I'm a Special Ed teacher from India. When I was looking at programs to get my teaching degree no one in my country knew what SpecEd was other than moderate to severe disabilities (down syndrome, FAS, CP, etc). No one knew what learning disabilities, autism, adhd, etc was within school systems, and I ended up doing my teacher prep in the US. This was in 2016, so that should give you a good idea of how new SpecEd in India is and how accurately the film portrayed the teachers' and parents' reactions to Ishaan. There's an incredible amount of stigma attached to it and those who are SpecEd teachers back home have their work cut out for them when it comes to demystification and psychoeducation.

This is my story. Till 3rd Grade in Mumbai, I had problems reading. I failed 2nd Grade. I was called stupid, idiot, duffer...my father used to belt me all the time. I My elder brother and my younger brother were both toppers. Winning prizes every year....I used to try and study harder than everyone and yet fail. The others would barely study and top. I met a fantastic teacher whose name was Felix (that was his real name). He started teaching me mathematics....explained that everything is a puzzle...to focus and see patterns...break it up into predicates and then form an argument why it leads to a specific conclusion. I topped in only one thing in school - painting, drawing and crafts. But ultimately I became very interested in Mathematics and actually in Grade 10mwas studying Calculus, Surds, Complex numbers and Algebra...ended up doing my Bachelors and Masters in Electrical engineering and went to USA. I was lucky to meet Felix. In India people have no idea what Dyslexia is (and in my case ADHD).

I was thrown on the class floor because I never completed my Math Homework, spanked to death because I didn't know that 5-3=2; years later in ICSE U.P. I was the only student who opted out of Math while the rest were preparing like they were already in IIT. Topped in the humanities stream but that never was 'Good enough'. That dream depicted Ishaan's "Separation anxiety" from his mother. It's not like his mother wouldn't have jumped off the train for him.. Its just that it was dream...where Ishaan is imagining himself to be stuck in a crowd and separated by his mother, whom he loves the most. It described his trauma regarding going to Boarding school as a punishment. It was a Symbolic dream of a 9 year old child...where adult logic has no place.

Yes Josh, here in India as you might know the schools are pretty strict with the discipline and neatness. Clean shoes, tucked in shirt ,tied hair (for girls) and hair with oil ,clipped nails, No nail polishes etc are compulsory things. Yes that's strict but best thing in Indian schools I think. Helps you focus more on studies and less distractions in teenage years where you are tend to get distracted.

@@RayneArt For me i think uniforms are great since it doesnt allow for bullying of kids over the clothes they wear or how they keep their hair. Its a good learning environment but all the other things in indian schools render this one good point useless.
@RayneArt5 ай бұрын
@@sparkyblue7016 uniforms can absolutely lead to bullying. Kids from poor backgrounds can have torn uniforms, uniforms with stains that parents can't afford to replace, old hand-me-downs from siblings. Kids still can and do wear their hair in different ways. Schools shouldn't be militarized to try and jam kids in boxes. It's good to allow kids to express individuality.

Its not that common for couples to kiss before leaving for work or leaving in general. Also don’t know about current school teaching system, but our generation and the generations before us didn’t have teachers who could understand what dyslexic people are and hence such a treatment. This movie was made to educate both parents and teachers about dyslexia and that’s why people love this movie. Its a harsh reality of how parents and people in general are not aware of these things.
