The formidable Swedish CV90120 light tank has recently received an astonishing upgrade that almost seems to push the armored vehicle into the realms of science fiction.
Already possessing some of the most impressive mobility-to-firepower ratios in the armored combat vehicle industry, the CV90120 is now undergoing the addition of the Ghost ADAPTIV infrared camouflage system, which is sure to make the light tank a remarkable asset in the arsenal of future warfare.
Because the most effective anti-tank guidance systems like the one used by the US Javelin rely on infrared detection, having an armored vehicle that can effectively mask its infrared trace and even disguise it to fade into the environment is a significant achievement.
If the project continues as planned, the CV90120T will be able to deliver devastating firepower while remaining technically invisible to the enemy… A proper ghost tank!

Incase anyone wants to know how this witchcraft is possible, it's thermoelectric cooling, aka the Peltier effect. Its super simple. If you have a semiconductor and you apply an electrical differential (voltage) it will create a temperature differential. One side gets cold, and the other side heats up: you're using electricity to pump heat from one side to the other. The heat doesn't just disappear (thermodynamics is a bitch like that) but you can pick up the heat from the hot-side and dump it into the environment. I would guess they use the ground. However many watts of heat is generated by the engine or crew or whatever that's how much you have to sink. Also, the electricity you use to do the pumping ends up as heat so you have to sink that too. Just some ball park estimates, a human puts out 100 watts of heat at rest and you can move several watts of heat per watt of electricity.

Other than being a great IR chameleon, I like the idea of it "broadcasting" an IR type of IFF signal to friendly forces. If one of these tanks are spotted on the battlefield, an unsure soldier could look at an IR sensor and see if it is portraying the "IR code of the day". You'd think that if these tanks are displaying an IR code, enemy forces could figure out to mimic it and display their own. But, if the enemy hasn't cracked radio communications, the tank could easily switch its IR IFF code at the push of a button. That makes me wonder if these codes couldn't be actively remotely changed by a central command unit and IR scanners would automatically "red flag" any vehicle with the same IR IFF code. In other words, HQ could send out a signal to all CV90120 tanks to display "123" (when not in active defensive camouflage) and all units would automatically display this code (when not in active defensive camouflage) and IR receivers would automatically sound an alarm when an unknown tank displaying this IR code is sighted.
@allangibson2408

The IFF code could be modulated into active camouflage - you just need to allow for the slow frequency response of the IR panels.
@John_Redcorn_
@John_Redcorn_ 2 жыл бұрын
You dont really want to be pulsating out IR signatures more so than you already are. The enemy might not know the codes, but theyll be able to pick them up nonetheless and be able to track it. I think the real value of this is not so much to remain ‘invisible’ but to make it harder for IR-based weapons to target you. But as we sit here i bet US defense companies already have or are working on weapon systems that acquire targets via EM signatures. Everything electronic, or anything metallic for that matter, gives off EM waves. There’d be no hiding from that.

You'd want to give the suspect tank in your cross-hair a minute to update, but yeah. Relatively passive way to put "IFF tags" on ground vehicles. You could also have a method of marking concealed vehicles in a less obvious way, just a smaller thermal marking, doesn't have to cover the entire vehicle. Something that wouldn't immediately scream 'shoot me' to the enemy.

I also really like the idea on pupose built medium tanks based on the hull of an armies used IFV, to serve in a dedicated anti tank role within a brigade or even a bataillon in dedicated heavy companies. While usually mechanized infantry is supposed to go alongside main battletank units, we all know some countries do not have such units in all of their mechanized brigades. Germany for example, has a at least on Mechanized Infantry Brigade that lacks a dedicated MBT/Anti-Tank unit, leaving the Grenadier Bataillons to sort of take care of them selves in that regard. I personally would solve that by adding Heavy Companies to such bataillons, being made up ifv-based medium tanks to increase the anti tank capabilities of machanized infantry brigades

Really cool stuff! Also, it might be worth noting that this very same technology of reducing its thermal signature could be applied on light weight mobility devices such as an E-Bike. It could be mounted much like a windscreen. T his windscreen could offer some ballistics protection as well with new high tech light weight armored plating. The advantages of doing this is that an E-bike is small, light weight, can go almost anywhere, (either ridden or pushed/carried, even inside buildings) , and (thanks to a 500-1000 watt high torque w motors) can go up to 20 to 27 mph (on roads) and maybe half that speed on trails and can (with fat tires and such) go over snow and mud. Also they can also be lain flat to make them harder to spot and target. Also, cargo E-bikes can carry 300lbs or so of cargo such as heavy weapons such as 50cal MGs, automatic grenade launchers, 81mm mortars plus ammo, and man portable ATGMs and such. E trikes can also use this to have even a lower profile. These could augment light unmanned ground vehicles (such as the one you recently covered) and traditional manned vehicles as well by giving leg infantry more mobility, cargo carrying capacity plus protection as well. With extra batteries they can have ranges of up top a hundred miles and batteries can be easily recharged, even by solar panels. One can also employ heavier electric motorcycles that can are more powerful and can go much faster (say 50 -60 mph vs 10 - 20) but they also weigh more as well and thus may not be quite as flexible as their lighter e-bike cousins but one might employ a mix of the two to have the best of both worlds. Links: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4OohH1snZKAfM0 kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZC3mZeabbOoj7M kzbin.info/www/bejne/hombiXePir93mNU kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2KpcqCobJ17l5o Bottom line. E bikes are quite versatile, light weight, and affordable as well, plus are small and hard to see and with this technology might be even harder to see.

I think you're correct, but I'd say that this camouflage will make a few different types of enemy weapons ineffective. I guess another way to say it is: "Would you rather have 2 guns pointed at you or one?"

yes it is still visible but in bad weather and night situations thermal is often the only way to positively id another vehicle. also most systems (armored vehicles and UAV's) use thermals as even in optical systems it can be very difficult to spot a camouflaged vehicle in terrain, but on thermal they often standout a lot more.

If you know the enemy have big ass guns and javelins than can penetrate all armor, it does make sense to downgrade to just enough armor to protect against "tier 2 guns" to gain more speed and ofc a lighter tank will have less of a problem using public roads and bridges and going offroad.

Modern APFSDS will shoot through most of armors. Invisibility and active protection with powerful gun, seems to make more sense. But when tank will shoot it can be detected so other tank can start shooting that way.
@texasranger24
@texasranger24 2 жыл бұрын
Any modern tank should have at least 4 Javelins or similar anti tank missiles mounted on top by default. You can fire your gun and some missiles and immediately disappear behind cover or your stealth. That's hardly a new tactic, just one that requires your sensors and crew to work better and faster than the enemies.

The CV90 is held in very high regard by most western militaries including USA who have a version for trials right now. And yes it's performed very well, huge IEDs that kill even tanks left the crews alive in a CV90 in Afghanistan. The firepower is also impressive. At least with the Swedish 40 mm, the NATO 20 mm Bushmaster is ok but not as lethal vs infantry or vehicles.

Very impressive camouflage like it said in this video mimicking what quite a few animals do in nature blending in to the background to make them almost invisible but there’s one flaw with invisibility like this in nature and that is movement as soon as the animal moves u can c it and so it would b with this tank I suspect a flaw that could b very costly for the crew not to mention the dollar implications for the country deploying them
