The wording should be, "you have 25% of your shift left until you can clock out." Then 12 AM is correct. As usual, your wording is confusing. If you're going to describe a problem in terms of English and then translate it into mathematics, the English must be at least as precise as the mathematics, or you will get multiple interpretations.

@@katecoe8322Agreed. I can't fault his dedication to mathematics instruction, despite his overuse of PEMDAS (I mean, really...). But, as we were taught in engineering school, no calculation can be any more precise than its least precise term. This is also true when imprecise language is used to describe a problem that must be translated into a mathematical model.

You start an 8 hour shift at 6pm. You would get of work at 2am, but you are working 25% MORE. 2 hours is 25% of 8 hours. So when you add 2 more hours you get off at 4am instead of 2am. Nothing was said about working 25% FASTER.

@katecoe8322 I've never heard of Maths, the shortened form of the word mathematics, being referred to as "math" until KZbin. - such an ugly sounding word. It's missing something. But then, many Americans cannot speak English, refusing to use adverbs properly and constantly devoting attention to redundant usage of the preposition "of" with phrasal adverbs, producing "off-of" as a word. Or cutting out the "ly" on words such as "quick", mixing the adjective with the adverb. Basic English knowledge.

Since you have 25% more time that's 1/4 of the 8 hours or 2 hours left. Therefore, you have only worked 6 hours thus far. Assuming you had no lunch break, the time would be midnight. Or, if you had a 1 hour lunch break, the time would be 1 a.m. Your communication skills are much better when you express it as a story problem, than when you write it out as a poorly expressed equation with more than 1 possible solution.. Now, I'll watch it and see if you've got some unexpected trickery you're planning to spring on us.

If you have 25% more to work before reaching 8 hours then 1.25x=8 thus 5x/4=8 thus x=32/5. 1/5 of an hour is 12 minutes, so x=6 hours and 24 minutes. Without taking a lunch break, the time would be 24 minutes past midnight. In other words, working an additional 25% over 6.4 hours will result in 8 hours worked. Working an additional 25% over 6 hours results in 7.5 hours worked.

I disagree with you. He is working an 8 hour shift, starting at 6:00 pm. If he starts at 6:00 pm. he would finish at 2:00 am. 25% of 8 equals 2 so take 2 hours off of 2:00 am. means it is 12:00 midnight. The other way to get to the same answer is, he has worked 75% of his shift or 6 hours. Add the 6 hours to his starting time of 6:00 pm. gives you midnight or 12:00 am.

Hi, I agree with the comments made. If you had simply said you " have 25%" to finish, then this is 2 hours, and the answer is 12am. However, 25%more is an additional 2 hours, or 2 hours more than 8. The jfi ishing time is therefore 4 am. However, I assume that as a good teacher, you were at pains to tell the students that they had only 25% left of the original 8 hours so as to clarify it for them. Additionally "Thier" , or the plural possessive is always spelt " their". The rhyme i" before e, except after c is not applicable here. Sorry about that. Otherwise, I felt your sum was a sensible example to use.

The math in this is not difficult. The most difficult aspect is the reading comprehension because the wording is unclear. These are those middle school math problems that ruined your math grades using English to create the difficulty. Reading comprehension is a needed skill in math but it should not be the main focus just as math is never the main focus in English class. I don't even know why you would go over the arithmetic aspect. Unless your target audience is young children there's no point. The math is so basic it's intuitive we're basically born being able to figure this out once our brains have developed to a certain point. Most people who answer incorrectly probably answer 4am thinking time is added to the shift when you say you have 25% more time to finish. And I would argue there's nothing wrong with that. The question in my opinion is not worded poorly it is flat out worded wrong. When you go to work you work and therefore any extra time to finish your work can only be time added to the shift. You could say there are lunch and bathroom breaks but who, who actually works as a dedicated employee uses up 25% of their time on the Jon or eating lunch. I would love to have two hours of my 8hr work shift slapping my dingdong. What job does this person have that they have to find a way to actually work. I need that job. It is probably the people who write these math problems because clearly they only get a few seconds of their day to get the job done and clearly they don't have a math education beyond first grade so they used writing to raise the difficulty level instead of actual math. But even so it's still wrong so maybe they didn't even go to school. In order to make this right you would have to assume that at jobs you can only manage to do your job 75% of the time at most. How the question is worded leave it open ended and you could only be working 1% of the time but some how mustered up the ability to work 25% more. There's a lot of assumptions behind actually "right". And you cannot expect anyone to assume in the way you expect. My English teacher taught me assumptions make an ASS out of U and ME, not percentages...
