I have so many comments about this video... your interviewing was top notch, you were able to get Kallie to talk in such detail. I shared this with my daughter who is a freshman in college studying genetic engineering. The way you share your success, challenges, and disappointments. My take away is, I am glad you found what makes you happy, and that you can make a living at.

Just opening KZbin and there are two of my favourite science presenters on one sofa, having a chat - what a time to be alive! ;-)

Damn it. Just clicked to get a taste of the video and one hour later, still here and engaged well past my bedtime. What I mean is... solid interview. 👍

Grateful I came across this. I’ve been an appreciative viewer of Eons for a few years but had never heard any of the people involved in making the show interviewed. There’s so much to think about here. And I’m a greater fan of Kallie as host and shaper of the program than I already was, now. Thank you.

I'm only 36 mins in so far and this is one of the most fascinating interviews I've ever seen! I really love Eons and I never really thought about all that goes into the episodes, so hearing about the process of making one is amazing.

90% male??? That's so shocking to me because I'm female and I flipping LOVE science videos and it's weird learning that I'm apparently the minority?
@pointlesstoll
@pointlesstoll 5 жыл бұрын
I think that sad truth is that there's a vast group of women and girls out there that would love these types of videos (don't even really need stats to confirm that, it's just self-evident), but the marketing algorithms responsible for serving them are heavily biased in other directions. The KZbin recommendation engine is flawed at *best*, and at its worst is helping propagate and reinforce stereotypical gender roles (among so much other awful trash that I don't even want to mention, let alone think about).
@Shadow81989
@Shadow81989 5 жыл бұрын
The recommendation engine is simply an algorithm, using statistics as an input, and creating the output accordingly. If, for example, enough female 12-16 year olds click on EVERY make up video and beauty blog there is, then it will recommend these videos to ALL female 12-16 year olds, no matter if that's what the specific person finds most interesting. It is tailored to increase view time, not to represent any political, sociological or whatever viewpoint.

@@Shadow81989 it is worth mentioning ad revenue has impact on the algorithm though.

@@pointlesstoll It doesn't help that female accounts are recorded to watch very specific videos that makes their demographic easier to generalise.

@@zebedeesummers4413 True! Although the exact algorithm is unknown (at least to me ;-) ), I would say it's probably maximizing for profit - which is based on ad revenue, which again is based on view time (more videos watched -> more ads shown). Other factors definitely come into play though.

I'm not here for dinosaurs, I'm here for the science of sofas. I want to build my own sofa and need to know what loads and boundary conditions I should consider. I also would like advice on what I should use as a fatigue assessment, acceptable number of cycles to failure and degradation over time. I want my money back.

Yeah, I noticed that in the edit and couldn't work out why it happened. Might be because it drops a frame each time the camera starts a new file? Hopefully it wasn't too distracting.

Stage makeup is its own thing. I was in the band for two musicals in school, and while the actors in _The Jungle Book_ was so obviously animal-looking that the amount of makeup they wore didn't really register, I vividly remember seeing one of the main actresses in _Hair_ backstage, and her makeup was *really* over the top, so that it would be visible enough to the audience when she was on stage.

I suspect you have the Flintstones to thank for the saber toothed tiger name but forget that and saber tooth cat too ....Smilodon??? That is my new favorite word, bar none. As far as the gender disparity in interest in science and tech goes, I would wager that a lot of it is down to peoples cultural norms as children so that only girls with a certain strength of personality will go against the apparent tide and want to play with the "boy" toys that encourage them towards science and tech. I don't think it's a conscious parental choice so much as a sort of unconscious bias reinforced by the way different types of toys and children's products are marketed. I have to qualify all that by admitting that I am in fact not female but, I have raised one so I do have at least some insight, however limited it might be.

youve probably already heard about the #skypeascientist thing? anyway that could be a way to get girls enthusiastic about watching science videos, skype a classroom and show them the women scientists on youtube. sometimes just knowing that there are women on youtube that make science videos can be really inspiring, especially to young girls cos its like "oh, it's not just a boy's club! i can do this too! this could be me in the future"

Talking about make up anytime I’m on camera I have to have my eyebrows drawn in. I don’t care about my oily sheen I don’t care about my red blotchiness I don’t care that my eyes look too small but I have to have darker eyebrows. And it’s not like I don’t have eyebrows in real life but on camera it’s the one thing that makes me feel like it’s not my face

it starts very young. I was telling Tony at DeepAstronomy, When I went looking for computer games for my daughters, they were almost all geared towards makeup, fashion, and social circles, but not only that, they were all poorly developed after-thoughts, with no play logevity... maybe two weeks at best. Boys go on to want to program and get further into science because they want to make games like the ones they played growing up... so many game programmers today are programmers because they played Quake as kids. What is the equivalent for girls? what is the "gateway pastime" that would lead girls into the sciences?
