I liked SS1 more, this just seems like any metroidvania but with less enemies and a confusing stat system with constant gun jams. Why do gamers constantly overrate things? Bad enough so many worship half life and toxic ass valve, a frickin boring ass checkpoint shooter. Not saying SS2 sucks, its ok, I wanna beat it for the story. It was nowhere near as fun, quirky, or addictive as SS1 to me.

I think what helps the game's dread is the audio logs of people succumbing to the many. So creepy to hear them go from being bored or annoyed at their job to then talk about being a part of a chorus or helping the many out via sabotaging systems or the like. Seriously those audio logs feel criminally under rated sometimes and what makes the game so great for me personally.
@miscellaneousmedia3753 Жыл бұрын
I agree, in most games when they add audio logs or extra flavor text like this, it's usually useless stuff or just pop culture references, these audio logs are intentional and really help you understand what went on while you were asleep, and "MY CUP RUNNETH OVER" clip is definitely the most unnerving one

To think that I literally got most of my English accent, general semantic reflexes and idiomatic expressions from the countless audio logs littering the entirety of this game. No joke. I remember making a growing impression on my teacher back in high school as I researched stuff that I couldn't make out while I put together bits and pieces to understand the rest from context and conjecture. I still use constructs I inherited from this game exactly 19 years ago this trimester. Gosh it doesn't make me feel younger one bit. I mean "rent-a-something" (From Diego's rent-a-cop), to Devereux''s "the stakes we're dealing with", stuff like that were all over the place and it was great that way :D Indeed, on top of its many other interesting if not pioneering attributes, one has to give credit to the inherent narrative qualities of this game. Many have mimicked but few proved that solid on that angle at the time it released, bar maybe Deus Ex. But I guess many of the latter's makers from all horizons involved were one and the same recruits from one team to the other. I mean Ion Storm, Looking Glass, mostly the same nice folks at the time :) PS : I felt pain whenever you wasted those precious pistol bullets on walkers with no ranged-weapons. You sir, love living dangerously low on ressources xD I recall stacking up while spending much of the game on the venerable wrench then the pseudo light-saber. Great and courageous video anyway, I wouldn't ever be caught playing through that hell again today, had too much of a physical toll on me despite all the welcome immersion and intensity back then. There are challenges you're only able to pull once. Gotta keep the energy for the upcoming System Shock I remake there !

Great physics, really good engine, sound and overall design with no pointless "running around and shooting" only approach. The best games ever. I think game designers should revert back to this engine and learn about physics aspects etc.
@chakko0075 жыл бұрын
These games hail from times when there wasn't such a commercial pressure on the publishers and developers. Also, a lot of nowadays' developers just lack the finesse, creativity and intelligence, and that's why the games are so dumb and uncreative these days. Check out Prey from Arkane Studios/Bethesda though. It's very much in the vein of System Shock. Actually, some even call it System Shock 3. :) It's a refreshing exception which shows that some developers still make great games these days, even when they're being developed under one of the big publishers. Denoting though, just like the great Dishonored series, it wasn't a success really. That's another thing, the audience. Just plain stupid nowadays.
@NeoFreezz5 жыл бұрын
they take a lot of effort to make, not to mention the audience of the current generation has too short of attention span to enjoy this type of game. this leads to simplified gameplay and design in order to keep the action pace fast enough. AAA publishers wants to spend the least amount of money to pump out money makers so they stick with the safe route and go with whatever is in the hype at the moment instead of innovation.
@locksmith47075 жыл бұрын
They're not RPGs especially not Thief games, lol. Thief games had sound design they had because their stealth gameplay was designed around non-visual cues, mainly sound (how far guards are, where are they relatively to your position, how much sound you make and so on is all mostly based on sound in these games) so in order for that approach to work they had to have stellar sound design. System Shock 2 just reused that engine but they utilized its capabilities for building the horror atmosphere and give players additional feedback regarding enemies. P.S. Overall design of System Shock 2 sucks monkey balls which is evident in poor balance of RPG systems (Exotic and Research skills being plain up useless,Energy weapons getting quickly out of favor, Laser Rapier being completely useless weapon that also needs rather heavy investment in stats to wield it, Assault Rifle declassing everything in the game, Hacking is required to complete the game unless you hoard ICE picks), second half of the game being drastically of lower quality than the first half or stuff like too much 'punishments' inviting player to play "wrenching aliens' simulator.
