honestly that just gave me the confidence to use my straight for the first time. it has been shave ready but I haven't used it yet. now I will. thanks!

Can attest to shavettes being unforgiving. Its the corners of the blade that stick out (which a straight razor does not have) that can really bite you if you apply pressure in the wrong way! I'll just have to practice more.

As someone who is considering starting straight shaving, I found this really informative!

I just ordered a shavette from WCS, I own 6 DE razors, but have always been afraid to try bare naked straight razors! Can't wait to try this out after watching several vids. I went with a shavette because I'm not sure if I want to get into buying honing and stropping gear if I don't like straight razor shaving.

This is very helpful. I just picked up a shavette from the store and used it for the first time this morning. The video will help me be less awkward. I love how Jared jumped right in using the straight. That is inspiring.

I thought that was good for the first time.. It took me a while to learn to follow the contour of my face between the side and neck area; that just took practice.. The second pass against the grain is when I got a really close shave, closer than I've ever gotten with a safety razor or cartridge.. Straight shaving is an experience which is hard to understand until it is actually done. I feel very relaxed and satisfied after a nice straight shave. Good show, guys.

I use a Feather SS (kamisori grip) to shave my neck and line up my cheeks (I wear a beard), but this has inspired me to start saving my pennies to buy a real kamisori. Thanks!

Kamisoris are really under appreciated. Not that much different than a straight. The different grind isn’t difficult to learn how to get down.

Fully agree with you about the straight razors with the replaceable blades, they are really harsh. I also find them far too light. Have any of you tried the Japanese style fixed blade straight razors? I made myself one a few years back with carbon steel, but it got rusty after a few minutes of being damp, so by the end of a shave it was already showing rust spots. Wrong steel. I find a short but quite heavy flat grind blade the nicest though they can be a pain to keep sharp. Must get some nice 52100 steel and make another rather than using W2 again.

I agree completely with the safety razor experience before moving to a straight razor or shavette. A light touch is imperative to develope, or else consequences.

Man i cant do that without looking in the mirror . And really afraid too. Just looking in the mirror i at least cut myself ounce.

Recently I switched from a safety razor to a straight razor and was slightly disappointed by the results. While I enjoy the almost meditative process of using a straight razor I found that the shave was not nearly as clean as what I get with a safety razor. I imagine part of this is due do the fact that I make a second pass going against the grain. However even when I tested just doing a single pass with each I still found that the safety razor gave a closer shave. While the remaining hair isn’t visible unless you’re looking for it when I run my hand over the area against the grain it feels like sandpaper. Any tips or advice to get a better quality shave with a straight razor?

hey there. We have found that one you have about 30+ shaves, your technique begins to significantly improve. Also, watch other Straight razor shavers on youtube (look up matt on our daily shave playlist).
