With sights set on tackling youth unemployment in Ethiopia, the Livestock Compact of Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT), deployed sheep fattening technologies in Bonga, Doyogena in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples region (SNNPR) and Menz in the Amhara region. In partnership with the International Centre for Agricultural Research the Dry Areas (ICARDA) The TAAT Livestock successfully provided resources, Good Agricultural Practise trainings and technical backstopping to youths who were hitherto left out technology dissemination efforts.
The compact’s sheep fattening intervention created youth and women sheep fattening groups helping to kick-start interventions by providing one free ram to youth and women.
Subsequent to the provision of a free ram, farmers were trained on ensuring good health of rams, sheep fattening, youth entrepreneurship business skills as well as the provision of plastic feeding and watering containers for the animals. All these were achieved in collaboration with the National Agricultural Research Centres in Bonga and Doyogena.
