He wasn't being discriminatory in any way. He was just trying to figure out if the whole lesbian thing is a gimmick. And it was a gimmick. There manager thought of the name which meant "this girl loves that girl" before he even chose the two girls for the band. He just knew that having two girls dress up as school girls and make them kiss would make him money. The interview just wanted to know the truth. He's not an ass hole.

i think he is because he has no right in asking them that. they answer what they are comfortable with, just because they are kissing on MTV doesn't mean he gets to know if they are together or not. and it wasn't a gimmick because the girls said maaaany times that they are NOT lesbians. they had their school uniforms because they were school girls at the time, they were kissing each other because they liked to do it at the time. and the fact that according to the interviews they were either lesbians and dating or straight and faking. bisexuality wasn't an option apparently?

@@nora912 True. Both girls are in fact bisexual and this is also confirmed by them as solo artists in adulthood. Back then,they were only minors and it was illegal to be gay in Russia. Also their parents attended all contract meetings with their producer and managers. Russia was also deeply homophobic. Both girls had to repeatedly deny they were in a relationship and Lena was also made to attend regular confessional meetings with her priest. Yulia already had a girlfriend before t.A.T.u. Lena was a closeted bisexual struggling with her own internalised homophobia. If both girls admitted at the time to being in a real relationship of bisexual at the time, their parents would have cancelled their contracts. But yes, I do believe that it gave them permission and validation to explore their sexuality (with each other), so I do believe that at some point they were a couple. They used to sleep in the same bed while on tour. It was only after Yulia started dated men and became pregnant when all that changed, and from that moment onwards Yulia and Lena never slept in the same bed again, but rather slept in separate rooms. Kissing on stage became handholding and hugs on stage. t.A.T.u soon deteriorated further after that and Lena wanted out.

it wasn't though, after people asking them 1000 times if they are lesbians or not you get pretty tired of that question. they never said they were lesbians, in fact they said they wasn't. and, they don't have to answer that question if they don't want to, they are 17 and 18 years old and needs to have a private life. just because they are kissing doesn't mean he can know about their private life. they do what they are comfortable with and answer what they are comfortable with. it's none of his business to know if they are together or not.
