He is the one who knows the most how to play against chopper.

Sigh. He was a chopper destroyer. Syed was a really good player, so were Li Gun Sang and (the first) Wang Hao, but the way he could alternate soft and hard shots and keep them on a string was simply too good. And there are plenty of videos of him doing it to attacking players too - probably the 1994 Euros against Primorac is my favourite. It saddens me that this style of play is now impossible. Ma Lin was maybe the last who could do it - not as well in my opinion. Can you imagine Kenta trying it against Ma Long or FZD? Thanks a lot ITTF.

What is different now then it was back then? what did they change?

I think a bigger ball has more momentum and makes it harder to cushion it sufficiently. Also maybe the rubbers - and I don't blame the ITTF for this - have simply got too elastic. These things make drop shots very risky now, because someone like ML or FZD will just come in and hit it past you. Karakasevic is notable for still playing lots of drop shots, but these days I suspect - at least in the ITTF tournaments I can watch - he loses most of the points where he plays one. Power is everything these days.
