after you 確實比較委婉,但 you go first 或 you can go first 其實也還行,沒到那麼嚴重。

Agreeing with that “you go first” is common and even friendly. “After you” is quite honorific! “Got it” & “no problem” work if you deal with a friendly boss. If you were to deal with your company’s president or equivalent, “understood”, “roger that”, “copy that”.

Totally fine here in the States too. She likes to make stuffs out of thin air to offend Chinese people. Don’t u know that some phrases in the English language have adapted Chinese or phrases throughout history???
Overall a great lesson that highlights the importance of not translating directly from Chinese when communicating in English. However, I wouldn’t necessarily use the sentence “Did I make myself clear” in that scenario. For me, that’s making a declaration in the form of a question. I would use that with my kids or my staff who’s repeatedly disobeyed my instructions, but totally not with my boss if I want to keep my job. 😂

This is the first time I come across this channel. Pretty well presented. Thanks. ------ ( 1 ) Another very common use of “seated” is : “Please remain seated” ( which of course does not have the same meaning as “Please sit down” or “Please be seated” ). I think it is uncommon to say “Please sit down”, even in Chinese ( except perhaps from a teacher to a class of students ). ------ ( 2 ) Another form is “Hang on”, or “Hang on, let me think”. “Hold your horses” probably gives an impression that the person you speak to is rushing out lots of viewpoints. “I’ll be with you shortly” is only suitable if I have many other people to serve, I believe. For example, the receptionist at the counter of a hotel. Maybe not be suitable for a subordinate to say to his / her boss. ------ ( 3 ) “I see” should be the most common. “Got you” is good too. “Appreciated” is brief and exact. ------ ( 4 ) I absolutely hate it when someone said “Do you understand”, “Do you understand what I mean”, even in Chinese. Or even worse, “If you don’t understand what I mean, forget it” ( which actually happened, believe it or not ). “Did I make myself clear” is more commonly from boss to subordinate. I think “if you need any clarification on any point, please don’t hesitate to do that” is quite appropriate and polite, though slightly lengthy. ------ ( 5 ) “Go ahead” is also more like from boss to subordinate. “After you” should be appropriate to say to people who you know well, or people who you do not know at all. ------

Thanks for liking my comments. Thanks also for your reply, which is exactly what I hope to receive ( just kidding 🙃 ) So far I have watched a few more of your videos, and there are many of what you teach which I did not know before. Just one quick example, when I learned letter writing ( which was ages ago, and I was also taught by a British gentleman, but in secondary school, not in primary school, I only started to learn English in Primary 3 / 4 ), I think I was taught that “Yours sincerely” is for business, and “Yours faithfully” is for friends. Anyway, to cut it short, normally I am too lazy to subscribe any channel ( I seldom post any comment anyway ), and too lazy to give “likes”. But I think I will subscribe your channel, and give you some “likes”. Thanks for posting all your videos. Keep up with the good ‘work’. @@MelodyTam

Thanks for replying to my message about 2 months ago. You are probably right. For my own generation, only a VERY small % of parents and grandparents spoke English at home. So we did NOT get much chance to listen to English at all. Similarly, we only wrote in English at school, and only during some of the lessons. So, Singaporeans should be better in both listening comprehension and written English as you said. But it should be TOTALLY DIFFERENT now. But now of course I am NOT familiar with the current situation in HK / Singapore.

Too funny. Just the other day I was on line for the restroom at a restaurant and the person ahead didn’t try one of the doors and it was unoccupied. But I did and before I went in, I asked her, “Do you want to go first?” She declined, “No, you’re fine.” I think the context of how you use the phrase matters. In this case I thought nothing of its use and I know she was not offended. But Americans are less disciplined vs the Brits about language. Also we are a country of immigrants, we are understanding of non native speakers.
