I have loved Nana mouskouri ever since I saw her perform the most intimate performance for around 20 people in south London in the 1980s

this was my special song as a child my mother would play this on the paino and her beautiful mezzo soprano voice lulled me to sleep every night

Eleanor Baldwin - Brown Ελληνίδα ήταν η μητέρα σας; Was your mother greek? Also listen to the song Πίσω απ' τις τριανταφυλλιές (Behind the rosebushes). She is singing in a black and white film looking almost unrecognisable without glasses and a bit chabby. You may feel melancholic though.

Beautiful song, but rather unusual lyrics for a Greek composer. First heard it when i was about 12 years old . I'm 71 now , it wasn't till I got into my very early twenties that I realized listening to the words of this song very carefully , that it is in fact a song about a prostitute . Laughed my head off when it dawned on me . This song has a catchy melody and Nana sings it superbly . It won the 1960 academy award for best original theme song for the movie named after it . However I can tell you for a fact Manos Hajidakis was not impressed , he didn't even show up at the academy awards night to pick up his Oscar . He truly undervalued his own talent .Sometimes I think he was a troubled man .

It has an interesting history! As you say, the original - "the lads of Piraeus" - is quite earthy! English words - never on a Sunday - are quite innocent by comparison. The later German ones are "Ein Schiff wird kommen" (a ship will come), but earlier the English version was in fact rendered into German, as Nie am Sontag - you will find it on kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZ2YfGiYqsx3hs0, among some other interesting novelties (such as the only German version I know of Que Sera Sera).

I just hope this isn't too bad of a translation of this song! I send out from my window, one and two and three and four kisses and at the harbor arrive one and two and three and four birds How I wish I had one and two and three and four children and that they all will grow up to become strong men for the sake of Piraeus. No matter how hard I look, I cannot find another port that drives me as crazy as Piraeus And when it gets dark, songs come to me and all my lucky pennies change into children. When I come out of my door, there isn't a one I do not love And when I sleep at night, I know I will dream of him. I put gems around my neck and some pearls, because at night, I go down to the harbor looking for a stranger.

Mπορει να μην ακουω Νανα Μουσχουρη,αλλα μου κανει εντυπωση και μονο,που ακουω την επανεκτελεση αυτου του τραγουδιου,που ερμηνευσε πρωτη η σαχλη Μερκουρη,στην ταινια του Ζιλ Ντασεν.Ενα τραγουδι που ποτε δεν εκτιμησε ο Μανος Χατζιδακης,και ας πηρε το Οσκαρ καλυτερου τραγουδιου.Αληθεια,αυτη η επανεκτελεση της Νανας Μουσχουρης,ποτε ακριβως κυκλοφορησε;
