Development of T-54 started in world war 2. It is still in battle today. Find other world war 2 weaponry in battle today compared with today tanks how 'bad' it is. Funny? :D It was unbelievable monster battle machine in its days.

of course, but, like I already said in my first comment, it was a deliberate decision in order to be as small as possible - thus being more difficult to hit and maximize available armor without increasing the weight - thus requiring less powerful and less expensive engine, etc etc. Design business is always finding the best compromise between confronting requirement. They wanted a tank both better armored and better armed than Panther and still weighing 12 tons less. Something's gotta give.

of course, but the tank was designed, for the most part, back in the '44-45; now I wouldn't call that a short period of time, especially back then. Remember, 2 years of tank development back in the 1941-1943 for example, are easily translated into 2 decades of tank development nowadays. Plus, they always had the option of uparmoring the basic T-55 design, thus decreasing it's mobility (like the British did with their slow Centurions). but they opted for unhindered mobility.

Almost immediately after "T44" in Nijni Tagilsk's design department was disined new mid tank "T54" in aipril 1946 it had adopted. But as it turned out, its far from mass production: whole 4 years. This mid tank had became larger and more heavy weight. It started to get out of the limits thet was constructors aim /main target goal. On 1-st prototipes of T54 total wiagh was over limit as mutch, that passability dicrised significant. Problem was served eqipment o more wide tank tracks, and thickness of the frontal hull plates was dicrised. Shape\disine of tower was overwiewed aswell. on 1-st prototypes low side of tower had an angle that ricochet shell\progectile on the body of tank. then shape of tower bekame as a bolune. mass 37 tone crew 4 pilots main cannon 100MM engen 520 H.P disel max speed 50 K\h 2:30 i stoped 2 translete coz post became 2 big.
