Just a quick question on your hanna nitrite reading of 13.When multiplied by 3.29 and divided by 1000 to give ppm then this = .042. Is this not a high reading for nitrite when the ideal is zero or have I worked this out wrong.
@TelfordKoiPond2 жыл бұрын
Hi Darryl👍😊. From hours and hours of trawling the internet and picking the brains of some experienced dealers I have been advised that the ideal level for both Ammonia and Nitrite is a reading of below 0.5 parts per million. My reading came out at 0.042 parts per million which is well below that level (even if my reading had been 10 times higher it would still have been below 0.5ppm at 0.42ppm). Because we are dealing with such small numbers, the decimal points can be confusing 🤔. Just a word of caution, if you actually achieve zero Ammonia and/or zero Nitrite in your pond that means there isn’t any food for the Nitrifying bacteria to eat and therefore they will die off and you will start getting a Nitrite spike😡. It’s all a balancing act really😊👍. Thank you for watching and asking this question, always best to ask…..I’m doing it all the while👍🈲🐟😊

@@darrylc2712 no problem at all Darryl👍😊. In hindsight I should have bought the normal Nitrite tester that gives the results in ppm instead of the low range one I did buy that gives results in ppb, would have saved me having to divide the results by 1000☹️. Have a great season👍😊

with the chlorine tester I shake it for 30 seconds before starting the 1 minute timer on the tester so that it has the whole minute for the particles to settle, I had an issue of it saying random reading like 0.6 out of the pond and 0.3 out of the tap which makes no sense but allowing the particles to settle during the one minute timer gave me consistent reading's of 0.3 out of the tap 0.0 in the pond.

Could have found a bigger pair of scissors to open them sachets with Phil...🙄😁 I only have the total chlorine meter, and I have a thin plastic stick that I use to carefully stir the reagent inside the tube as I always find you tend to get a small amount of powder that just sticks to the bottom of the tube and doesn't dissolve. Probably doesn't make a difference but it drives me wild not seeing it all dissolved 🤣 probably why I haven't bought any of the other Hannah meters as any slight discrepancy outside of acceptable tolerances would send me cuckoo 🤪😭 Also I do believe the TC meters have a accuracy of something like 0.03 +/- either way, so I try not to get too worked up with a .03 reading, it is hard not to though so I always chuck a little dechlora in to be on the safe side 😂 Looking smart in the filter house now👌 fish are looking fantastic too👍

Hi Phil, old video I Know!🤦♂️ But I really need your help trying to wrap my brain around something that is really bugging me with the Ammonia Hanna tester. I have the same one as you btw. Now, the way I understand it is that Ammonia comes in two forms, free Ammonia NH3/NH3-N and Ionised Ammonia NH4/NH4-N. The two combined make up TOTAL AMMONIA. Still with me? I hope so 😂 this is what our liquid test kits test for, Total Ammonia. Now, here's the part where it gets confusing, well for me at least. It is said that the Ammonia that is toxic to fish is the free Ammonia which would be NH3/NH3-N. This is what the Hanna meter tests for. Now when you get the first reading and times it by 1.214, all this is doing is using the entire molecule weight of the entire ammonia molecule (1 part nitrogen, 3 parts hydrogen) for the final free Ammonia reading. Now as I understand it from Various charts, we are trying to keep the free Ammonia Concentration from going above 0.02mg/l which is dependable on pH and temperature, and is calculated from a total Ammonia reading 🤔😑 If I'm correct then yours and my free Ammonia readings from the Hanna are apparently too high🤷♂️ Plzz help, look into this too if you don't mind, I'm laying here not being able to sleep 😭😭😭😂😂😂 ps. I think about things a lot🤦♂️
@TelfordKoiPond2 жыл бұрын
Hi Si🖐. This one made my head hurt☹️. Not sure this will help but this is my understanding. Free Ammonia is NH3-N and this is what the Hanna Test gives you before you do any calculations so for my last water test this was 0.050. To turn this to total ammonia NH3), multiply the reading by 1.214, making my last reading 0.061. This Total ammonia (NH3) reading is what liquid lasts such as NT Pondlab 200 tests for and they give a scale of 0 to 0.5 mg/l ppm as being acceptable so the 0.061 reading from a Hanna tester is way, way below that , so not sure what your concern is. Are you getting your decimal places mixed up? Where are you getting your 0.02mg/l from and is that just 0.02mg/l or is it 0.02mg/l ppm?
@UpNorthKoiPond2 жыл бұрын
@@TelfordKoiPond this is where the confusion lies. From the research I have done, and I've even gone to the point of calling Hanna themselves to clarify my own confusion 😂 and they themselves have indeed said to me that NH3-N is just the Nitrogen content of the Ammonia, and NH3 is the Free Ammonia content in it's entirety combining both the Ammonia and Nitrogen molecules. You think it made your head hurt, I've been trying to wrap my head around it for days🤯🤯 Total Ammonia is the combination of NH3 and NH4 (Un-ionised Ammonia & Ionised Ammonia) Although some test kits just say NH3 on the bottle, this is misleading as the kit is actually a measurement of total Ammonia as they're not accurate enough to calculate the free Ammonia like the Hanna testers are. The API test kits in particular DO say on the bottle NH3/NH4 solution which is total Ammonia, NH3 OR NH4 on there own only make up one part of the Ammonia form. I am so sorry if I've confused anything, but I felt it was important to get this information straight if my suspicions was correct. And after speaking to Hanna Instruments, it seems they have confirmed what I was curious about. Please feel free to make your own enquiry as like I said, from the research I've done, free form Ammonia really shouldn't be exceeding 0.02mg/l 🙏 take care, hit me back with any of your own conclusions👍👍
@TelfordKoiPond2 жыл бұрын
@@UpNorthKoiPond Thats really interesting because (changing the subject slightly) the old NT Labs Pondlab 200 Nitrite test states NO2 on the top of the colour chart but NO2-N (ppm) on the bottom so by that logic, its the actual reading that comes out of the Hanna Nitrogen tester that we should be using as that is NO2-N, so for me ....0.058 whereas we are all multiplying that by 3.29 to get Nitrite NO2. This makes mine 0.191mg/l ppm. Most sites I've looked at say as close to 0 as you can but below 0.25mg/l ppm is OK. My neighbour travels all over the country testing water for a living so now that you've raised my curiosity, I'm going to speak to him about all this to see what his take on it is 👍
