impressive chopper. this match indeed showed long pimple has its place in table tennis. using inverted on forehand for offensive n attack. modern defensive player is actually more tactical and fluid to counter full offensive player as long as they overcome all the topspin rally with speedy reflexes,

If Chen Weixing had developed an attacking backhand he would have been top 10 for years. His forehand was always world class.

He is in my opinion the second best defender behind joo se hyuk, what he lacked was a little consistency and chopping ball placement

Joo Se Hyuk is a great athlete, very lithe and flexible. The way he defends with his forehand, turning to his right and taking the balls while they are very low, is something other defenders can't do very well. Chen Weixing often comes over the ball with his forehand. Gionis Panagiotis is another good defender.

just asking as a general question: what's the advantage of using long pips to defend? it seems like the asian guy is pummeled most points against his defensive backhand chop

gotcha9350 No. The inverse of topspin is backspin, which means that balls are returned with backspin. The more backspin on the chop, the more the attacker has to add topspin. The cycle continues with increasing spin and tires the attacker out. Also because long pips aren't heavily affected by the spin of the incoming ball, chops are more stable and it's easier for the chopper to return powerful and spinny loops.

Very late reply, but long pips are much more flexible than short pips, which means the ball has more contact time. Therefore if you chop topspins with long pips you get much more spin in the ball.

@@charlysumeleh5206 Why? Pips-out were around LONG before inverted rubbers. Take a look at some modern defenders (Manika Batra, India) a LP and inverted modern defender...or Mattias Falk (SP & inverted) who took Silver in the Liebherr 2019 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships. Maybe you hate LP & SP because you don't play well against them....
