I feel just terrible for you guys, especially coming right after you were on such a high after an amazing passage. Much respect to you for being so calm and philosophical after a traumatic incident like this. Unfortunately, it seems to be exceedingly common for irresponsible/careless skippers to be ‘in command’ of boats in popular anchorages; I’m by no means a seasoned cruiser, but nevertheless have seen multiple boats dragging at anchor (in relatively calm conditions), anchoring too close to other boats, motoring around mooring fields too quickly, etc. My own boat was damaged in a ‘hit-and-run’ in a mooring field, and another KZbinr I know, Vernon from “Sailing Learning By Doing” was also was struck recently by another careless skipper in a large catamaran. At this point, I’m honestly more worried about being hit by other boats at anchor than I am about accidents at sea. I wish there was a solution… In the meantime, I wish you the best of luck in getting back in the water quickly, and thank you for sharing this. Love your channel, and am looking forward to seeing you back sailing soon! ❤❤❤

You guys showed such calmness and grace today. Can’t imagine how it would feel to make it through the straits of Gibraltar without an orca “interaction”, all the way across the Atlantic unscathed, and then have this happen. Here’s to a solid repair (stronger than before!) and a return to your adventure.

This is so sad. Thank you fir keeping us up to date so quickly. Beautiful AWEN!!!! So glad to hear that once again, Outremer pulled through like champs. What a great company. That skipper was good and apologetic, probably because no one yelled at him and told him what a moron he is. Accidents do happen, and boat stories are made. It's very sad if you miss the Miami show. Ugh, that's just heartbreaking :(( I try and look for the silver lining in bad situations, but I'm also a right-fighter and I might go after that skipper to make sure he's not allowed to be in charge of anything larger than a dinghy. Maybe a kayak. His behavior in a cat that size is unforgiveable. Outremer was a champ in this, as well-so impressed with them as a company that supports their owners. I almost started crying at 8:45 when you got emotional-we put so much of ourselves into our catamarans. 😔

oh boy, so sorry to hear that. In a way you are lucky as you say that it happened there, and you could get hauled out etc. But what a disappointment. They say a first scratch protects from worse, but let's hope the damage is not a huge endeavor to restore. As for Outremer and the show, they have another boat on the way, but having you there would have made a difference. These things happen and yes in remote places this could have had a totally different ending. We are all to often at places where a haul out ain't possible, and if you could there's no expertise. As for the other captain, the fact that you are sorry for him tells a lot. He did not steer? nr switch of the engines? Accidents are often not easy to understand and that's the risk we all take, Let's hope it's not as bad as it feels right now. fingers crossed.

Really love this Catamaran! -- QUESTION -- We are planning a circumnavigation and assumed we would get a heavy sailboat like an HR 48 or 53 or Oyster 485. But we are slowely leaning toward these Catamarans. One issue, we noticed that the Outremer 55 named Great Cat Circles and now your Cat have both had damage when making contact with, well, almost anything tbh... Not sure if this is a big deal to consider or not. Do you worry much about breaking/damaging your rudder or hull or is this something that isn't a big deal? Seems like we could expect that there will be several bumps and bangs during a circumnavigation and hence a good deal or structural damage on a Catamaran.
@SailingAWEN Жыл бұрын
I don’t think damage has anything to do with the boat as much as just dumb luck. When a 20+ T boat runs into you it’s going to create some damages no matter what. In this case we had no water ingress and no structural issues so I’m not sure you need to sail around the world in a tank ;-) There are other criteria that are important for safety, in our opinion, like performance. There are pros and cons to fiber, composite, carbon and aluminum. Everything is a tradeoff. 🤣 Having said that we would recommend you test sail the boats you are interested in. HR and Outremer are very different breeds. Outremer’s DNA (over 40 years now) has been about blue water sailing and to do many circumnavigations over their lifetime. Only this winter, 30+ Outremer crossed the Atlantic (some of those boats are already on their way to Panama to cross the Pacific Ocean), some are finishing this year the GLYWO (3 year circumnavigation)… the Outremer community tends to be full of ocean voyagers. Best of luck with your boat search…
@Coleen_West Жыл бұрын
@@SailingAWEN ..well said. Here is a weird self-observation - for some reason I find myself wanting to not like Catamarans as we spent several years "dreaming" of an HR sailboat and along comes these Catamarans that just seem so much better. It seems clear that your 52 Outemer is better in every way to a sailboat, except for taking a hard hit. I would have thought that carbon fiber would be unbreakable if hit.
@SailingAWEN Жыл бұрын
@@Coleen_West Hi Coleen, nothing is unbreakable ;-) Our boat is fiberglass with some bulkheads in carbon. Fiberglass will resist better to impact than Carbon as it is more flexible, although Carbon is much stronger. Increased rigidity does not necessarily that carbon makes a better choice for all applications. It is a boat, everything is about trade-offs ;-) You might be interested in the following video "Right Dream, Wrong Boat": kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKGzc2yubZaqoMUsi=zaCp8_6TR7kzS5zo

All I can offer is some strategic thinking that might reveal different options available to you over the next 6 months. My concern that a thump of that severity may have caused grp flexing over a wider area than initially apparent. It can take months for stress crazing in gel coat to fully reveal itself. I would initially be looking for vertical crazing adjacent to the first bulkhead fore and aft of the point of impact. How about buying some think-time by getting a rough GRP patch on the full thickness crack after grinding out any obvious adjacent gel crazing. Get the boat seaworthy and sail up to Florida and exhibit your still beautiful AWEN. Outremer could apply a sticky advert panel over the external quick-fix section. After the show decompress, do some gentle sailing in the Bahamas and arrange the full repair later summer when you will more confident the scope of the damage has been revealed. Were the dagger boards up at the time of the impact? I hope that much of the energy of the impact dissipated in a sidewards slip over the water unlike deep keel monohull yachts that thump each other like heavyweight boxers. Your confidence in AWEN will return over the net 18 months as you retest the heavy weather envelope. It will all be a distant nearly forgotten memory in a year or two when you are swinging at anchor in a far away Polynesian atoll.

This apparently wasn’t a charter, there were 2 skippers on board apparently

So sorry guys. Times like this are real hard. Life is about living in the solution not the problem. Keep you heads up and enjoy the journey. Again, so sorry.

Wow…heartbreaking. Such a wonderful boat to have damaged by the carelessness of others.

So sorry for you!😢 The skipper/owner of Bali seems to have 'frozen' (cf. apparently he didn't steer to mitigate the dammage). I would be curious to know how much experience he has on boats in general and on that one in particular. I suspect that Stéphane may have something to do with the whole thing: to insure his supply of croissants for the next few weeks. 😜

Would if figured that captain could of put his engines in reverse to avoid hitting you. So sad to what happened.. Hopefully repairs don't take too long but of course insurance companies never in a hurry either

Hey guys so sorry to hear this. You may not wish to hear this but I really believe things happen for a reason. Hopefully you will be able to determine what that reason is. I’m so sorry to hear of this delY

Désolé pour vous et courage pour la suite, mais je suis sur qu’Awen sera réparé comme neuf et que vous allez vite repartir pour continuer votre route vers Miami.
