15 years ago I spent 5 years, 3700 hours and had to be 6000 or more "instructional" rides, some simulated air combat flights and pilot check outs in the T6. I worked for 2 different companies traveling throughout the USA, I guess a modern version of barnstorming. I must have flown 10 or so different T6s, most were working planes, few show planes......The best one was this worn but not warn out yellow bird. She was light, everything was well broken in so it all made for the most beautiful machine, like a comfortable pair of old jeans. The worst one was a freshly restored "private" plane I did check out in, boy it was a pig. No matter how tired or burned out towards the end of the season i was (12 plus flights a day a times) the next morning bringing the 1340 back to life was a joy. I also helped with most of the maintenance, from engine changes to valve lash adjustments. The T6 in my opinion one of the greatest airplanes ever (my count is up to 150, including hour in the T28 and P51) in terms of pure joy of flight, ease of maintenance due to the relative simplicity and reliability of the bird. The airplane can be also flown at relatively low fuel flow, by the time I made friends with the bird I could get fuel burn down to about 22-24 gallons per hour and this is mostly doing 30 minutes rides including aero, I did sometimes use thermals (back to my glider days) to get to altitude. It is easy however to be hard on the bird and burn 35 gallons per hour. Another interesting bit is the fact that during rides I flew in the back seat, at first it was a shock, I could not see anything in front of me. As soon as I got use to it I loved the back seat, the biggest advantage was during landings. Sitting back behind the cg and main gear I could sense much better any yaw, during ferry flights in the front seat the airplane did not give the same feedback. At some point I came up with this description of the T6: The T6 flys the same as a 50s Buick if they ever designed a sports car. Perfect control harmony, great solid feel, big specious cockpit, mechanical controls, clean beautiful classic lines and the retention of energy. Once you get some altitude, put the nose down to get 180-190 mph the sky and your skill are the only limits..........Boy I miss it now, even cleaning the puke after a flight was not so bad. Now the T28 is awesome machine, the power is addicting and once the gear is up, you don't know that there is the training wheel up front (little joke ok). Last was my hour in the P51, it was a dual seater in private hands. After talking to the instructor and telling him that I am flying the T6 for living (in my3rd year) I got an honest instructional flight with me in the front seat. I read up on it, did it of ground school and was allowed to do it all from start up to shut down with just verbal instructions. Again power, sound amazing so after bit of flying and some acro I did 3 landings. The P51 is so much easier to land then the T6, wide main gear, longer fuselage and higher wing loading makes it a puppy dog. My instructor said go find one, you are good to go......never found one. So like that say, the T6 is the pilot maker! Cool vid thx, the geared 1340 looks cool and performs better but T6 needs the prop crackle.

Love the T-28. I was a plane captain on T-28Bs in VT-3 at Whiting Field when I was in the Navy in the mid 60s. Every time I started the R1820 to do a run-up I closed my eyes for a second and imagined I was in a B-17 :)

I have always loved the AT-6 ever since I was just a little boy. My parents owned a North American Harvard Mk. II s/n 2905 c/n 66-2638 back in the late 1970's to early 80's. I truly miss flying in that bird.

Was fortunate to see Bob Hoover put on a show in Brisbane 1994 or 1995. A local T28 owner handed over his aircraft and Bob put it through an amazing routine,(as you would expect). Cheers from Downunder

Gonna be a little picky here. The beautiful T-28 shown here is (I think) a D-model (presumably with all ordnance delivery capability removed). But, more importantly, it has no tail hook for carrier landings. VT-5 at Saufley Field was the squadron that flew the T-28C models (with tail hook) and (even though the airplanes weren't officially assigned to the USS LEXINGTON) proudly displayed the carrier's name on the sides of their T-28C aircraft in which the student pilots did their carrier quals. (As you were. Carry on. Enjoy the video.)

I flew the AT-28 version in Vietnam as part of the 20th SOS USAF along with UH-1 Gunships and AH-1F Cobra in Ground Attack and cover missions. It was a great aircraft but not as good in this roll as the A1 Skyraider as used by the Marines.

The T-6 became the CAC Wirraway fighter bomber used by the Royal Australian Airforce in WW2. Australia were in a desperate situation. it is said that they made one kill in combat.

Not to be picky, Vt-5 flew the T-28C (tail hook And squared off prop blades, VT-2 & 3 used a combination of B's (no tail Hook and rounded prop blades) and C's.

The T-28 must be a really tough customer. In 1967 I was stationed at Keesler AFB for tech school. At that time the Air Force was training VNAF pilots in the T-28. I saw the VNAF students do some terrible things to the airplane and it just kept flying.

The Navy Bravo had a tail hook too. They had just cut out carrier operations when I was going through. Did my carrier landings in a UH1 flying parts out to the Lexington after maintenance check flights. Starboard Delta upon arrival check in with prifly.

@@Warbirds Having owned and flown my T-28B for over 5 years, I believe that is a B model. "A" model has no speed-brake. All others had the larger engine. C model has smaller diameter prop , tail hook and smaller high pressure tires. There are more differences, but that is my two cents worth of opinion.
