Here at Tora no Tsume, in both the Aikijujutsu and the Ryu no Tate styles, we only use ten judo throws. Of course, there are variations to each throw as well as techniques to counter and set up those throws, but the core of all of our throwing techniques is these ten.
Students from white to black are responsible for these throws. We encourage learning as much from as many credible sources as they can, embrace all arts, but these ten throws give the students enough variation to both understand throwing and have a backup for their backup.
These ten throws cover sweeps, reaps, trips, hip hinges, lifts, and sacrifice throws. Our philosophy is learn the ten throws. Work out what you do well and perfect that throw. Then have a backup for your best throw and a backup for your backup. Keep the whole list to pass on to your students. We understand that not every throw is suited for everyone. We try to have fun with it though.
Also, these are the throws that I will be doing on the "1000 Judo Throws" video. For those of you that actually read the show notes, I am not going to be doing 1000 judo throws to X here. That would be cruel and terrible training. If anything, I would do 500 and have him do 500 so we both get some of the pain and suffering...I mean so we both get some of the work.
If someone is going to get injured I would prefer it to be me. Because of that I am going to be doing the throws on Bob the grappling dummy. Make no mistake though, it will still be a challenge. Until then, I hope you enjoyed the video and at least found it entertaining. Train hard and I will see you on the mats.
