Your story really resonates with me. I left KL at 18 to study in the U.S., expecting it to be like the NYC or LA portrayed in Hollywood movies, but I landed in the Midwest and realized how different it was. I couldn’t afford NYU, but after graduating, I was fortunate to secure a job in the SF Bay Area and get my H1B visa during the OPT period, After a few years of navigating the tedious immigration process, I eventually obtained my green card. Now, after more than a decade in the Bay, totally feel that the American Dream isn’t what it used to be. I’ve made plans to move back, and after spending so many years in the US, I truly believe Malaysia is the best place, especially for those who appreciate both Eastern and Western influences. Many of us feel caught in between-not American enough, yet not fully Asian or Chinese either. =)
