Looks like a good solution. I was thinking of something similar using a variable speed angle grinder. I need to sharpen other tools as well. May be just as easy to use the table saw...except for not being variable speed. I will need a finer grit for planes and chisels, etc.. I watched this one fellow on KZbin sharpen all his blades as rip cutters, 90 degrees. I don't think he quite understands lol

People also forget....clean the blade before trying to sharpen. A lot of times it's just got residue on it and works fine after a clean

Camera stabilization might be the problem. Try turning it off. If the problem persists, you may want to turn the autofocus off also. Your videos are very well made and innovative your jigs and techniques make sense to me. I'll be trying them, especially the chisel sharpening jig. I agree with the comments about cleaning the blade first. Thanks for your videos!

Great idea. I wanna try this too. But next time try to clean the blade first. Most of the burnings are from the resin and dust on the teeth. Many times the blade isn`t dull but only dirty. Same for router-bits, drill-bits, planer/thicknesser-blades and every other cutting tool. I use oven-cleaner or aceton and a toothbrush to clean my tools. But especial on routerbits with bearings: remove te bearings first. They don't like de degreasing-effect of the cleaner. And after the cleaning, rub the tools with oil or anying other product to keep the rust away. I use "Silbergleit" its a dry grease for woodworking tools, but I don't know if its available outside of germany.

Awesome technique to sharpen, but blades don’t burn when their dull, they chip out. Blades burn from being dirty with resin, if you clean them regularly you will extend the time before sharpening.

My dad sharpened saw blades on the side growing up, and this method is the same as he used, just with a tablesaw instead of a grinder. That said, I wouldn't bother sharpening most carbide blades these days, as they are cheaper than the time and effort it takes. Still, pretty ingenious of you! He also attached new teeth to blades that either lost them, or where the were damaged.

Two questions: (1) Do you think it would be helpful to clean the blade before sharpening? (2) Do you think it would be safe to sharpen every other tooth from the front of the saw, as you have done, and, leaving the blade set at the original right-leaning angle, sharpen the rest of the teeth from the back of the saw? This looks like a very effective way to sharpen a saw blade. Well done. Thank you!

One problem I noted was your use of white letters on a very light background which makes it difficult for people with poor vision to see. I have had cataract surgery but still need glasses because of my astigmatism, which makes it difficult for me to see that. Also, using a 150 grit blade to sharpen carbide is really way to coarse. It is okay to start with, but then use a 250 or 300 grit blade then go to a 800 grit blade. I can say this with confidence since I owned a sharpening business years ago.

Really ingenious setup. Very resourceful. I notice there's no indexing stop for the blade rotation. How do you consistent grind into the tooth face. The teeth have an angled back, so the more you grind into them tangentially the shorter they get. Effectively, only the tallest teeth will be cutting. Am I seeing this wrong? Not trying to troll. I love your stuff. Just wondered if I'm missing something.
@Martin1519
@Martin1519 3 жыл бұрын
Does your camera have a stabilization feature? I’m thinking if it does, then the vibrations coming from the table saw could be affecting it. These types of cameras tend to have the lense on its own internal gimbal like mechanism. So the vibrations are causing the lense to move like that.

Change of color is most likely due to the melting of the resin on the dirty blade. If it was getting hot enough to affect the metal it would have smoked the resin off first... Clean the blade regularly, avoids lots of sharpening. And clean before sharpening to see what you do during sharpening!

Why don't you just remove the riving knife and come in from the other side for the alternating teeth? I would also think the sharpening was held a bit longer than necessary. It's hard to tell to from the video just seems a bit heavy handed. Because of how long the tooth were held, you may want a gauge to see if the teeth are all protruding at the same height eventhough ATB is less of an issue.

Al. ll of you guys demo'ing saw blade sharpening use the same misleading proof that the blade is dull before sharpening and proof that the sharpening worked. First off you show that the blade is dull by making a cut in a wood that burns easily. The problem is that you make the demo cut before cleaning the blade so in fact the pitch and tar on the blade may be the thing that is making the wood burn. The blade may actually be dull but it may only be dirty and cleaning may fix it. Then you sharpen the clean blade and make that same cut and claim that shows it is now Sharpe because it di not burn the wood but in fact you did not show anything since the clean blade might not have burned the wood before you sharpened it. If this was the first sharpening the blade might actually have been sharper before you "sharpened" it.
