Everyone should do this back and do a separate backup of their Data/files.

Thank you for demonstrating the restore process. So many explainer articles and videos talk about how to create backups, but never take you through the steps to restore.

Finally I understand how to use it. Thanks, dude.

at 3:36 please explain me how to add patterns for ex i'm opting to backup the home directory but there's a huge folder called "gnome-boxes" in /home/user/snap/ directory which i do not want to backup, i do not want timeshift to include this folder, its files, folders and contents of those subfolders should i put pattern as: /home/user/snap/gnome-boxes/ or /home/user/snap/gnome-boxes/* or /home/user/snap/gnome-boxes/** or /home/user/snap/gnome-boxes/*** and in which order i should place these patters THank you
@KrystalOfComputer11 ай бұрын
Ok so you will first need to users tab to include your home dir. Then you need to switch to filters tab, there you will see "/home/user/**" with a "+" checked, assuming you added the home folder correctly in the users tab. Then you need to click add folder button and select the gonme-boxes folder there. Then "/home/user/snap/gnome-boxes/***" should show up and it needs to have "-" selected with a dot, but it will be a bottom line most Likley. This is important, for it to work you need to drag it to the top of the list, above your home folder entry. So your final list should look like - /home/user/snap/gnome-boxes/*** + /home/users/** When it comes to paths i am going along with your example so user should be replaced with your real username. Of course you need to make sure everything works and that it makes sense for your system, after all you know it best and you are responsible for it. Easy way to make sure it works is to make a backup and go into it with a browse button and see if the problematic folder is gone. Hope this helps!

Time shift broke my system one time lol and had no way of going back. I ran out of storage and messed up a lot of things so be careful and watch your storage on your computer when running a backup. I was on Pop OS so could be different on other distros.

Timeshift is gonna want a Linux file system to backup to. This is great for rolling back malicious or buggy software, but a separate drive should be used for catastrophic failures.

Good one and great explanation... Thank you... Just one question... Is there any way to program your backups at a certain timestamp , e.g daily at 00:00 ?????????? Thanks again..

Man, I think I really messed up my system. I stupidly just left everything on defaults and finally wanted to do a restore, which I left on defaults, now it won't boot. I can't even get the cursor blinking by pressing Ctrl alt f2 On the boot screen. Tried booting into a different kernel. I wonder what I did wrong

I did system update and then shut down my system. After hours to a cold boot red text appeared saying failure to boot efi vmlinuz?

Can Timeshift be used to restore a machine but in a new installation? Eg. If due to space issues, I decide to make a fresh install (same user and file structure) but using a bigger drive in the same hardware (or a very similar one), instead of trying to clone the disk, can I just use a Timeshift restore point saved in an external device to do that?

What if the yay update screws the system so bad you can't load timeshift to load a snapshot? Seems like you boot into a live USB and then run the restore unto the partition.

yea, that's the idea

Why does everyone say Timeshift should not be used to backup personal files? I've used it for that (in the past) and it seemed fine.
@KrystalOfComputer10 ай бұрын
It can be used for backing up personal files or almost any other kind of files, but its not its purpose. For example imagine your system breaks, and you need to restore a last week snapshot, now if you are only backing up system files your system gets restored and your personal files are fine. But if you are backing up your personal files too, all your personal files that you made in the last week are gone. If you really want i guess you can make separate snapshots for your personal files and your system on multiple partitions but at that point other solutions are way easier. Anyway that are my main reason for calling it system backup solution. Have a nice day!

@@KrystalOfComputer I'm new in linux, but i also use Pika Backup for up to date personal files copies, Timeshift+PikaBack-up nice combo i think.. But most Linus dis., Popos as an example is also easily reinstalled on a new drive

After making a snapshot, it does not appear in the list in the gui although the main drive has got 10GB less free space due to the backup being created. Any ideas ?
@KrystalOfComputer9 ай бұрын
I never had that happen, you can try selecting the snapshots location again or checking permissions, if nothing works delete snapshot folder manually and try again

Wait, you jumped right into the info without saying how to access Timeshift in the first place. I am using Ubuntu, but I cannot find Timeshift in the apps or in the app center or as flat pack. What is the command for Timeshift in the terminal to download it or activate it??

The most confusing part gets skipped over. Under the Settings for "Users" this guy tells us only to include hidden files. Then on the Settings he tells it to include all the files in his home directory. This is not helpful. But he clearly doesn't understand it himself.

I prefer using clonezilla and backing up the whole image to external drive every week, I have been burnt in past in both windows and linux using their proprietary system restore and this timeshift plus cloning is 10 times faster than this hoola hoop.
