What a lovely compilation of railway crossings! I really enjoy your impressions from Japan every time, it's really a beautiful country. If you are often in Hokkaido, you may check out the railway crossing of Toya (Muroran Line) right to the west of the station, it is located directly in front of a red torii from Abuta shrine.

They are diverse for a reason - other than Shinkansen (which is standard-gauge for a reason), the other lines are diverse to the point of being *branded* like automobile brands - it would be like Toyota/Honda/Nissan applied to rail lines.
