@@MMLL369 used for 60 yrs, 81a & black & white filters & IR. Only exception on a mirror lens & the filter is part of the designed optical path. U have to remove the uv from the REAR before u replace a filter u want to use. Buy perfectly plain glass (not cheap) . By the way all glass are really liquid ; look at your old windows.
depends what u shoot. There was a photographer who used sandpaper to treat his Hasselbrad lens (NOT filter !) to shoot young Scandin. gals. His specialized lenses; better than Softars? He is prob. still alive. p.s. I regret not buying the set of wavelength-specific (i.e. frequency) filters yrs ago; no longer produced/available.

Hoya & Tokina do supply glass to the camera manuf. incl. Nikon (only when in production crunch or always steady?)
in my film days , aside from filters for b&w, the 2 essentials were a PL & an angle finder. a CPL is LPL w/ a quarter wave plate, for most opticals that don't live well w/ linear.
