"The bleaker the world, the greater opportunity for heroism." This is EXACTLY why GDI is one of my favorite factions in fiction, especially the Tib Sun era. They're not perfect by any means - it's clear that they have prejudices as we see with their relations with the Forgotten being frosty at best when TS starts, and Solomon ran a mean game with Hassan - but despite that... they're genuinely trying to save everyone. They're here to protect humanity from tiberium, even if in this era the best that GDI has is running away from the alien murder rocks. Nod probably got as far as they did because between cyborgs and the promise of Divination, by comparison Nod sounded like they had an actual plan. Yet GDI never gave the false hope that Nod did with their promises of Divination and becoming a divine people as humanity died mortally - they stuck to their guns and kept trying to save everyone. I came into the series with Tiberium Wars, but even though I prefer it as a game as far as a setting goes... Tib Sun was exactly where the series hit the right tones. It's bleak, but that bleakness doesn't mean that there aren't people trying to make the best of it. Lone Trooper as a track perfectly encapsulates GDI in my opinion - it's grim, it's dark, it's melancholy... but pushing through that and building steam is a defiant hope that sings clear, even if it is still melancholic. And aesthetically, you're right: TS felt like an actual terraformed world (especially Firestorm which really leaned into the tiberium flora and fauna), and that GDI and Nod were fighting through the ruins which also were mixed in with shiny new prefabs. By contrast, TW just made the Yellow Zones generic dusty ruins like it's Hollywood southwest Asia and the Red Zones were just the same with some tib glaciers, with no signs of the locals doing anything but live in decaying ruins. Tib Sun at least showed us people adapting and trying to build something, even if that quickly became weathered as well. Reclamation was basically just a background element tacked on rather than something front and center in the war. And of course, the swapping from Divination to Ascension giving Nod a complete rewrite that I think lost a chunk of their charm as amazing villains in contrast to GDI. All in all, a great analysis! Really glad you made it and that it popped into my recommended list at home after seeing it while jumping between music to listen to at work.

Fantastic treatise, no joke. I loved reading through your thoughts on the Tiberium universe. Yeah, I didn't mind C&C3 breaking the Earth into 3 zones, but I hated their take on Red Zones. Like you said, just giant Tiberium glaciers, but no Forgotten, no mutant creatures, no ion storms, no veinholes. Also, your take on Nod makes me want to replay Nod's TibSun campaign and do a video essay on them.
@Arenumberg6 күн бұрын
I think its fair to say that the Red Zones had just become a complete hell, a resource field ready for harvest, the end state - the Scrin weren't looking for anything to still exist at that point, not even tiberium life. Yellow Zones were a bit of an iffy one, but it was a good reflection of Nod being out of the game for a while, whilst GDI poured all its resources into their blue zones, and the saving grace of finding tiberium's resonance from the tacitus, getting that sonic tech and putting it to securing and even in one case pushing out those blue zones that they could. Its one of those stages we don't normally get to see in Post Apocalyptic fiction - where the end of the world as it was has happened, but it didn't do the whole job, the way to pull something back was found and is now being used in that "rebuilding" era, which is one that is often alluded to but rarely shown.
@GeneGear5 күн бұрын
I think the problem with TW was that they left behind the mutating ecosystem of Firestorm in exchange for generic crystalization of everything. Literally, they just went "naw, all tib-mutated life just upped and died, and what little still survives is slated for death too." Where in firestorm the constant brown was contrasted by bright phosphoretic neon life (which was absolutely a trend-setter for alien ecosystems from then-on), they just went full brown for TW with on occasion massive chunks of Tiberium. And that made it aesthetically not as pleasing to look at. And also broke their own lore in the process. The whole point behind the Scrin, Forgotten, and Nod, was that Tiberium WAS survivable...just not for a baseline human. That Tiberium was an evolutionary catalyst that WOULD bring new life, even if that new life was violent and horrible. That the battle between Nod and GDI was one over post-humanism vs. "a place safe for children to play." And instead of focusing on the human elements and overcoming, they just made TW typical post-apocalyptic: Tiberium=bad and Kane=bad because Kane=Tiberium. Instead of "Kane is bad because he isn't helping out the Red Zones as much as he pretends to do so, which causes tension among brotherhood leadership who want to save their people no matter the cost after being abandoned by GDI" they went "Kane secretly has good intentions yet bad methods, and the Brotherhood is bad because it is made up of selfish and greedy people that only Kane's religious fanaticsm keeps in check. GDI is objectively good, but keeps breaking the secrets to actually fixing the planet. Oh no, Scrin happened! Will these two factions come together to kick alien ass? NOPE! Kane isn't even human to begin with, and has instead been manipulating everyone into pointless wars just so that he can escape the planet (thank you title-that-shall-not-be-named-for-the-sin-of-killing-the-franchise)". Instead of...you know...waiting around for a few more centuries for humanity to naturally achieve spaceflight. Like, Kane could have just become a GDI scientist and worked his way up the political ladder, and could have achieved EVERYTHING he ever wanted, while not having to herd a flock of psychotically-religious cats and warlords with chronic backstabbing disorder. I get the point he was trying to attract the Scrin, and needed a really big bang for that to happen; but they very much portray him as focusing too much on R&D to actually pay attention to the administration and politics of his own goddamn organization.
@yami1223 күн бұрын
One thing I strongly disliked About Tiberium Wars Was that Kane is just arbitrarily back all of a sudden with no explanation And no one seemed surprised by his appearance so he's obviously been back for a bit And they pulled back from the Sci Fi elements both in the story and in the factions themselves with both earth factions having technology not that much more advanced than the first games going back to just normal tanks and planes And as you pointed out the scenario and the earth around everything doesn't seem as science fiction he as the second games with just Tiberian glaciers In the red zones and no more ion storms or exotic life and I really dislike that that both the forgotten as well as the Tiberium life forms that we're starting to form in the second game are just mostly gone and even the method that Tiberium used to spread was made less exotic and was more simplified where it just spreads from itself instead of using heavily mutated trees Although actually I would argue that kane was ultimately the good guy of the story As you discover at the end of the third game's expansion pack as well as in the nod ending of the second game that He was correct about Tiberium and the importance in changing to adapt to Tiberium it is not majorly focused on there is the background element to that the global defense initiative is basically Working to protect the first world Countries Europe and the United States and that the global defense initiative is largely made up of rich countries with poorer countries abandoned and exploited while the Brotherhood although it does target civilians it is ultimately working to serve the interests of the greater bulk of humanity there are more human beings in the Brotherhood of nods Territories than there are in the global defense initiatives territories

@@hhc_snowmangaming3309 Glad you enjoyed! Maybe one day I'll get around to using them (I've got an Arcane/C&C T fic that I've been slowly cooking this past year as an excuse to really delve into the neglected of the tiberium 'verse and the fun parallels with the Arcane cast, but while I've got a ton of the worldbuilding it's at a point where I gotta write the story...) Yeah, if the C&C 3 RZ's were a "Red Zone desert" in contrast to the Firestorm's "Red Zone jungle" but we saw both, I think it would've been fine. Even if the Scrin wanted everyone dead (and this is something created in C&C 3 so we need to mind that), the Scrin existing would mean that it is possible for there to be tiberium-based life. The mutated ecosystem may not have been well suited for the multiplayer sphere, but it would've been perfect for campaign and building the world if our Red Zone deployments had the environment be as much of an enemy as the Scrin or other human faction. Instead we just get the glaciers and no garrison buildings, play as usual like being able to send in standard infantry rather than being forced to rely on Zone Troopers. Haha, glad you liked the take on Nod! It's a really fun faction to delve into and figure out because you've got a combination of psuedo-Abrahamic history and myth, mad science, warlords, and also Nod trying to bolt everyone they could into the faction to create a many-headed hydra and welding it into a cohesive whole. They talk a big game about helping people, but it's actually against their interests to deliver in full because they rely on whipping up mass anger to distract from the fact that Nod's promises of Divination never actually panned out (or what has panned out like Tiberium Infusion is conspicuously *not* used on anyone but expendable bullet fodder and suicide bombers)... but they also have genuine believers and all the potential shenanigans there as everyone takes it a bit differently. Is Divination a giving up our humanity to become something utterly alien, or just adapting our genome to handle tiberium?

A few notes: * Carter was in the gunboats assaulting a Nod base that would be the first sighting of the Nod Obelisk. He did not survive that, so he didn't get the chance to succumb to his tiberium illness. * The Tiberium fiends might be called "DOGGIE" internally in Tiberian Sun's internals, but I doubt they are mutated dogs; they very clearly resemble pigs/hogs, even having visible tusks on the sprites. * Veinholes are _not_ actually new in Tiberian Sun; while they didn't appear in-game in Tiberian Dawn, one was already shown in a cutscene of a helicopter flying over a tiberium-infested desert. Note that visceroids also already existed in Tiberian Dawn; they spawn randomly in the game's multiplayer mode.

Kanes lack of ageing becomes even more curious when you see his appearance goes unchanged from the second world war (aided stalin and soviets from red alert) all the way to TW3. From world war 2 (alt 1950s) to TW3 Kanes Wrath (2052) he has lived over 100 years unchanged as far as we know. Renegade also hints that Kane may be the original Kane from the bible, as a shrine dedicated to the killing of Abel as a special spot for the leader as he says "careful Parker, you tread on sacred ground".
@vonshroom20686 күн бұрын
Correct but he does die everytime you defeat Nod. He just doesn't stay dead is all. Kane died in Tiberium Dawn. Kane died in Tiberium Sun. Cabal "Kane as a murder AI" died in Firestorm. Kane dies in Tiberium wars. In Firestorm it is revealed in the end Kane was Cabal and had a meriad of clone/resurection tubes ready for Tiberium wars. Also in renegade we get reminded of the Kane resurection tubes. My main gripe in Kanes wrath (or was it tiberium wars?) is that they had to really show the metal casing wasn't attached to him linking to him being another resurected clone. They could have done a bit better with the make up making the reveal a bit more surprising for those that don't know Kane keeps cloning/resurecting himself since the dawn of man. Also it would have been nice for Kane to be revealed as the defacto outcome of red alert 2 and 3 making his omnipotence even more compelling. As for the one we do not talk about they really botched the story assuming everyone knew who and what Kane was. And then leaving with not a hint as to what would come next.

*_"The world will end not with a bang, but a whimper. Quiet, stagnant and green."_* - That's world of Tiberian Sun in nutshell. I'm also big fan of C&C franchise since early childhood and TS was my first game ever in the series. Hell, not long ago I ordered avatar of GDI soldier based of fanarts and graphics from the friend (looks great so far btw). The series and this installment in particular are surely underrated. But the one thing that always keeps me enthralled with this universe is the irony of the whole ordeal: that our silent killer is also our omnipotent savior. *_We hate it, but we can't live without it._* And Joe Kucan playing as Kane is just so iconic you can't turn away.

Thanks for making this. I often tell people this is one of my favourite dark apocalyptic universes and they look at me surprised cause they'd either forgotten it or thought of it as a scifi game. RA2 is prob my favourite in the series for gameplay but for me nothing beats CnC2 Tiberian Sun for atmosphere and universe. I loved all those night missions and green tiberian fields glowing in the darkness. I loved all the cutscenes and the actors involved even more! Assembled together they actually make a pretty cool cheesy retro 90s apocalyptic scifi film hence why you see people putting them all together as a 'movie' on youtube. The fact that to this day we have more and more truly amazing fan mods (eg Twisted Insurrection, Shattered Paradise, Tiberium Crisis, Tiberium Resurrection, Crystallized Doom etc) coming out continuing the Tiberian Sun story shows just how powerful and immersive CnC2's world was. Hell it's dark apocalyptic world also inspired me to make a Tiberian Africa scenario for Sid Meier's Civilization 2 which I'll be releasing soon! I really hope EA let Petroglyph remaster CnC2 one day!

Anyway, was interesting stuff about the campaign in C&C 1 - being a dumb kid at the time, I didn't get any of that foreshadowing. It's interesting to think that Westwood really must have been thinking ahead for what they wanted to do with the universe later on. On a surface level, the plot/premise for C&C 1 seemed quite simplistic, so it's surprising to see there was depth the whole time.

@Redeyes08154 күн бұрын
I agree with you on many points. I do like Tiberium Wars, especially because it combines newer elements from Generals with classic elements from C&C (e.g. you have the classic construction bar on the edge, but it is now organized in such a way that you can still operate several weapons factories, barracks, etc. at the same time, instead of only producing in one and additional factories only giving a bonus to the construction speed), that you learn something about the possible origins of the aliens and Tiberium with the Scrins, or that the story has now been written in such a way that the events of the two campaigns complement each other instead of contradicting each other (and thus the story of Nod is basically simply declared "non-canon" with the next part), but I think it's a real shame that they have "backtracked" from the more futuristic setting. EA has tried to explain why it looks like GDI and Nod have regressed technologically, or why Tiberium now behaves completely differently, but in my opinion it doesn't really make sense. Tiberium is now described as a self-replicating crystal that simply converts all matter it comes into contact with into Tiberium (which should explain why there are no more crater monsters, flowering trees or other strange Tiberium flora and fauna... I think they even wanted to remove blue Tiberium at the beginning wtf...) but they have apparently overlooked the fact that this makes no sense. Tiberium is so valuable because it sucks nutrients and minerals out of the ground, spreads as a result and is easy to harvest. If you change that, it would no longer make sense to harvest Tiberium (at least as a resource, liquid Tiberium research excluded for now). The same goes for weapons technology, according to EA, for example, the GDI shut down their mechs (except for the Juggernaut) because they were too expensive to produce and maintain and so they switched back to classic tanks (which feels like a step backwards). Yeah, sure, if there's one thing we know then it's that the modern military pays more attention to reliability than to efficiency (in order to keep maintenance, logistics and personnel costs low, training an infantry soldier is probably easier than a highly specialized engineer) so the mechs from Tiberian Sun were efficient and reliable enough for years to keep them in service for over 20 years and now they're suddenly too expensive and maintenance-intensive? nope... I don't buy that from EA... especially since Nod is fielding their own mech unit with the Avatar... and there are many examples like that... as much as I like the Vertigo Bomber, even it feels like a step backwards compared to the Banshees... (but to be fair, Tiberium Wars also has a lot of good units that feel like a step forward, such as Venoms, Zone Troopers, FireHawks or the Avatar mentioned above).
@hhc_snowmangaming33094 күн бұрын
Yeah, I agree. Tiberium needs to still be leeching ores and materials from the ground or else why are they are harvesting it? I always assumed Tiberium still was even if it was never said outright that it was. C&C3 is a mixed bag for me, but I do still love it, too. I can't help but love Mammoth Mk. III tanks despite my love of the walkers, Zone Troopers are awesome and would be way more useful if Tiberium spread everywhere on the map. But Nod developing walkers never sat right with me, personally.

So true. I first saw Tib Sun when i was 7, I was more into Starcraft at the time and thought it was just another (and inferior, cause it lacked the flashiness of SC) sci-fi strategy game set in space. So it came as a surprise when I revisited the game much later, paying attention to the story this time, and found out it was set on Earth all along. Overall I find the transition between the original C&C and Tib Sun to be really cool, how the GDI - NOD war that started in '95 keeps going even after the rest of the world has basically died, like it's the only constant. C&C3 made the mistake of focusing too much on the blue zones, at least in the GDI campaign, Kane's Wrath seemed closer to that desolate atmosphere
@hhc_snowmangaming33095 күн бұрын
Agreed. I don't mind the focus on the Blue Zones in C&C3 since reclamation was learned from the Tacitus at the end of Firestorm, but I really wish the Red Zones still mutated flora and fauna instead of just causing mass extinction. Also, yes, I love the changes Kane's Wrath made. Steel Talons rule!

@hhc_snowmangaming33097 күн бұрын
@@ironresolveminiatures I agree, this is true for the Blue Zones and Yellow Zones, as the sonic resonant frequency to break down Tiberium was found in the partially decoded Tacitus at the end of Firestorm (a bit of an EALA retcon, but still). The Red Zones, however, I would argue should look worse than Firestorm depicted the Genesis Pit, but it doesn't. And that's largely due to the limitations of the SAGE engine EALA was using to make C&C games by this point.

This was my first game ever played. My dad bought the edition that came with the art book and the figurines. I always thought it was the coolest game when I would watch him and then when I was allowed, I loved playing it. The desolate atmosphere mixed with the music really brought everything together. I do wish the gameplay had a bit more polish, but we can blame EA for rushing its release. As a young kid, I was too afraid of the mission where you're guarding the "Scrin" ship, and it's an all out desperate fight against Nod amidst an ion storm. Everything seems lost until the storm breaks and drop ships come down and rescue your limited forces. The mystery around the Scrin was nicely hinted at. And I agree about the fight for humanity and the hope it instills in you. The art book has a section I think the audience here would find really cool. It's a section where EVA is assessing GDI personnel: "GDI troops are ambitious and hard working, cooperative and loyal. These twenty-first marines want both peace and honor. More than that, they want to win - to destroy all traces of the Brotherhood of Nod. Rank and file GDI troops are unconditionally devoted to each other, to their squadron leaders, and to their highest commander, General Solomon."

@hhc_snowmangaming3309 I just moved and am currently in the process of scanning the pages (the binding is withering away lol) so I can have it digitally. It's really cool. Breaks down the factions, gameplay, and behind the scenes info. There's even a part telling you about Tiberium and how it has been spreading over the years. There might be an online version somewhere too.

@@republic9299 Thanks! I'll definitely be searching for a digital version online. I used to read the game manual over and over as a kid.

I wish the Tiberian Sun atmosphere/wildlife continued in C&C 3, but a lot of that was completely left behind. Nice to see someone new taking a shot at C&C content!

Unfortunately, the SAGE engine used in C&C3 limited a lot of EALA's ability to make TibSun-like gameplay elements.

The Tiberium universe. The first fictional strategy game setting I recall where I prefer playing as the bad guys. Attack Bikes are the greatest ground unit in the Tiberium setting only matched by the GLA Bikes from Generals which start as Anti-infantry units but can be easily converted into Anti-vehicle units.
