The second inn on our trip to Niigata Prefecture is Rankeiso in Sanjo City. A member of the Japan Association for Secluded Hot Spring Protection, the three-story wooden Ryokufukan building is designated as a national tangible cultural property. The hot spring is one of Japan's richest, most concentrated, strong salt mineral hot springs, which can be called medicinal hot water. In addition to the large public bath and open-air bath, which can be used at any time except during cleaning hours, there are two private baths with different atmospheres that can be used free of charge from 16:00 to 22:00. The view of the mountain stream while bathing in the baths was fantastic. We had both breakfast and dinner in a private room, and the standard kaiseki meals were very tasty and based on locally produced, locally consumed foods from the mountains.
