This video is inspiring nature and highlights the best performances of T Gopi, who is India's best marathon runner at present. T Gopi represented India at the Rio Olympics 2016 in the Marathon and finished in 25th position. He also represented India at the World Championship Marathon in London 2017 and World Championship in Doha in 2019. T Gopi was the winner of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2018 in a nail biting sprint finish along with Nitendra Singh Rawat. T Gopi is the only Indian Male Marathon Runner to have won the Asian Marathon Championship in Dongguan, China in 2017. He is now aiming to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics Marathon in July-August 2021.
T Gopi trains alongwith Kheta Ram and Nitendra Rawat, Marathon runners under coach Surendra Singh Bhandari in the high altitude regions of Ooty.
T Gopi was actually a 5k and 10k track runner. He was participating in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2016 as a pacesetter for his team mates Nitendra Rawat and Kheta Ram. He was supposed to drop out after 30K after finishing his job of providing pacing to his teammates. However, he felt better and continued running in the race and grabbed the 2nd position and qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the Marathon. He is the only Indian male runner to win the Asian Marathon Championship after winning the race at Dongguan, China in 2017.
The year 2016 was the beginning of the emergence of Indian Long Distance Runners on the global platform. It was the first time since the 1960 Rome Olympics, that three Indian Marathon Runners i.e Nitendra Singh Rawat, T Gopi and Kheta Ram qualified for the Rio Olympics in the Marathon. In a strong field of 155 runners at the Rio Olympics, T Gopi was the fastest Indian and finished 25th overall followed by Kheta Ram just behind in 26th position. Nitendra Rawat finished the in 84th position despite nursing an Injury. If we calculate the team positions like in Cross Country, India would have clinched the 8th spot, ahead of many countries like Japan, GB etc where running is very popular. This was a very decent and remarkable performance at the Olympics by these three teammates who had trained together for only a few years in the high altitude regions of Ooty under coach Surendra Singh Bhandari, a former track runner, Olympian and still the 10k National Record Holder. While the names of Kheta Ram and Nitendra Rawat have been popular, very few people know about T Gopi and his interesting story of how he qualified for the Rio Olympics. T Gopi was a 5K and 10k track runner and was running in the Mumbai Marathon 2016, not as a competitor, but as a pacesetter for his training partners Nitendra Rawat and Kheta Ram. He was supposed to drop out at 30kms after finishing his job of providing pacing to his team mates. But T Gopi kept on running as he felt better and eventually finished 2nd in the Indian Men’s race behind Nitendra Rawat and qualified for the Olympics. He focused on the Marathon thereafter. In 2017, he won the Asian Marathon Championship title in Dongguan, China and is the only Indian male runner to achieve this feat. He also represented India at the World Championships in 2017 and 2019 and finished 28th and 21st respectively. His personal best timing in the Marathon came at the Seoul International Marathon in 2019 where he clocked 2 hours 13 minutes and 39 seconds. This was the second fastest timing by an Indian in the Marathon and he was just 1 minute 39 seconds short of breaking the Legendary Shivnath Singh’s National record of 2 hours 11 minutes. T Gopi is now aiming to qualify for his second consecutive Olympic Marathon. Because of his consistent performance at the International level since the last 5 years, T Gopi is currently the best Indian Marathon Runner and his best performance is yet to come considering his age of 32. FitnessForever KZbin Channel wishes this great runner from the Indian Army All the very best for the upcoming races and the Indian Running Community is hoping to see him at the starting line of the Tokyo Olympic Marathon this year.
