True story. For a time during the revolution the Austrian border was open and people fled to the west. A young boy, 12 years old was told he would take his 3 year old sister to the west and the parents would follow. His mother told him to be brave and strong and they, the parents, would follow the next day. The sister was drugged so she would be quiet. Sadly that night the Russians started to close the border. He had to avoid border patrols all night but finally made it, carrying his sister all the way, to Austria. Of course his parents never got out, and he never saw them again. Eventually he made it to America with his sister. He was my high school math teacher. A fine man and true American patriot.

Those weren't Russians but Soviets of whom many were Ukrainians as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was the closest part of the USSR, also the Hungarian Armed Forces were pretty much on Soviet side - something which is almost never mentioned, but yes, most of the Hungarian Army fought against the rebels together with the Soviets and a lot of those "rebels' were Szalasi followers.

MICHAEL WILD Szálasi followers?! Most of those that survived were employed by ÁVH, the Communists had excellent use for unscrupulous henchmen. I’ll try to correct some of your BS even though from your tone you’re a Commie apologist, but whatever, perhaps people with open mind will read. Except for a few units Hungarian army didn’t fight the revolutionaries, definitely not in Budapest, not after the tanks went over to them in front of the party building on the 30th. They were mostly confined to their barracks, because the troops were in uproar, and even the officers were divided. Some units did fight the Russians (that’s what we called them, that’s what most of them were, so save the etnographic lecture) “Juta-domb” Later, after the second invasion on Nov 4th, after the communists solidified their control they did use army units to fire on crowds. All officers had been made to sign an oath of loyalty to the communist regime, those who wouldn’t, or had exposed themselves during the revolution were removed. Demonstrations went on till early 1957, mostly in the countryside. There, the army did fire into the crowds, even had a fighter plane cannon them, hundreds were killed. That was the new Hungarian army, officers purged, troops intimidated. And that the revolutionaries were Nazis.. That was the Communist propaganda at the time, but nobody believed it, even then. F you.

It is sad though that they had the balls to send an officer on the murderous streets of Budapest during the uprising as long as they needed the intelligence materials, but as soon as the precious details of the soviet's tank designs were captured they didnt give a damn and let the revolution get suppressed by the soviets. I am not talking about Britain exclusively but the entire west who later profited from the captured infos for which technically Hungarian revolutionaries were the ones who paid with their blood.

Wow, this was super amazing! I never thought I'll learn something new about our 1956 uprising. Prof. Felton never ceases to amaze us. Here are some additions. The T-55 "captured" by the British Embassy was found at Móricz Zsigmond körtér (try to pronounce that!), a site of heavy street combat for many days. I'm pretty sure Lt. Col. Crowley met and talked to a certain, rather colourful person who was a central figure in the resistance group holding that area, a former WW2 SS Panzergrenadier going by the nickname "SS Robi". He was a criminal, and served many years in prison both before and after the uprising. But he was the only one in the area who knew how to drive a tank. I remember a recollection mentioning that he started up and drove away a busted Soviet tank from Móricz Zsigmond körtér. That might very well have been the T-55 in the story, and "SS Robi" was incorrectly assumed by Crowley to be the leader of the insurgents. One small correction. The massacre at the Parliament on October 25, 1956 was not the Soviets' doing. It was perpetrated by members of the "Partisan Alliance", an organization of retired WW2 Communist guerillas who opened fire at the crowd from the rooftops. Although there are no official records to prove this, a Hungarian amateur historian, Edit Kéri has conducted research into the subject, mainly looking into court documents, and established that several of the shooters were heard as witnesses in later show trials of captured insurgents, and they openly talked about their own crimes to the judges. Naturally it was seen as a heroic act to stop a fascist counter-revolution. Also, Imre Nagy, the new PM was not "Soviet-appointed" at all. Actually nobody knows how he became PM, he just came out and sat in the chair. He was a hardline Communist. Later he was hanged by his own comrades. Leftists attempted to build a cult of him after 1990, and depicted him as a "martyr". Even a statue was erected to him near the Parliament. It was recently removed, but it's still standing at another place.

Fun Fact! During the 1956 revolution Hungarian freedom fighters would place overturned frying pans onto streets with alleyways leading to courtyards in order to mimic anti-tank mines. Soviet tankers would steer away from the "mines" and drive into the courtyards where Molotov cocktails would be thrown onto the tanks from the apartments above.

It's always a pleasure to hear your new episode. Little correction: Soviet troops did not remain in Yugoslavia at the end of the WW2. They pushed on into Hungary in late 1944 and 1945. Tito fell out with Stalin in 1948 which prompted a) Yugoslavia secretly collaborating with US and NATO and b) a blockade of Yugoslav borders by Warsaw Pact until 1953. Imre Nagy took refuge at the Yugoslav embassy in Budapest at the end of the quelled Hungarian uprising, but was likely handed over to the Soviets by the Yugoslavs due to the mounting pressure.

8 of those tanks went to the Rhodesian Armoured Corps, becoming "E" Squadron, however they remained untested in combat. These were modified with the Eland Mk. 7 communications system, had anti-infrared paint and had the radios relocated to the commander's position. And the crewmen had AKMS as sidearms. Plus, a story was made up that the tanks were captured in Mozambique or the "Russian Front" as I recall. @@SolidTaylor The reason the Hungarians cooperated with the Germans in WWII was due to the fact that prior to WWII, Moscow had sent communist terrorists to Hungary. These terrorists caused murder and mayhem in Hungary in a effort to start a revolution, which would cause Russian intervention and ultimate incorporation into the Soviet Union. When the opportunity arose, Hungarians joined Germans to chase out the terrorists, and go to the root of the problem by invading Russia. Unfortunately, this plan failed due to the stupidity of the Allies, and Hungary was thrown to the wolves by the Allies.

Fake mines made from ceramic plates turned upside down! Pretty stirring stuff reading about the desperate and creative defense on the part of the people of Hungary. A renowned American author named James Michener (who was studying in Austria at the time of this uprising) interviewed a number of Hungarians as they crossed the border through Andau. He wrote a book about it all that I would recommend called, "The Bridge at Andau."

I was a Centurion driver gunner on the MK13 with the L7 105mm gun, 1969 ish. It was very accurate and fast to load with stabiliser action when on the move. I was much more at home on this tank than the Chieftain I was on, 1971 ish as a B1 Gunner. The Centurion was a petrol/gas engine and the back decks used to get nice and toasty after a good run, and that's where all the crew would sleep in the winter months with the gun elevated and a canvas slung over for cover. This, of course, was a none action period for British Tanks.

ÁVH did start shootings near the local prison, some 18 year old young protesters died in the shootings. Then the mass overthrew the police, theyre took theyre weapons, and entered the prison, hang some of the ÁVH members. After this, the prison were looted, lots of papers / documents were on the street. He told me, that he just found a random picture on the street - it was a photograph about a torture of some woman - she was bound and her breast was pierce trough with some nail. Most of Serbia (the largest of the future republics of Yugoslavia that contained the capital, Belgrade, as well as being the part from which the royal family hailed from and had the greatest support including its own guerilla movement, the Chetniks) was liberated in 1944. by the Soviets with the, as of recently allied Bulgarian army as well as Yugoslav Partisans (which formed the Yugoslav People's Army) in tow. Chetniks rose up and liberated quite a few towns the Germans retreated from (with colliborationist Serbian police with which they had secret relationships switching sides, surrendering or retreating), hoping to establish themselves as players and to maintain the capitalist monarchy, but the Red Army (Churchill and Stalin having already agreed on the postwar spheres of influence) disarmed them. Yugoslav Communist Party was a part of the Komintern and the uprising in 1941. started only after the German attack on the Soviet Union (both to USSR's advantage - in that it tied up some German troops in Yugoslavia, and the Yugoslav - uprising would have been quickly crushed had it been started before the bulk of the German units that invaded Yugoslavia left to take part in the invasion of the USSR. But in a German-occupied Yugoslavia the USSR indeed could no longer control Tito by force, so he became a willing junior ally rather than a pawn. In 1944. after repeated failed German attempts to crush the nucleus of his partisan army and capture him he was evacuated to the British held island of Vis (guarded by allied navies and air forces) and there he probably received information that Yugoslavia is intended to be a buffer state with 50-50% influence of West and the USSR so, after some early hardline communist moves like helping the Greek communists in the Greek Civil War (Stalin agreed with Churchill in Moscow in 1943. to leave Greece to the West) and attempting to claim Trieste, moves which even the USSR did not welcome as the USA at the time had nuclear monopoly - turned its back on him and expelled him from the Comimform. Tito, needing financial backing for the reconstruction of his new underdeveloped and war ravaged country turned to the West for support. And claimed credit for all of it, whereas he was mostly just lucky his country found itself between the two power blocks that both wanted to avoid another war and agreed to have buffer countries in between.
