On 14 April 1945, several Ta-152 fighters were scrambled from their base at Neustadt-Glewe to intercept some Hawker Tempests strafing targets at the nearby town of Ludwigslust. The exact number of involved airplanes and even the outcome is not agreed upon by various sources describing the battle. Can we get to the bottom of this? Check out in this video.

The TA-152 fighter was the design really wanted by famous, talented fighter plane designer, Kurt Tank. But it took time to field the TA-152. Instead the interim FW-190D 'Long Nose Dora' entered service in the late summer of 1944. Just over 700 FW-190D fighters were produced yet the declining Luftwaffe badly needed thousands more and the trained pilots to fly them along with adequate fuel supplies. Kurt Tank really wasn't enthusiastic about the FW-190D as his ultimate goal was the TA-152. Fortunately the powers that be decided upon production of the interim FW-190D. It was fortunate for the Allies that Germany could not produce the needed numbers of FW-190D Long Noses, nor the necessary numbers of trained pilots along with declining stocks of aviation fuel. When the TA-152 finally made its debut in the spring of 1945, the war was already lost. From even a short distance it was easy to mistake the TA-152 for a FW-190D. Only a sharp-eyed Allied pilot might notice the slightly longer fuselage and the longer wings. The FW-190D, as an interim design, used the standard FW190 wings. The TA-152's long wings were intended for better high altitude reach and performance against Allied bombers. Also the Luftwaffe expected the Americans to deploy their newer, high-altitude B-29 Superfortress over Germany. The TA-152 and the FW-190D carried the same armament of two, 13mm heavy machine guns in the nose cowling and two, MG151 20mm cannon, one in each wing root. It was never explained why Focke Wulf limited both aircraft to only two, MG151 cannons while the standard FW-190 fighters carried four, 20mm cannon. The exception was a heavy-armed version of the standard FW-190 armed with two, MK108 30mm cannon, one in each wing, intended for ground support and if necessary, bomber destroyer work. The top speed of the TA-152 prototype was a blistering 472mph. On one occasion, while flying the prototype himself, Kurt Tank was bounced by a flight of possibly four (4) P-51D Mustangs. Tank simply pushed the throttle to the wall, leaving the Mustangs far to the rear, straining fruitlessly to catch up.

there is a true story of the Ta 152 aircraft designer Kurt Tank ("tonk") who took flight in a Ta 152 H back in late 1944. He was flying to Cottbus for a meeting at the FW plant there. Nonetheless, his aircraft was unarmed at that time when he was flying. While airborne he saw some US P-51s off in the distance coming towards him closing quickly. He then put the engine at full throttle and activated the MW 50 engine boost. The Ta 152 then “disappeared" away from them. I love the P-51s, now, but that FW Ta 152 H was crazy fassst

Fiiirst 😂although the Ta152H was built for a high altitude fighter, it was efficient at low level and high speed. Even if there is Guns jamming and supercharger issue. And we known the reason why Sepp Sattler was killed, May be shot down by Tempest

In der ganzen Litaratur gibt es keinen hinweis darauf,das er von einer Tempest abgeschossen wurde.Das deutsche Jagtflieger Ass Willi Reschke hingegen hat bei einem Einsatz gleich zwei Tempest herunter geholt.

Excellent video, as always. It is incredible to see the Ta-152 outmanoeuvring a Tempest at low altitude. I always imagine that those long thin wings will snap at the first high-g pull. Can't wait for the next episode. Btw, I really liked the 'old movie' effect.

Thanks! I guess the wings were flexible :) I was also happy with the effect. It turned out that the final elements for the 'gun camera footage' was to play them slower and without sound.

If i remember correctly, Tank had to use steel wing spars to support the wing loads, mostly because aluminum was extremely scarce and a structure complex enough to handle the loads would not be feasible at that time. The steel spars, albeit heavy, were much cheaper and allowed much more competitive G-limits.

You didnt see a Ta-152 outmanoeuvring anything. You saw a CGV. It could be utter bollox or it could be accurate - you have no idea.

The Ta-152 had lighter wing loading so, in theory it should more maneuverable. The Tempest was significantly faster at sea level than the German fighter, but fortunately for Reschke he caught Mitchell in a low inertia situation after climbing from a strafing attack.

It may have lost some acceleration and roll rate but those high aspect ratio wings give the Ta-152H some truly marvelous sustained turning capability compared to the FW-190. A real joy to turn fight with compared to many others. An excellent depiction of its most famous engagement.

Indeed, high altitude subsonic fighters got there through low wing loading, which inherently gave them superior turning performance. This is also why the P-51 was a good dogfighter.

This combat is too in Osprey´s "Focke Wulf Fw 190 Aces of the Western Front" from John Weal ..... The book say Sattler and Mitchell were buried side by side in the Neustad-Glewe cemetery with full military honors.

Thx for this story about Reschke. But the Ta 152 was neither the best FW190 variant nor the ultimate german fighter. The Ta 152 was a consequently developed variant of the FW190 D9 to D13 variants, especially for intercepting of heavy bombers like the B29 in very high altitudes up to 14.500 m. As we know the very few produced examples (150) never engaged B29, so they were tragically used as medium altitude daylight fighter. 7 kills vs. 4 losses are not great. In this scenario fighters like the FW190 D9, D11 or the Messerschmitt Me 109 K4 were far more succesful.

The word 'ultimate' was put under inverted commas because many think it was but after a more detailed analysis, this designation becomes a bit questionable.

Of course 109K and 190D were far more successful; they started service already in autumn 1944. From a strategic standpoint, Ta-152 didn't make any sense, especially that late in the war. 109K and 190D were slight modifications of existing aircraft, thus there was no setback in production. And 109K was fast and could operate at altitude. Ta-152 was essentially a new design that only looked similar to its predecessor. But man was she an absolute beauty !

At this stage of WW2, saying any Luftwaffe fighter of any type was “successful”, is to place immense strain on that term. Outside of the 262, the Allied fighters outclassed them technically, had the edge in aircrew experience /skill and completely outnumbered them.

@@leakycheese That's only partially true. Technically, both sides were equal with 109K and 190D. Heck, 109K was the fastest single piston engine around - at certain altitudes. Yes, I didn't count Ta-152 - a dozen aircraft in March 45 make no difference. The lack of pilot training and the lack of well trained pilots together with the numerical disadvantage really mattered. That's not even considering fuel.

Bonsoir Jeanne. Vu l'état de l'industrie allemand dans les derniers mois de guerre, c'est quand même pas mal, même si c'était de la fabrication "underground". Si la qualité des matériaux avait été meilleur, ça aurait marche. Néanmoins il est plus fiable que le Me 262, car ce dernier appartenait à la première génération de jet. @@dominiqueroudier9401 Bonjour, oui effectivement chaque modèle d'avion allemand sortant en fin de guerre était un modèle unique avec ses propres problèmes. Les options n'étant plus respectées et les matériaux manquaient à la fin 44. Quant au ME-262, là, c'était les gros problèmes étant donné le niveau technologique. Par contre le TA-152 avec ses grandes ailes devait avoir perdu son taux de roulis prodigieux qu'avait les premiers FW-190.

@@jeannezehner9450 Salut Jeanne. Déjà on est à 1700 vues en 24h, c'est excellent. Après fouiller mes archives, le Ta152H était la suite logique du D9 et D13. Le moteur était le même, même cylindrée. La différence était le compresseur pour haut altitude et les 2 boosters qu étaient le le MW50: injection eau methanol pour décollage et surpuissance moyen altitude : de 1750 hp on passe à 2200hp. Haute altitude pour combler manque oxygène le GM1. Protoxyde azote pour gaver en oxygène. Mais seulement 1500hp à 12000 mètres. Mais 780 km/h. . Maintenant on attend le 3ème. J'aurais sûrement avant première jeudi 18. D'après le livre, les Yak9 n'avaient aucune chance et le combat était à moyen altitude

@@dominiqueroudier9401 Le cockpit devait être pressurisé pour la haute altitude comme sur le SPITFIRE VIII. 780 KM/H parce qu'il n'y a pas beaucoup de trainée avec la raréfaction de l'air, mais c'est une belle prouesse technique pour l'époque avec un avion à hélice. L'injection eau méthanol était sur tous les modèles de chasseur allemand. Le compresseur, c'était le nœud du problème. Mais quand il est lancé à haut régime qu'il soit à basse ou à moyenne altitude avec son armement lourd il fait mal.

Ofw Willi Reschke was at RAE Farnborough with his Ta152 for evaluation at the wars end, with Capt Eric Brown. Reschke was convinced of the Ta’s superiority, and his ‘life insurance,’ as it turned out to be. A USAF Mustang ace recalled he had two opportunities to fly a Ta 152 H at the same time against a Mustang in mock combat. On both occasions he found it easy to finish up on the Mustang’s tail.

Good commentary and nice effects, could fool many casual viewers into thinking they were real footage (that's a compliment). I chuckled when you said Reschke "swore heavily" - that was putting it mildly! IIRC, he said he "can no longer remember just who and what I didn't curse" in that moment 🤣 Pity the fight involved 152Hs - well, they were the only variant that went into production after all. If it was a 152C with its 1x 30mm and 4 x 20mm cannon the 1st burst might have turned the Tempest into matchsticks already :P

...well done video. Willi Reschke gave a burst on O. Mitchell s Tempest - and he did a belly landing. After this mission Reschke drove to Mitchell s crash site - Mitchell s body was still sitting in the Tempest - in fuselage were many holes...

Thanks! Due to the game limitation, it was kinda hard to reenact this part accurately since airplanes in WT generally explode if they hit the ground. Some descriptions say it was a high speed stall.

Like the video said it's possible he missed seeing the attacker/seeing the attck. His report was much later but the Kiwi Pilot reported it immediately after battle so I'd believe the Kiwi over the German.

@@SoloRenegade Not quite, it was still very fast at low altitude (580 km/h), and could outturn basically any allied fighter safe maybe the Spitfire thanks to those super high AR wings which steepen & heightens the CL curve whilst significantly lowering the Cdi.

@@SoloRenegade I didn't say the Spit was the fastest?? Speed isn't the only measure of a fighter aircraft you know. What I said was that the Ta152H also had great performance at low altitude and crucially was also extremely nimble, in which area only really the Spitfire could match it. Speed wise there were quite a few other WW2 fighters that were faster a low altitude, but not by a whole lot.

Amazing video ! Neustadt-Glewe , 14. April 1945 Ofw.Willi Reschke, Ofw. Sepp Sattler and Oberstlt. Auffhammer flew a mission on afternoon. 3 Ta 152 H approached rail way Ludwingslust. Reschke flew behind Sattler. Suddenly Satttlers Ta 152 H went down ... no one attacked him !!! Is was probably a technical problem...!

I've never tried it as I'm not too keen on the "pay to play" type of games. How many of the planes have cockpits now. Are there "full real" servers with no external views, no HUD, etc?@@showtime112

An interesting comparison. However, not the best one to make in assessing the Ta152’s combat capabilities. The Tempest was certainly one of the fastest at low-level, but it was also large & heavy and not the most agile Allied fighter. The contemporary Spitfire Mk.XIV, for instance, out-climbed and out-turned it. That would have been an epic encounter…

Didn't know that. I believe 'Dora' only referred to Fw-190D in reality. There will be a video about Ta-152 on the 'Eastern Front' (which at the time was at a stone throw from the 'Western Front').

​@@showtime112 The 152 was also used against the B-17s with some regularity. Pilots talking about getting close to the sound barrier as they dove through the formations and then executing high-G pull outs with the half-spar outer wing panels 'flapping like bird wings' but the aircraft holding together as they literally flew return passes, almost vertically upwards at 500 mph. Apparently, with both the MW-50 and GM-1, when they were actually hooked up, they gave the '2,000hp class' Jumo-213E/F almost 2,500hp in emergency boost with both blower stages running. On delivery from Alteno, they took the fighters up to altitude for a speed run back to Luchau and one of the flight officers did the math and figured out the flight's ground speed, at height, was 505mph. When Kurt Tank had 'places to be', managing his companies roll in the dying aero industry he liked to take his cherry red Ta-152 to get there promptly and, once upon a takeoff, heard the dreaded 'Achtung! Achtung! Indianer Am Gartenzaum!' over the radio as he exited Rechlin. Looking over his shoulder, he saw a pair of P-51Ds coming down from altitude out of an offset orbit, already well above 450mph. Gear still coming up, he engaged the booster tanks, kicked the turbo into third gear range and pulled back on the stick. The Mustangs were left behind by a fighter which climbed like a U-2. Straight Up. Unable to find the highway bases, the Allies really liked to bounce the few Luftwaffe fighters still flying out of their home fields but quickly discovered the Ta-152, again because of all that power and those sail plane wings could do double chandelle turns within the airfield boundaries climbing and reversing onto their sixes in a 'butterfly' maneuver which they could not match. And so they quickly stopped trying to turn with the Tank (I'm sure local flak greatly assisted the learning curve). In the last major B-17 raid on Berlin, (the one where the Germans also fired the first SAMs, ever) several fighter wings put up a valiant effort and got severely mauled for their attempt. ONLY the Ta-152s came back without any damage. Ironically, when they received their Hohenjaegers, the Black Men of the Jagd Stab found that many they were completely unready for service release as everything from hydraulic tubing (the 152 was a hydraulic bird, the 190 an electric one on things like landing gear and flaps) to pressurization of the cockpit to even such basic things as control balancing all had to be either disconnected for want of spare parts or taken off the airframe for the metal benders to remil and tighten tolerances/throws before fitting again. Unfortunately, this included the booster tanks which, when filled to capacity, caused the CG of the airframe to be wildly out of skew and made the aircraft dangerously unstable. This caused the GM-1 of the H-0s to be pulled from the airframes of the H-1s and led to the MW-50 tanks being reduced in capacity. Or maybe half filled, I don't recall which. Excellent book on the Ta-152 was the Monogram Close Up #24. Written back in the 1960s-70s time frame, still one of the best technical histories and artwork books on the Ta-152 ever written about the type. Unlike the Me-262, the Ta-152H series was completely comfortable fighting at sea level or 40,000 feet and while the Ta-152C was the better overall fighter for rate fighting other fighters and medium bombers in the 5-12,000ft altitude bands of the last six months of the war (faster, better DB-603G engine and wings and intended to have four or five of the new MG-213 cannons plus EZ-42 gyro sight); it was the Hohenjager that could fight at and above the midwar B-17 heights of 20-25,000ft, with ease. If we had sent Dominators or Super Fortresses over Germany, with Atom Bombs, in late 1945, it would have been the only aircraft that could reliably intercept them. At light weights, only the 109K could outclimb it to 20,000ft and nothing could beat it to 30,000ft. It probably would have also become a notable photorecce aircraft in time. Kurt Tank's last best effort was a- Total. Rocket. Ship. Probably the closest thing to the F-22 of WWII. Only the P-47M and P-80 were even close.

The Fw 190 A, B and C models had BMW radial engines. The Dora had Junkers Jumo V12 engines which were longer so it became known as the long nose. It was not quite as maneuverable as the C model but had better high altitude performance. TheTa152 had the same engine as the Dora, but with superchargers adapted for even higher altitudes. The Germans were expecting B 29s. The biggest visible difference is the longer wing and slightly longer fuselage.

The notable Eric "Winkle" Brown flew the TA 152 in 1945 and had the opinion that it was on par with any Allied piston-engined fighter, improved steadily over 30,000 feet, and was clearly superior over 35,000 feet. He described it as "an aerodynamic beauty" but arriving too late to meet its potential. His opinion of the Tempest was that is was "not a perfect aeroplane perhaps, but certainly a very good one indeed." but poor at high altitude and with a very sharp stall that occurred without any warning. During high mach test diving he noted that "It is truly surprising the strength you find when survival is a stake".

Accounts do back up the content of the video to a degree, however the Tempest was a very formidable opponent finishing the war on a 6:1 single seat fighter kill ratio. The famous quote from a Me262 pilot went something along the lines of "the Me262's most dangerous opponent was tbe British Hawker Tempest, very fast at low level and very manouverable". Looking at turning rates the Tempest was on a par with the Me109 and Fw190 and importantly the Dora9 so make your own conclusions. The Tempest pilot probably thought he had the edge and if the turn rate of the 152 is correct then tactics would quickly have evolved to counter it. Very interesting aircraft with a couple captured after the war for evaluation. As with all things German, yet another case of to little to late, with Germany losing the war in the factorys, still chasing technological excellence over sheer production.

My father-in-law was a ta152 pilot. He said “the TA 152 was almost my guarantee of survival” And it also said the Tempest was overrated and easy to shoot down. The Spitfire was a better aircraft. -/- Mein Schwiegervater war ta152 Pilot. Er sagte „die TA 152 war fast meine garantie zu überleben“ Und es sagte auch die Tempest war überbewertet und leicht abzuschießen. Die Spitfire war ein besseres Flugzeug.

Sources are not exactly perfectly clear about that. Some suggest it was. In any case, it was heavily based on the Fw-190 and developed from it.

An extremely competent, commendable series on the Ta-152. As soon as I observed this beautiful aircraft's wing planform from above, it was obvious, to me, that this was the true high altitude intereptor Germany had desperately needed for so long! Those long, almost sensuous wings, and the slimmer body, eclipsing the beauty even of it's origins! The wings, immediately reminiscent of that quintessential "glider" near space, the near imminent U-2! Hmm! That style of lengthy wing is always a hallmark of a high altitude player. I am only wondering why Hitler hadn't put bombs on it yet! I may be tRICKy, but I do recognise quality effort with your videos, well executed, & well done you, for these especially!

Most German pilots by that time were experienced, as the best had to keep on fighting and had no one to take over. And the Ta152 was the best fighter of the war, even acknowledged by the English. Sadly for the Germans they neither had fuel nor pilots to fly them at this time. And emergency programs like the "Volksjaeger" (Peoples Fighter) Heinkel 162 jet was too little and too late, if the bad quality wood glue managed to keep the planes flying! Pilot Eric Browne did find it excellent though, when testing one after the war!

Good coverage. A draw at best? I am not sure about that. There is no existing corresponding claim for Sattler’s Ta 152 which makes the likelihood of a fatal accident or flaw a more likely scenario. The Ta 152H dogfighting down low is not a one off a event. Reschke downed two nimble Yak 9s as well.

There is a claim. W/O Shaw claimed shooting down an 'Fw-190' but this was very likely Sattler who was alone trying to find the rest of his flight which had taken off before him. After uploading the video, it seemed that I probably didn't make that connection strongly enough.

In my opinion still sketchy at best. Would a pilot really confuse a Fw 190 a well known plane by then with the size and wingspan of a Ta 152? I would think the Ta 152 would be judged as a new type automatically in the air. Its not impossible but I have trouble with stating that the British shot him down with any certainty . Reschke’s account is reliable and he and others state that no one saw anyone shoot him down. So calling it draw is unsubstantiated in my opinion. Again good work though!

The Hawker Tempest did indeed have Four 20 mm Hispano Cannons powered by napier sabre 2,180 engine, its siblings were the Hawker fury with a different engine the Rolls Royce ''Kestrel',' and the Hawker sea fury being a navalised aircraft with folding wings and a Centaurus Radial engine instead, consider the best and most capable piston aircraft ever built by the british, and for Royal Navy fleet air arm at the time, the only piston aircraft to shoot down a russian Mig 15 jet fighter in korea i believe.

The US evaluation pilots reported the Tempest to be far more manueverable than the P47 at low & medium altitudes unsurprisingly, & on a par with the P51 again at low to medium altitudes & slightly behind higher up. You need to remember only a few hundred Tempests saw action in WW2 compared to the huge numbers of other allied fighters so you won’t see the kill figures like those. I’ll see if I can find the US evaluation report & link it on here👍

@@chogs1That's interesting from a American perspective on British WW2 aircraft, however I wasn't refering to the operational History of the Hawker Tempest which was late operational in the war , I merely commented on a query whether the Tempest was armed with 303 browning machine guns or 20 mm cannons the latter being the correct answer , on the subject of the Tempest or Rather the Hawker Typhoon theses a restoration taking place here in the. UK on a Hawker Typhoon complete with the Napier Sabre engine hopefully it with be talking to the air once again a very rare example of a British fighter bomber, I believe there is a similar project taking place in Canada that would just be Two flying examples in existence in the world

According to D9 pilot Willi Heilmann's excellent account in his book Alert in the West it was the Tempest and by deduction Griffon Spit that they feared most. The Tbolt seemed to be easy prey and the Me109 was considered a flying coffin for it's unfortunate pilots.

Well, it was certainly optimized for high altitude. But, Willi Reschke writes in one of those 'old paper things' that he could easily stay behind a Tempest. So I guess it wasn't that bad.

Wrong, it's not the same thing. 'Ta' is the first two letters of the designer's name , Tank (pronounced 'Tunk' in German, NOT as in 'Main Battle Tank'. Likewise, Yak-1 is not pronounced 'Y.A.K. one' because it comes from Yakovlev, the designer. Fw comes from two words, 'Focke-Wulf' and that's why it is pronounced 'F.W.'
