Kiwakana's unique vocals underpinned many of OK Jazz's numbers....a beautiful voice indeed...had a distinctly sweet-sad haunting/ or call it infectious/ edge to it ....the glue that held the vocal ranges together in unison...This Artist just like his colleagues Lukoki, and to some extent Checain , never received the broader mention and acclaim which was certainly duly DESERVED!!!!

@George Ojwang I beg to differ. TP OK Jazz was teeming with talent. Again it should not be lost to us that Lutumba Ndomanueno aka Simaro Massiya (RIP) was recruited into TP OK Jazz primarily as a composer and was the main song writer for TP OK Jazz and also played rhythm guitar in most of his compositions. He was the soul of the band and no one including Franco himself composed more songs than Le Poeté who also deputised Le Grande Maitre as vice president of TP OK Jazz. In the 80s Aimé Kiwakana featured in many songs especially as back for Josky and even had his own composition like "Eperdument" under the TP OK JAZZ label. The quartet of Josky Kiambukuta, Aimé Kiwakana, Lokombe Ntal, and Madilu System teamed up in a number of albums or LPs

Other than Pap Noel, it seems that everyone else on that stage is dead. That's sad because this event is less than three decades old and most of these folks were in their 40s then. Life expectancy of Congolese musicians, and people, is really low.

What caused this low life expectancy? Was it the SIDA pandemic?
@Zaramoku Жыл бұрын
@@ANDAREJO A handful of them succumbed to it but most of their deaths stemmed from overindulgence in alcohol and drugs. Added to their peril was impoverishment -- the money they made wasn't commensurate to their excruciating workloads. Those who didn't write songs barely made livings, even some song writers were cheated. Long after Franco was dead, Lola Chechain found out (from a reporter who was interviewing him) that a song he had submitted to the band in the late 1980s, but was told that it didn't make the cut, was actually released by Franco on a different label and made lots of money, none of which a he saw a dime. He asked for the song to be played to him (which the reporter did) for him to believe that the song was indeed released.
