35:06 I had never realized that before Húrin marched off to mankind's most devastating war yet, Tolkien had him say basically the exact same words that he and his friends would have heard over and over again at the beginning of WW1... Great, this story just keeps finding new ways to absolutely devastate me.

That one line is just so much more powerful coming from Tolkien “The war will be over by Christmas” it’s just such a heartfelt line coming from not only Húrin who did not now the gravity of his words but also from Tolkien who knew exactly what they meant.

I've got to say: the first time i read the unfinished tales' ( a lot more so than the silmarilion version ) take on turin i've asked myself "is this really tolkien?". It really served to deconstruct everything i thought i knew about the professor's writing style (mind you, i've not read the standalone 'children of hurin' novel before) and the kind of story i should expect from him. The children of hurin is my favorite tolkien story (even thought the characters may not be my favorite Tolkien characters). For this reason, I cannot explain further than "i never expected this from Tolkien" and I think that your way of presenting this story is one of the best ways i can think of honoring the professor's writing!

I tried to read the Silmarillion about 15 years ago, the writing was...regrettably, too much for me. I did manage to get through Beren & Luthean...but faltered on the rest and never completed it. However, your videos have not only rekindled the desire to havr another crack at it, but covered things in a way that is easy to grasp and full of emotion. Keep the first age alive! Keep the videos coming! Awesome, simply awesome work my man.

Get it soon, start reading it and you then maybe will be able to even get ahead of 🌈 Dave.😁

It's interesting to imagine the parallels that can be drawn between Hurin and Tolkein himself given his own experiences in war...that sort of optimistic apprehension about the end of the war, trying to stay positive yet knowing how bleak the reality of it was. However I dare not call it allegorical. 😅

I have always viewed this as Morgoth's greatest miscalculation. I will not give spoilers, but I think that for as dark as this story and it's sequels become, Morgoth's plans find their loose threads, and from this point forward there is a slow unwinding of his dark will. By the way, I was wondering where the music was from, because I quite enjoyed it. It wove quite nicely with the tale and exposed the shadow hiding in the light.

Turin's childhood fascinates me. His apparent stoicism, and shadowing of Lalaith, given what comes later with the other child of Hurin, is just devastating. Laughter taken from him at the age of five, and all that came after. Truly dark.

You just make me love Turin so much. I can just see him as a child, this gives me such a feel for what he must have been like. This has nothing at all to do with the video, but it's a happy thought my dearest friend and I were thinking of and I think you might appreciate it: can you imagine Aule's reaction to meeting Gimli when Legolas brought him to the undying lands? And vice versa? I think they both cry and don't hide it. I think Gimli treats Yavanna with the same courtliness he does Galadriel and Aule is beside himself with how happy he is that his wife and his creation are meeting and getting along. It's now one of my favorite things to imagine.

Hi Dave! The background music is softer here. I can focus on your beautiful voice. I would have been so disappointed if the music distracted me. The music in the books vs movies that I just went to listen to, was distracting. Overpowered your voice, and I couldn't focus on your explanation. I love the way you untangle Tolkien and don't want miss one word. Im not sure if you recently went back and added it, or being a newbie when they came out, I didn't notice it. The music here is not distracting. Perfect for me. Thank you Dave! True finesse with the timing and appropriateness of the music. Thanks Dave! I hope my comment is not confusing!😊❤

"The war will be over by Christmas." That line hits a bit different knowing they said that about the war Tolkien fought in. Knowing that in both cases they had no idea how badly the battle would turn out.

The moment I heard you relate Hurin's rosy prediction for victory by Yule, I immediately thought of the predictions forecast by various generals and politicians in 1914. One wonders if Tolkien knew of those predictions when he marched off.

Tears in my eyes listening to your retelling of the story of the children of Húrin rainbow Dave 👍👍❤❤. The saddest moment in this story for me is (spoiler alert) the last moment when Húrin met his wife at their children's grave 😥😥❤❤
