Good examples of possible applications(there are many many applications for each)of postures in combat, viewers should not get caught up in the aesthetics/flow that you see or dont see . This taijiquan's kung fu is very internal, subtle externally. It is not as obvious as Yang Cheng Fu's taiji with its large frame and obvious boxing postures, TT Liang's taiji came from Cheng Man Ching and is subtle yet contained in its gentle looking postures is taiji's explosive power/fajin. You still see versions of most Yang postures but the focus is more on the internal which is why to the uninformed it can look floppy/to soft compared to that of Yang Cheng Fu or Yang Shao Hao lineages.

I WOULD LOVE THEM TO RELEASE THEIR VERSION PLAYED IN EARNEST AND NOT FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES. THAT'S WHAT WE NEED TO VIEW AND ANALYZE. IT WAS PRETTY GOOD ASDE FORM THE WAITING WHICH DESTROYS CONTINUITY AND THROWS OFF THE FLOW OF JIN AS WELL. YES, THE MIND STILL CONTINUES I KNOW. BUT THEY AREN'T PLAYING AT THAT LEVEL. IJS XIE XIE

Hi Jonathan, do you have any photos or videos of Li Jin Fei?

What is your interest in him?

I became curious about him after reading his name in 'Steal My Art' in 2014. Since then I have tried to find out as much about him as possible with not a lot of success. I was told by Stuart Olson and Gordon Muir that there is a video/videos of him - I'd love to see them. I also read recently that Master Liang said 'He was an excellent man; his art was beautiful' which further fuelled my interest in Li Jin Fei. I would appreciate it if you could help in any way.

I'm sure you spent a lot of time learning this but the movements don't flow. It lacks the beauty and gracefulness that tai chi is known for.

The flow you are talking about is not as it often appears. To an untrained eye, or one that does know what to look for, Tai Chi movements can appear to "flow like a river". A much better description of the Tai Chi movements is the action of a pendulum (or a sine wave) where there is an ever so slight (between the swings or, in the case of TC, between the postures) pause as the energy transfers from potential to kinetic. The form you are viewing emphasizes this exchange.

Thank you for the explanation. I think that this video of Master Liang shows what I am trying to say. It is done very different than the two in the video above and it has a "flow" to it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5LadqGniNyEbM0

That film is a beautiful performance ... but that is not the point. He had not, at that time, fully developed his skill and technique of using rhythm. I studied with Liang for 15 years and we had a very close relationship. We founded the The Tai Chi Dance Association where together we set up a number of studios over the years in Boston. During this time we worked on reviewing all aspects of this 2 person form, photographing him performing all the postures and writing out how to execute them properly (The Tai Chi Two Person Dance - Ride Books). We discussed the film clip you mentioned and he described it as "unrefined". Another part of that film shows Liang demonstrating a Tai Chi sword sparing set. This too, although really beautiful, shows Liang using "too much arm movement" (his words). I would recommend you not be impressed so much by the external movements and make a study of what is actually transpiring within the movements and the transaction between the players. Liang, when what I thought to be highly skilled Tai Chi practitioners came to our studio to demonstrate their forms, would later say to me: 'beautiful, beautiful! Nothing to do with Tai Chi, but BEAUTIFUL!"
