I wanted to see how much of an overhang there should be of a runner on a banquet table, but all of them in this four minute video were hidden by chairs. Having a heck of a time figuring this out...

I don't think there are hard rules on table runner drops, but from a stylistic perspective, we would use a drop of around 30cm / 1 ft at each end. Other factors might be: Is there a chair at the end of the table where the runner drops? If so then the 30cm drop is enough otherwise there is too much runner in the person's lap. If the drop is 'on show', say at the end of a top table, then the drop is subjective. If the table is clothed fully i.e. boxed in including at the sides to the floor, then the drop could be 30cm, half the table hight, or even close to the floor. In all situations it would not be recommended for the runner to drop more than the table cloth. A table runner is not a substitute for a table cloth! If the table is not clothed, then I would not have a drop more than 30cm. Don't forget symmetry. The runner needs to be pulled straight, with no rucks or wrinkles. The drop needs to be the same at each end. If the runner is aligned with the front edge of a top table (instead of down the centre of it) then make sure it is aligned with that edge and not wavy. It's these details that catch people's eyes. They will appreciate your clear attention to detail.

A 90 inch cloth on a 60 inch / 5ft table will have a drop of about 15 inches. This should be enough to reach the chair seats, but not floor length. Ideally your runner should be more than 60 so it has some drop. I think a runner that's up to 90 would work. If you can get a 90 inch runner then it should align with the tablecloth. A 72 inch runner (6 ft) would give about 6 inch drop, a bit less than half the drop of the tablecloth but may be fine, and if by being shorter it saves you money then it may be worth a look. Beau Events standard length runners are 2.6m / 102 inch which works great for 6ft tables. We make shorter and longer runners to order. But most venues we deal with would cloth a table to floor length, so even a 5ft table is about 120 inches from floor across to table to floor again. It's a subjective area, so do what looks right to you and have fun.
