Is this T Rex optical illusion cool or what?
The video is by Brusspup, who has recorded several other
illusions. It was first created by master illusion-maker Jerry Andrus,
in honour of the science and maths writer Martin Gardner (see
Gathering 4 Gardner, Inc); however, Andrus used a dragon for his
illusion.

About constructing his T Rex optical illusion, Brusspup commented...
"I've always wanted to try this illusion with several of these at once.
I wanted to use 20 or 30 but after I tried a test with only 12, I
realized 20 or 30 was going to be too many.
So, another thing I've always wanted to try was to have a large
version. The original file was about 9 feet X 9 feet. I had to split
the image into 4 files so the printer as my local print shop could
print it.
I traced all of the pieces on cardboard which I used to build a
support structure for the prints. I used small pieces of cardboard
and hot glue to make the structure really solid.
One problem that I had was that the paper for the large dragon
was really shiny. So if you look closely you can see the reflection
of the eyes on the top and side panels. I bought some matte spray
to try and minimize the reflections. It worked a little.
Over all I was happy with the results."

SO HOW DOES THE T REX OPTICAL ILLUSION WORK?
The key to this is the way the human brain sees perspective -
specifically convex and concave shapes - coupled with its amazing
ability to pick a face out of patterns...
This is called Pareidolia - see en.wikipedia.or....
Your brain wants to interpret the dinosaur as having a face, and
faces are convex, which means the sides of the face curve away
from you - when you look at someone’s face, their nose is closer
to you than their ears.
But the T Rex's head is actually concave with the sides of the
head curving toward you from the centre. This sets up a
contradiction in your brain. The optical cues you receive as you
move around the dinosaur get mixed up, and you think it’s turning
to follow you.
A big cue is the eyes. The eye on the right (the T Rex's left eye) is
below the left one in the cardboard cut-out, and is actually farther
away from you.
However, your brain really wants to see a face, and if the face
pops out, it must be facing a bit to the left, and therefore your
brain thinks the eye on the right has to be closer to you.
This dinosaur illusion (also called the paper dragon illusion) is all
to do with perspective.
The same thing happens with the nostrils, the teeth, and the
shape of the nose. All these cues are inverted, mucking up the
way your brain construes their position in space.
The lighting and shading are also critical to this making this
dinosaur optical illusion work. Sometimes the illusion is obvious
and other times it is hidden by the way light falls across the cut-out.
