Agreed. And Melkor/Morgoth lost power for several other reasons (bestowing much of his power and essence into Arda to corrupt and bend it to his will, hence the term "Morgoth's Ring", pouring some more of his power unto his many servants) and continued to lose power as the countless ages passed leading up all the way to the end of the First Age where he was at his weakest, vastly inferior compared to what he once was as the greatest/mightiest of all the Valar by far in his prime in the beginning.

I am so excited to have reached the point in time that we all get to see RD’s treatment of this masterpiece of JRRT’s. This is one of my two favorites of the Legendarium, the other being the Tale of Beren and Luthien. Both stories stand, in my mind at least, as equally awesome. One is a tale of hope and love sprinkled with tragedy, while The Children of Hurin is a story of tragedy, woe, and despair, but, throughout it, you can’t help but admire Turin and his father’s defiance of evil. Such a great and tragic work of art.

I will add one more major mythological influence for Turin -- the tale of Sigurd and the Dragon. This is one of the great stories of Nordic myth, and is immediately what I thought of as I was reading The Children of Hurin. Some aspects of the story are profoundly similar. The dragons Glaurung and Fafnir, several traits of Turin and Sigurd, and even some of the darker details regarding the personal relationships in the story. As it happens, Tolkien also has a translation of Sigurd's story, which I can recommend wholeheartedly.

I like Turin because he is so unapologetically human. We can identify with him because we all know the dark things we hide from others in our hearts and most of us want to do right, but often by trying to do what we ‘believe’ is right we do the evil we do not wish to do and cause worse things to occur. Mankind in Tolkien’s world are different to Elves and Dwarves because they have a dual complex nature.

Túrin Turambar was the character I most identified with in my feverish 15yo brain. Valiant yet cursed, honorable yet enslaved, the Terror of Defiance yet unable, in the end, to overcome but still able to pass along hope. Strange, sometimes, how things work out....

Talking of the Gollum eucatastrophe. Gollum swore on the precious (the one ring) to protect his master and the Ring unknowingly brought about it’s own demise by punishing Gollum through the oath. As Frodo said to Gollum later after showing him mercy after Gollum’s betrayal he said “If you ever touch me again you will be cast into the Fires of Doom yourself”.

The absolute bravery of Hurin to not just endure the presence of Morgoth (once the second most powerful being in existence), but to taunt him and bring up the names of Manwe and Varda. I've always thought of the curse of 'Morgoth's Eyes' to be like the worst form of depression, the kind that twists everything good and pure til you can take no joy from it. Can't believe Eru let it happen to be honest but then we wouldn't have this amazing, heartrending tale.

Turin and Tuor are for me, Tolkien's take on "There but for the grace of god go I." So much of their story is the same... but one was favoured by the Gods, the other cursed.... and their lives went accordingly.

This book was one of the most dark and depressing ones for me to have read back when I was in my teens, exploring the saddest, most petty, most personaly horrifying chapters in the Silmarillion with more detail and none of the payoff in the form of the War of Wrath found in the Silmarillion. Which is to say I loved it, and I'm glad you're looking into it. Turin is a classic tragic hero, and a wonderfully human character to contrast with the similarly flawed, yet larger than life elven heroes like Feanor and Fingolfin, or the more successful classic heroes like Tuor and later Aragorn. The suffering he and his family go through at Morgoth's hands cements the dark lord as the true villain that he is (and not the sympathetic character modern writers would want him to be). Per chance, if you ever want to do a more relaxing topic, might I suggest looking into some of the poetry in Tolkiens "Adventures of Tom Bombadill," as well as other works contained within such as "Leaf by Niggle" or my personal out-of-Middle-Earth favorite, "Farmer Giles of Ham."

Thank you for turning me onto Tolkien. I honestly have no words to say how much I've appreciated your videos. You're a natural lecturer and as a former teacher (18 years coming to a sudden an inglorious end) I wonder if you've ever considered offering a guest lecture to universities to go along with your videos (teachers pay teachers, even). I don't think you need to be a credentialed/professional teacher to offer this interesting and incredibly well researched content. If you're interested, I'd be happy to share some pointers for lesson plans or such. You wouldn't be compromising your video content, just monetizing a portion of it to educate others and helping teachers with less experience come up with amazing and inspiring lessons. In an alternate universe, if I'd had a teacher who showed this much passion and interest in a subject as you show, I would've been a Tolkien scholar or gone into a similar field!

I wish we would get more modern authors like Tolkien. Don't get me wrong, there are some wonderful modern fantasy works. But Tolkien created another world as if he went there for 10 years, documented everything and then came back and wrote a fiction that took place in that world. You know an author is great when they can talk about their stories like they were living there when it all happened. They travel with their characters day by day in their mind while living here on earth.

100% agree with you on differences between Fëanor and Turin. Fëanor is a jerk an a-hole an arrogant spoiled brat, he is the best and he knows it. But Turin, he is prideful honorable and decent guy who just happens to be always in the wrong place and wrong time(maybe because of the curse). Tragic but marvelous, prideful but yet humble. I can go on and on cause he is so complex and i love this character very much. Children of Hurin is my second favorite book, most favorite is Beren and Luthien cause i’m romantic just like that😅

This is so awesome! I love this introduction and explanation of how Professor Tolkien painfully pieced together the character of Turin, all those years and from the 'germ' of the Legendarium beginnings. Even before a silmaril was thought of. Beowulf and Kalevala influences: Kalevala, the dwelling place of the poem's chief characters, is a poetic name for Finland, meaning “land of heroes.” Thank you Dave, for your in depth and comprehensive research into Tolkien's writings. I'm anticipating this series on The Children of Hurin.

The story of Kullervo seems to inspire other authors, notably Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone. Now that I think of it, Turin and Elric share some traits, the dragon helm, the black blade, and being doomed to a fate they can't change.

This is my favorite story. I hate when I get a happy ending and I feel cheated. Nope, Túrin / Kullervo give you the opposite and it's more savory than bittersweet. Great video about a most tragic, hardcore story! As a practicing occultist I can tell you curses work both by interfering with people's minds into making them make wrong choices, enhancing their flaws of character in detriment to their good traits and talents, as well as by generating adverse outside circumstances for them that would result in them being harmed one way or another. There's more to it than that, as in this case the curse targeted an entire family, but the same applies nonetheless. Having that out of the way, I think Turin was always well intended and striving to do good, or at least fix wrongs. But in doing so he kept kicking himself in the nuts as a result of the effects of the curse. The results turned out awful for him and those around. I think he's microcosm must've been something. Besides being a possible case study for psychology, I think he must've felt anguish, sorrow and all sorts of pains on a constant basis. But I think his strong-willed nature made him feed on that and drive him onward. In some ways it's kinda like a Sith who harnesses power from pain and misery, both his own and others', but in this case Turin chooses to use that power to fight the evil that affects him and his surrounding environment instead of growing in power just so he'd end up subjugating others and thus becoming that same evil. It's true he's got his character flaws that work against him, but not even the Eldar were perfect. But just as in the case of every real life person, his flaws kept dragging him down. The fact they were inflated and empowered by the curse only made it much, much worse. Btw, I felt the scene with Hurin shouting towards Turgon as utterly heartbreaking. I'm going to stop as not to give spoilers to others, but that's the perfect image of despair to me 😢 Looking forward towards another outstanding series! 👏👏👏👏

This is absolutely so exciting. I cannot wait for this whole series of videos dissecting the whole story. Re Feanor vs Turin complexity. I’d wager that though Feanor is not as psychologically nuanced as Turin that is not to say his story is less emotionally deep or profound or certainly not less intense. They’re both great dramatic characters in different ways. I am happier to have them both in the story than one or the other 😊

Children of Húrin is my second favorite Tolkien story behind LOTR itself. And this video is great, however, I feel like you need to cut our boy Fëanor some slack too, I believe somewhere it is mentioned that the Valar consider Melkor corrupting Fëanor and the Nolder his worst feat, so he shouldn't be completing judged on his actions.

Finally! The 1st Age continues. I got a little bit excited when this popped up. A little disappointed that the 1st video is a 50 min foreword, but it's the etymology & background & the examinations of Saxon mythology etc that give us insight into Tolkien's mind that really make you stand out from the other Tolkien channels. The most interesting foreword ever. I have a criticism of Eru Ilúvatar but I'll follow your lead & wait til the end of the story.

The way you connected Finnish tales to the Legendarium, that was brand new to me. I usually think Finland as more...Eurasian, not so much Nordic. It really helps me understand that the lines on maps do not reflect culture. Well done, m8!

The Finnish language is one of the last few remaining of those that existed before the Indo-European migrations into Europe. The folklore is a blend of that with Nordic influences from the west and Slavic ones from the east. It's all really fascinating, and so different from what most of us are used to.
