Tabac - The Daily Shave

Tabac or not Tabac, that is the question. Matt here with another another Daily Shave and vintage razor video. Today I’m using Tabac, and it’s not even Tuesday.
The Soap: Tabac by Maurer and Wirtz, who have been making Tabac since 1959 in Germany, and making soaps since the 1840’s. The scent is a potent 9/10 strength masculine powdery fresh tobacco barbershop scent. If you go to the forums, Tabac is universally praised for its performance. It produces a wonderful dense, creamy, slick lather that feels like it imparts a layer of oil to your face. It is known as a “love it or hate it” type scent that has wetshavers drawing lines and taking sides. I am firmly in camp Tabac. There is nothing else out there like it.
The Brush: Semogue OC in cherry. The small 24 mm knot has bloomed into a pillow-soft enormous fan after breaking in that gives up the lather easily.
The Razor: Vintage 1950’s Henckels Friodur full hollow round point 13/16 straight razor. Smooth shaver that holds a keen edge for a long time. Good Solingen steel.
Aftershave: Tabac aftershave lotion. The scent projects for about an hour but lasts the workday close to the skin. It has the same scent as the soap.
Tip of the Day: Moisturizer before alcohol splash for irritation/burn-free post shave experience.

My Goodness your Straight Razor skills are amazing. Never seen anyone that proficient with that type of razor. I love the performance of Tabac. I can't think of any other soap that performs this good, and iv'e tried a lot over the years. The Tabac Cologne is top notch too. Finish with a non scented moisturiser after, and your ready for anything. Stevie in Scotland.

I now have their cream in a tube, their shave stick, the aftershave lotion / splash and their aftershave balm. Didn't like the aftershave the very first time I bought it.... But now... Absolutely love all that I have that is Tabac.... Grows on ya! Thanks for the video!

Excellent nonchalant tip on the load stroke method for boars. The application stroke demonstrated helps reinforce this preventive action. Nice job! (The lateral loading also helps to keep those li'l soapmallows from flying away!)

As a 2nd generation barber from the infamous 8 mile road in Detroit Michigan. All of the old barbers used Tabac because of its performance. But the old barbers said that the soap smells like old lady draws. I would not know because I have not lived long enough to smell old lady draws. Lol

Hmmm. This is a tough one. My favorites are always changing. Top soap base for me is Wholly Kaw Siero. Favorite scent right now is probably 322 by Catie’s Bubbles (luxury cream base is also top notch). And favorite budget /mass market soap/cream would be Proraso Green. My favorite razors (also very hard to pick) are 1. 8/8 koraat full bellied hollow ground it is a work of art 2. 1st gen 1950’s Filarmonica #13 (6/8) Taurino Medallon, and 3. 1820s Greaves Sheffield Wedge. If u mean DE blades : 1. Wizamet 2. Dorco prime platinum 3. Permasharp. But I do t think there are blades that work for everyone- everybody has different tastes - try as many as you can and you will find what works best for you

Your straight razor skills are fantastic. Probably needed.. we can hear how thick your hair is. One friendly tip for the after shave situation... right on the NO alcohol product directly on the skin after the shave... try and use witch hazel after you finish shaving and rinsing your face with cold water. Just ordered some Tabac aftershave balm... looking forward to trying that.

Tabac!! The performance is beyond reproach, but the scent... Well, I tolerate it but I can't say I really like it. But sometimes it hits the nose just right. Great intro. To Tabac or not to Tabac is a question I will ponder 'till morning!

Great shave and review. It is that exact controversy that kept me from purchasing the Tabac but on December 26 I shall shave with it and bathe my mug with it's after shave! Love the razor, do you hone?

I hone enough to get by. . Not a honemeister, but I can maintain a sharp smooth edge with a Belgian coticule. Setting a bevel or restoring a beat up vintage razor is hit or miss for me . But when I get a razor shave ready from a pro, I will be able to maintain the edge

I think performance is on par with TOBS, but I prefer Proraso for me for some reason the nostalgia of Proraso really resonates

I like the Reuzel Green (Oil based) pommade which smells of green apple and mint. And sometimes use Crew fiber. They both are good at taming the ‘do

I just ordered by first puck and bowl of Tabac…finger’s crossed. I notice some people who brush in the lather for a long time. Besides softening is there a reason for this? I am in awe of the straight razor shave. Can’t do it. I’m a DE guys.

Tabac is a nice scent however I ended up giving my cologne bottle to my father in law. It is a potent fragrance and was a bit to overwhelming.
