You’ve got to love that calm, relaxed hum from the engine as the boat races across the water at speeds in well in excess of what even a built piston engine can do. It’s SO unlike the way that your average supercharged big block sounds like it’s nearing the end of its useful life under similar conditions.

Actually, the PT governor, which keeps the rotor speed in a heli constant, is used in this boat as a kind of rev-limiter for the jet drive. It is set at 100%, and Gord controls the fuel to the gas generator with that foot pedal. So the PT speed is directly proportional to water-jet thrust, and it goes up and down as needed to drive the boat.

During a race, Gord is continually working the throttle between flight idle and 100%. Today, I think he was using a little less than 100% when he was hammering on it. ... maybe out of consideration for his first-time passenger, but maybe because the lake isn't that big.

The boat driver doesn't seem to care about his feet for lack of proper footwear. This is the same as riding a motorcycle with flip flops and shorts=bad news. Very nice little fishing trollor. P.S. You guys do a fantastic job there. Good luck with your endeavors and yes, that is one fast SOB.

Dear Craig. Dear, dear Craig... ... ... you are saying that a boat is the same as a motorcycle, implying that, among other things, a lake is the same as a road... that water is the same as pavement. That having feet inside a hull is the same as having feet on pegs ( outside the (nonexistent!) hull). I don't know how to respond, except incredulously. Yeah, that's the word. PS: When this video was recorded, the driver in the flip flops was a former world champion jet boat racer, so I trusted him to know a thing or two. I guess he still is, and I still do!

I had a couple of cameras, but I had no idea what this check ride was going to involve, so I just winged it. Couldn't use the head-cam, and I just threw one cam to Walter. He got some great shots. In the boat, I was holding my cam with both hands trying to fight the G's and the wind. I can't believe how well it turned out. It's good my attention was on the camera, because what I was seeing in terms of acceleration was totally fantastic. You see what I saw!

When I watched your vid, I recognized right away that it was an Allison ( RR ) 250 starting up. I love that sound. Then you show the engine with its nicely made exhaust stacks, and there sits a sweet little 250. It's either a C-18 at about 320Hp or a C-20 at about 400, I can't tell. That's a beautiful boat, and it planes gracefully. You guys did a nice job.

As for running at high power, engines get more efficient and cleaner combustors as the science and engineering improves. The three you mentioned are all designs from the 50s, 40s, and 60s, respectively. When they are working hard, you'll likely see a hint of black smoke in the exhaust.

Well, efficiency is a ratio of something to something. It all depends what you define efficiency as. 1) It is an internal combustion engine 2) Aaah! you mean piston engine ! 3) fuel consumption at full power ? same for both 4) fuel consumption at idle or part power, pistons are the best by far 5) power output per pound or kilo of engine weight? turbines baout 5 times better. ...It all depends.

You could remove the PT section easily, as I have shown, and will try to again. Taking on the project of fabricating a jet thrust nozzle ( it would not have to be variable), even of fixed area, would be a huge project. I know it has been done, but I have not seen the finished project. Why, though? Pure turbojets are almost useless below about 500 mph, and are only halfway fuel efficient above Mach1. That's why no aircraft use them any more.

Only an American could think it was a good idea to put a turbine in a jetboat. Protip: when Bill Hamilton invented the "jetboat" it was referring to the "water jet" not an actual jet turbine. :P

Nothing is supposed to smoke, but it is very common for any gas turbine engine to emit a bit of smoke on startup. As I've mentioned before, a while back I was on an Embraer 190 at the Calgary airport one sunny day, and when the captain started engine #2, the entire aircraft was enveloped in a cloud of white smoke. Those CF34 turbofans are modern, FADEC-controlled, high technology engines... and sometimes you get a smokey start.

So your efficiency is fuel consumption at full power... The T58 is rated at 1200 Hp, and I understand the Veyron is about 1000. Your information is wrong. the T58 consumes 0.61 pounds per hour, not gallons, per Hp So: 1200 X 0.61/60/8(lbs per gallon) = 1.52 gallons per minute. And the Veyron, corrected to 1200 hp: 1.4X1.2 = 1.68 Given my value for pounds per gallon of Kerosene is a guess... I'd say it's a tie.
