Bishop T.D. Jakes interviews Co-CEO & President of Ariel Investments; Vice-Chair of Starbucks; Director at JPMorgan Chase, Mellody Hobson.
As Co-CEO of Ariel Investments, Mellody is responsible for management, strategic planning, and growth for all areas of Ariel Investments outside of research and portfolio management. Additionally, she serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ariel Investment Trust-the company’s publicly traded mutual funds. Prior to being named Co-CEO, Mellody spent nearly two decades as the firm’s President. Outside of Ariel, Mellody is a nationally recognized voice on financial literacy. She has conducted extensive research on minority investing patterns and pens a column for Black Enterprise Magazine. Her leadership has also been invaluable to corporate boardrooms across the nation. She currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of Starbucks Corporation; a director of JPMorgan Chase; and a director of Quibi, a short-form video content company. She previously served as Chairman of the Board of DreamWorks Animation until the company’s sale and was also a long-standing board member of the Estée Lauder Companies. Mellody’s community outreach includes her role as Chairman of After School Matters, a Chicago non-profit that provides area teens with high-quality after school and summer programs. Additionally, she is vice-chair of World Business Chicago; co-chair of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art; and a board member of the George Lucas Education Foundation. She also serves on the board at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Mellody is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, The Rockefeller Foundation Board of Trustees, and serves on the executive committee of the Investment Company Institute. Mellody earned her AB from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of International Relations and Public Policy. In 2019, she was awarded the University’s highest honor, the Woodrow Wilson Award, presented annually to a Princeton graduate whose career embodies a commitment to national service. She has also received honorary doctorate degrees from Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, St. Mary’s College, and the University of Southern California. In 2015, Time Magazine named her one of the “100 Most Influential People” in the world.

Bishop, this is the first time I have ever heard anybody say what Mellody Hobson articulated about knowing as a child that she was meant to impact the world. I have known this about myself my entire life and I know that I will have to write a book about it. This mindset has fueled my ability to make it through many difficult situations throughout my life. My life is evidence that God is a Good God in every bad situation. As a child, I could hear the Voice of the Lord, but I didn’t know Who He was. I remember calling Him “Thinker” because He was so smart! I would ask for His guidance and I could hear His Voice leading and guiding me through dark times in my childhood. We lived in a very volatile environment. My father was an alcoholic and was verbally and physically abusive to my mother (as all the men on both sides of my family were). At 6 years old, my younger sister and brother and I were victims of abuse and molestation by relatives. I also became a chronic stutterer, couldn't even say my own name, and was subjected to intense ridicule daily at school until the 11th grade. I had no memory my entire childhood for most of my life. Mama left Daddy when I was 12 and we finally had peace at home. It was then that “Thinker” said to me, “I have to leave you now. But when you ask Me to, I’ll come back.” I said, “But I don’t want you to go!! How will I make decisions?! How will I know what to do?!” He quietly said again, “When you ask Me to, I’ll come back.” Then I stopped hearing His Voice. When I was 17, a friend told me that I could I receive Jesus Christ as my Savior. On February 5, 1975, I went to church with her and received the Lord and THINKER WAS BACK!! It was HIM all along Who was with me through those hard times! I was baptized in the Holy Spirit the next day. He absolutely revolutionized my life!! But my Heavenly Daddy has delivered me from MANY more worst-case scenarios throughout my life... I got married at 17 - it was a verbally and emotionally abusive marriage with him also committing adultery. We even pastored a church for about 20 years. After 25 years, I left the marriage because it became physically abusive. But for 20 of those years, I spoke Ephesians 5:21-33 and 1st Peter 3:1-12 over my marriage daily. I didn’t receive the manifestation in that marriage, but I have received it overabundantly in my present marriage to Calvin Fleming - he is God’s manifestation of how much He loves me! I’ve had many physical challenges: 2 C-sections; 3 exploratory laps; 1 hysterectomy at 22; diagnosed with degenerative disk disease at 30, resulting in 2 back surgeries and 1 neck surgery & fusion; a constant migraine (incapacitating at times) from 1997 to 2010; thyroid disease (Grave’s Disease); and Ménière’s Disease. My biggest physical challenge to date was Acute Myeloid Leukemia - today, there’s a three-year survival rate of 27.4%, but I’ve been an overcomer since Christmas 2003. Today, I’m in better shape at 62 than I was in my 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s! I know that God has a purpose for my life and that I HAD to get through these trials to be able to help others. That sense of my purpose helped me focus beyond them. When I share my experiences and God’s faithfulness through them, people are encouraged and they believe that God will bring them through, too. I know I’m to impact the world in some way in the future, but I will continue to share God’s faithfulness to impact the world around me. He will determine where it goes from here…
