System Shock 1 Intro

Imagine being used to games like doom and get this game expecting most of the same and see this intro probably mind blowing because you wouldn't expect a cutscene like this in doom ever!

@@coda5153 Not for want of trying ;-) and no, I haven't played CP. Probably never will. I had a problem with Witcher 3 because I felt that CDPR were focusing on world building too much and letting gameplay slide. CP just looks like they doubled down on that and didn't even bother finishing it. I'll buy it when it's < £10, fixed and modded to the teeth.

My favorite part of this intro is when SHODAN switches from third person to first person narration. What once was a simple voiceover suddenly becomes a very potent world-building tool. She's no longer just an executive AI, she has grown a personality, an ego, an agenda. And that agenda has no place for squishy human insects.

Well it was running on a PC. Still really advanced cutscene since games just a few years before this had 0 cutscenes and were pixel. This was the start of the 3D video game era. Very impressive game

The guy hacked Trioptimum to steal public information, got caught seconds after doing so, and managed to turn Citadel's glorified personal assistant into a bloodthirsty god-like being.

Many evil AI in video games got there start here, but it's as if this very game deconstructs all of them. There was nothing inevitable about SHODAN turning evil or gaining a god complex. The creators deliberately put safeguards in so that such a thing would never happen, because of course they did. The true danger was humans who would circumvent those safeguards for personal gain.

I mean, cyber punk is kind of... futurey punky new wave shit. OH and immoral mega corps fighting for market dominance and even started a corporate war until the group in system shock 2 managed to regulate them to avoid another SHODAN incedent

@@lemonov3031 I mean yeah, I know the tones of anti-corporationism but nobody thinks about that when Cyberpunk is mentioned. Also in lore of System Shock it is hinged at that corporations gained so much power that they did not only just create privetised towns but entiee countries. The UNN, steps in after the shitshow that was the citadel and regulates corporations by doing biggy fighty fight. Main point is, it is clearly hinted in System shock that none of the corporations were up to any good and had ruined society in very subbtle ways. Not sure if the game goes out of its way to critique capitalism tho, sure you could dig up some sort of "Big corp bad" I think.

Lmao, neither is any other first game in any series. It is the first game though and since there was a second game that was released, that was way more popular than the first, so it obviously makes sense to call this system shock 1.
