My husband worked his ass off for our family and in no way, shape or form will I let them disrespect him. Now they’re grown & 1 has a 4 year old son and the other has a daughter on the way. I see my son father his son like his dad fathered him and without a word I smile knowing they’ll never accept that disrespect towards them or ANYONE else whether they make the same as someone, a different race, religion, sex, etc. makes me proud. I felt estranged from my people cause I grew up in a white neighborhood in the suburbs. I was never accepted the same by the black kids that grew up in the hood and shared those experiences. So I completely understand the feeling, but I would never crash out my life just to belong. You have be strongminded enough to forge your own way and connect with your people as best you can...sure you may never fit in perfectly...but that's life. You have to be mature enough to understand that your parents also put you in a position to not have to go through and deal with what some of your peers had to as well.

I graduated from high school in 1996. Right around the time of Pac and Biggies's death, right in the middle of the east coast west coast beef. At that time our culture valued street cred a lot more than it does in these modern times. I grew up and suburbs and I felt the disconnect from other black kids that grew up in the hood. I saw so many other black kids that grew up in the suburbs ruin their lives chasing that validation and acceptance from the hood and the streets. You have to value the advantages in life your parents worked hard and put themselves in a position to give you. There are other lanes in life where you will find the people that appreciate you for you. You may never ever feel as accepted or may never have as strong of a bond with those black kids that grew up in the hood together, but as you get out and explore the world, you'll find your place. It ain't even that big of a thing for kids coming of age in this generation. He really making dumb choices trying to be what he doesn't have to be.

But being capable of violence and the understanding of when to use that is what determines the intelligence and integrity, morality of a man. It’s not just about respecting others it’s about respecting one’s self. You can lose even when you have won. What are you willing to sacrifice when you allow yourself to loose control. Nor can you woop everyone and by that I mean, there is nothing fair about surviving and for one man it’s about loosing a parking spot for another that spot might be worth killing for. That’s way before the internet and ego’s. We can’t live paranoid but that’s not the same as living reckless.
