A lot of apps use GTK and Qt. It would be cool if Cosmic creates themes for both toolkits that look consistent and follow user preferences.

that's likely what they'll have to do. Pop!OS uses flatpak quite heavily already so i bet they'll leverage its theming plugins for those apps too

Regarding notifications: GNOME devs were like "the system tray should die! No more app indicators for you!" 5 years later... They're slowly bringing everything back to a system tray like design - but now it's all new protocols that no one else is implementing...

9:22 Actually, it's even more complicated. It will always scale the windows with full integer numbers. So, if you want your windows to be scaled at 175%, the windows will be rendered at 700% and then divided by 4.

I really really really like the direction they chose for theming. Extensive theming is often problematic and complex for both userbase and developers. When I use plasma I almost never theme much because it's very hard to find a theme that you like and it's consistent (so has icons, shell theme, applications theme, ideally also a gtk theme) and it's supported and updated. So I usually just stick to Breeze or Breeze dark and only change a couple colors and button placement. Having an entire coherent color scheme generated for me out of 4 base colors I choose seems like a perfect balance between simplicity for users+developers and personalization. Also roundness of corners and margins is something that's a very small detail but is very important for a lot of people including me. This pretty simple and minimal customization allows you to go from modern big bright colorful rounded touch-friendly windows with giant padding aka mac or gnome, to more traditional compact square dim windows aka windows 95.

The only thing that makes me jealous is the better rounded corners and the floating panels throughout the DE, as well as the use of CSD (Client-Side Decorations) or DWD (Dynamic Window Decorations). Without them, the DE looks a little bit outdated and gives the feeling that KDE Plasma has been left behind.
@ikeahloe
@ikeahloe Жыл бұрын
Kde zealots will continue to rage for server side decorations because they love wasting space with no good justification. It holds back the applications and developers. KDE will continue to look like they have no design team.
@Wurstbrot03
@Wurstbrot03 Жыл бұрын
@@ikeahloe While CSD can be nice, outside of power users on a small screen, most people really don't care about that. People make it a bigger deal than it really is.
@ikeahloe
@ikeahloe Жыл бұрын
@@Wurstbrot03 It will just look outdated to people that don't care, even if they don't know why. And for people that do understand they either cling onto familiarity for dear life at the expense of others, or they lose in a ux /design debate. The biggest issue is placing application design limitations in the main UI toolkit when displayed in plasma desktop. (Maui doesn't integrate the same way to the main plasma desktop). So application developers can't even help the situation.
@ikeahloe
@ikeahloe Жыл бұрын
@@ScarletDeath1312 To be absolutely clear, I'm not advocating for removing SSD, or especially as a fallback, or even as a choice for an application developer. I'm advocating for ADDING CSD custom headerbars in the standard KDE application development options. Subjectively speaking I would recommend it in most cases.

A lot of exciting work being done for tiling, definitly one of the areas that the Linux desktop was falling short. I cant wait to see how Cosmics implementation will contrast to Gnomes Mosaic once both are available.
@StiekemeHenk
@StiekemeHenk Жыл бұрын
Omg they need to do SVG wallpapers that make use of the 4 colors we've chosen before. Even better, make sure we can update the color scheme on the fly. Then you could allow programs to 1. update your colors based on the program or content 2. change your background and update your colors based off of that 3. have an animated background with adaptive colors 4. probably way more SVG's might be heavy so I imagine PNG masks might be another way of tackling this?

Swaywm is the most intuitive window manager according to me. The shortcuts are very easy to remember and intuitive. It is great that, cosmic is also keeping things intuitive instead of unnecessary complications like what kde did with that Super+T implementation.

@FlanPoirot
@FlanPoirot Жыл бұрын
default shortcuts don't really matter on tiling window managers, so that's not really a valid point for whether sway if good or not. It is very important for desktop environments to nail that tho. Cosmic uses standard/conventional shortcuts used by most tiling wm users, it's nothing special really. As for Sway, sway is a i3 rewrite for wayland, and I personally think i3 is underwhelming and kinda bad. Hyprland and River are better if we're talking only about wayland compositors, but to each their own
@arghyaS
@arghyaS Жыл бұрын
@@FlanPoirot yes, you can configure whatever shortcuts you want easily in a window manager. But what I am trying to say is, the default shortcuts that i3/sway has, are nice. I also configured my gnome setup to follow a similar workflow. A desktop environment does not need to do anything new btw if they want people to use tiling. All window managers have done great things towards that. They just need to choose a default set of shortcuts, and keep an easy interface to change them easily.

Hi Niki, I am a fan of yours, I am also a grandfather on pension. I do appreciate very, very much your presentations/work and style to produce each video. I much like how you have made your hair one colour, and your appearance is neat and professionally accurate and enjoyable to watch. Can you raise your camera so that we see less of your hand waving? Hands waving on the screen are a distraction from the contents you worked hard to present. Do not follow another American presenter who uses his hands as American flags. I gathered from your presentations that your mother tongue is not English, but your English is far better than mjny American KZbin presenters; I also know you are a university student, and my advice there is UNIVERSITY IS PRIORITY, KZbin can wait.

indeed i had not looked at cosmic os tiling implementation myself yet... but indeed this is actually very similar to the way that i had recently arrived at in my independent design document. which i came up with after seeing that gnome event presentation... what is the saying? great minds think alike? it is indeed something very similar. but truly it's not such a surprise to me: because there is really very few ways to do tiling properly. (which is always going to be pretty similar to the cosmic way). i commend them for actually implementing it however. my contribution is just some generic design document. (and not even got it done yet). anyhow the main takeaway is for other DEs - they need to implement underlying tiling mechanism in a way which is very similar to CosmicOS. Which requires a certain but vert necessary level of complexity underneath. And there isn't a way to cut it down beyond a certain point. It is necessarily a complex feature. That needs to be designed and implemented such a certain way. With some very necessary layer(s) of abstraction that sits in between the windows list, and the end user presentation.

It's funny, because I switched from Pop! to Fedora when they implemented that Gnome COSMIC extension thingy. I thought, if this is what they have to offer and what they call a new DE, I prefer Gnome 40 (was still skeptical on horizontal Workspaces back then) I'm now a happy Gnome user (that now likes horizontal Workspaces), but seeing these progress updates on cosmic makes me think that I should maybe give it another try when it's finished. Perhaps I judged too early... but then I also want to say, System76 could have just stayed with gnome and Pop Shell instead of doing this half-baked COSMIC extension...

Curious if Pop OS could bring me back to Linux. I used to use Linux only for 11 years. But the desktop on Linux is so broken and buggy, I couldn't stand it anymore and switched to macOS. - I just have a different view of quality and intuitive interfaces than most users. - And Windows is in my view pure garbage. I'm happy right now with macOS, but I always support freedom and OpenSource, so I keep an eye to Pop OS.
