I wish someone would do a subtractive synthesis 101 course: this is a sine wave, this is a saw wave... this is what happens when a sine mixes with a sine, this is what happens when you mix a sine and triangle... an envelope filter does this, an amplifier filter does that... oscillators mixed into waves can be filtered and then amplified, etc. etc....

Surely the journey/fun is all about doing it yourself ?

Tone sounds like a cross between Minimoog and SH-5. More patchable than either. :)
@RobPapen6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 2nd filter, with the multiple outputs is very similar to SH-5. I had a SH-5 for a few years.

8:40. My conclusion here: if you really want to get out of the eternal Oscillator-Filter-Amplifier-box, you cannot have enough multipliers? You cannot just "stack" connections into one CV- or signal input? (apart from the mechanics of the connection cords of course)
@RobPapen4 жыл бұрын
I am not fully sure what you mean. But for stacking audio inputs, you essentially would need a mixer if you like to have volume control. The output from the oscillator mixer in my case is having a split cable and then it goes into both types of filters. It might lose some volume because of this, but it doesn't cause issues. Multipliers for audio, possible but it could mean that you lose some volume. Multipliers are most commonly used to share CV and Gate things to different modules.

I would like to see this updated for download or access via a website only. Unless if you have a DVD player... (not many) or a computer that plays (not many) you're out in the cold. Any chance for an update on this product?

The book has been reprinted and there is also an eBook version. The video content is in the cloud. Drop us a note at info @ robpapen.com for more information on where the get hold of it.

RP could create a modular synth vsti, that would be interesting
@RobPapen7 жыл бұрын
Well, that is just the point. For instance Predator 2 can do anything what a modular synth can do. If we would show the 'wires' in some patches, you would not see the dials anymore. If you don't see wires, doesn't mean that there are allot connections made. But of course, for the fun and investigating how subtractive synthesis works...this would be fun.

Hi will this book be mostly about modulars? I have the studio 88. I have only "Basic" patch so far. (O man at 13:22 bandpass that would so killer with a TR-909)
@RobPapen6 жыл бұрын
It is about subtractive synthesis. This training gives you fundamental insight to this type of synthesis. And sure, you can apply this to modular. In fact, modular are great to learn synthesis because you see all the connections.

how would you rate this against the System500 by Roland soundwise and in terms of overall usefulness or bang for buck..? Does the osc module pump out all different waveshapes simultanously? thx for taking time
@RobPapen6 жыл бұрын
Since I haven't a System 500 it is hard to compare. The oscillators has multiple outputs indeed. But you need to have a mixer module to combine them.

Deze heb ik al 8 jaar of zo. Kijk bij synthesizers.com voor de actuele prijs. Bij mijn book/dvd pagina kun je mijn setup zien, welke modules ik heb gebruikt.

Is the book mostly about modulars?
@RobPapen7 жыл бұрын
No, it is about 'subtractive synthesis' and how to work with it. So it is from modular to regular subtractive synthesizers. It teaches in a way that you can work with 'any' subtractive synthesizer.
