Hi Roger, very helpful video. Can I ask, what is the EM700 like for handling noise? My use is different to yours- I would be interviewing handheld in a variety of indoor environments (for audio documentary work). Thanks.
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland 5 ай бұрын
It would have to be mounted in some shock mount, otherwise I don't think it would work too well. And I'm not sure if you want to have handheld interviews with a shock mount. Could work though.

@@RogerinFinland That's great, thanks Roger. Some producers I like do use shockmounts with mics like this for handheld work, but I'm probably better off looking at something designed for stage work. Appreciate your reply, best.

Hi Roger, it was a very useful review. Thanks. I am neither a creator on youtube nor a sound engineer. I am just an automotive engineer trying to provide a clear listening experience to my colleagues on the other side of teams calls. At the moment , the laptop mic and my reverby/echoey home office is not the best. After reading and combing through various types of mics, I feel small diaphragm condensor mics are the best possible way to go forward. I would like to combine EM700 with a USB to XLR interface cable (t.bone USB 1x) to be used for my teams calls. . Do you know if such an interface works?
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland Жыл бұрын
I haven't used that particular interface but it should work I suppose. That's assuming that it would provide phantom power to the EM700. You still have the potential issue of echo if you listen through the laptop speakers. Speaking from experience (I work on the software business and online meetings are my day to day) I'd recommend a USB headset for that purpose. I think the route of small condenser is a bit of an overkill for the use case
@carthick1000

@@RogerinFinland Thanks for your quick reply. I find the wrap around headphones/headsets very uncomfortable after an hour, no matter the size. I find my earbuds do a good job for listening. Also that is reason I would like to have this setup instead of a headset. This also gives me room to move around without carrying a headset all the time. And for under 70eur (If it works EM700 + USB-XLR + a cheap boom arm) is worth it for convenience to work.
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland Жыл бұрын
Fair enough. It's all about personal preferences in the end. I've been considering the Deity vo-7u for that particular purpose, but it's a more costly option. On the EM700 just make sure you have a way to provide phantom power to it 👍🏼

I guess the problem with the EM800 is that it is a cardioid and the EM 700 is a Supercardioid so the EM800 picks up more of the room sound especially the reverb from the walls. I was surprised when i compared the EM800 to the Sennheiser E614 (supercardioid). Thought the EM800 to be a Supercardioid too. But the Sennheiser beats the EM800 by far. TBH i think the EM700 sounds much better than the EM800.
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland Жыл бұрын
Good analysis. And I agree that the difference in polar pattern makes a difference in picking up to noise, but I think the difference is on noise floor and interference rather than additional room noise. Both are bang for the buck, but nowadays I definitely lean towards the EM700. I'd be curious to try that Sennheiser!

@@RogerinFinland Sure :) I am just wondering how a pencil condenser holds up against a shotgun indoors. There is much rave about how pencil mics sound better in not perfectly treated rooms, but to me, at least in the space where I usually shoot, I can not hear too much problem with the few shotguns I have. :)

Very nice video. I personally don't see any reason why I would use a shotgun or a boom mike...with so much effort involved. I would rather use my Boya BY-M1 with my Zoom H1N. I have (almost) no complaints. I have a question. Although I love my Zoom H1N but I (like all other hobbyists) suffer from GAS and you have also been sharing some information about other Zoom recorders...I would like to know a little bit about them. Who is F1 and F2, F3 etc and H5 etc for? Should I consider them?
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland Жыл бұрын
About the effort, I just have that microphone arm mounted there, and the F3 is the least effort recorder I've ever used 😊. Of course that's a matter of taste, but that's mine. About the other recorders, I literally published a video two weeks ago comparing the F1, F2 and F3 😁, check it out and ask further if you have more questions. The H5 is a different beast. Think of it as a big upgrade to the H1n (4channels, phantom power, interchangeable capsules).👍🏼

@@RogerinFinland and BTW...I recently bought a Boya XM-6 S1 mic kit. I like it very much. I just tested it and I loved it. I will try to make it to good use too. I am getting more and more interested in the wireless options. IMO...Pico mic is the best in the market but it 450-500 USD. That not what a hobbyist/enthusiast is supposed to spend on a mic, irrespective of how good it might be. You may disagree.
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland Жыл бұрын
I've had wireless options but I end up not using it them. Again, personal preference. And I have no saying on how people spend their money 👍🏼, if someone wants to spend that money on a microphone, and their finances allow, why not? It's not a matter of need, but want and that's ok with me.

In practice it means that the SNR (Signal to noise Ratio) is better in the EM700, which is something you want. And listening carefully, many times, with a good set of headphones, not only the EM800 is louder but it does catch interference much easier and much more, and (to me) it does sound harsher. Still, the EM800 is great for the price as well.

For 24dB gain they both sound very noisy. That's not a lot of gain.
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland Жыл бұрын
If there would be any normal level sound recorded (voice for example) it would be absolutely and totally clipped, so I'd say yes adding 24dB in post is actually quite a lot.
@danmcbmusic
@danmcbmusic Жыл бұрын
@Roger in Finland ok you added 24 after- what was the preamp gain when you made the recording.
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland Жыл бұрын
@@danmcbmusic this was recorded with the Zoom F3 and 32bit float, so no gain at all is use while recording. The 24dB is "24dB above the gain needed to get the voice at normal level in that situation with the microphone at 30cm from the source".
@danmcbmusic
@danmcbmusic Жыл бұрын
@Roger in Finland if there was no gain the signal would not even be audible. A condenser mic out is about 1 or 2mV. There is gain.
@danmcbmusic
@danmcbmusic Жыл бұрын
@Roger in Finland to clarify, the F3 has two preamps, hi and low gain and it automatically selects between them to expand dynamic range (which is great until you use a very sensitive mic on a loud source and clip, which is possible). So there is gain, you just don't know what it is because it is hidden from you. If you would record a signal of the right level, you might hear that hiss suddenly change in level as the zoom switches between preamps. To get a decent idea of how noisy these mics are (most cheap condensers do suffer from this) you really need to test at a known fixed gain.
