistant didn't quite have the sound I was after. I asked for the same 1.65mm tip which they said they'd do after initially saying it was going to be 1.80mm. It has a medium chamber. I also mentioned to SYOS that so far any thin tip mouthpiece I have played gives me a slightly buzzy sound but thicker tip mouthpieces like my S80 don't and that is what I want. When I got it, I noticed the around the circular part at the back of the mouthpiece shank where it fits onto the neck didn't look 100% as it looked like there is small gaps in the plastic in places but had no other issues. It had a good fit on my alto neck though and to get it to play in tune I had to put it half way on the neck, further back than any mouthpiece I have played. I play on Legere Signature reeds and when playing the SYOS, I had to go up 1/2 a strength higher than I normally play. I tried it with several ligatures including the one that it comes with to see if different ligatures change how if sounds/feels to play and they did but not that much although I did like my BG Duo gold lacquer on it the most, its more centred with a slight resistance. Playing it, I found its a good mouthpiece even if it looks and feels cheap. It is comfortable to play on and doesn't have the same vibration feeling on my teeth some hard rubber mouthpieces give me, its also really free blowing and for being so free blowing, I was surprised how it remained relativity easy to keep in tune, more so than my S80 which is more resistant. I found the sound a little buzzy with a kind of an ever so slight fizz/fuzz like sound. I read that is caused by the mouthpiece table not being smooth and you can get rid of that sound by having the table smoothed out. It felt though like the tone was too straight and lacked some depth/variation and I just couldn't get as smooth of a sound as I wanted and can get on my S80. The mouthpiece actually felt, sounded and played quite like my JodyJazz HR* C* or 5M as it has a thin tip and medium chamber and is very free blowing except it wasn't as hard feeling due to being made of plastic and I prefer the sound I get on the JodyJazz a little more. Very good mouthpieces, just not for me.

Wow Dan, that thing sounds amazing. I already like your sound but to my ears that got it to another level. I was tempted the other day and got to the payment and bottled it due to not hearing one. Now my mind may have been turned. Keep up the good work and let's hope they can solve the nerve damage 👍

You are achieving excellent tone from the mouthpiece, but I have to wonder about the ligature. I am used to ligatures with a screw to tighten the ligature around the reed. Do you think that a non-adjustable ligature has any advantage over the conventional ones? I wonder if they will last well over a period of years.

Hi Dan, sounds great, what parameters did you set in the Syos shop for your tenor mpc? I see that they are ordered on a scale from dark to bright and a power scale. Cheers

Just found it Dan, on your equipment page. Brightness 3.7 Power 7.5 Really interesting when you said it might be a little brighter than you were expecting, cos I was playing on the Syos site with options varying from 3.0 to 3.5 brightness and 6.5 to 7.0 power. So I might split the difference and go for a 3.3 brightness and 7.0 power
