Great video. I especially liked the idea of using the Clover awl (or stiletto) to pick at the seams to pull it out a bit. That's a really great idea and much better than a straight pin.

great idea. questions. 1) how big are the little squares? 2)what stitch did you use on the cup edges? 3) what glue did you use the stick the mug down? thank you.

She used a straight stitch using a black thread and she sewed over the stitched area forward and backward several times in different areas to add width and thickness. There is a fabric glue stick by Dritz. You can play with sizes of the squares and decide on a size that you like. Possibly 2.5 inch squares or 3.5 inch squares. The size with the coffee cup will depend on the finished depth of the squares and possibly 4 - 5 inches of the solid white plus the seam allowance. Draw your finished size on paper and then go from there. The mug rug is a lovely idea. You can do what you feel is a nice size for under the cup with a little room left over.
