Cross multiplying - keeping it equal - even good 'ol 'do what you do to one side to the other side'... these concepts are helpful when you simplify your 1st step solution.

Right out of the gate, the reciprocal needs to be taken to make the -2 exponent a positive 2. This makes 1/(2x^2y^-1)^2 which is 1/4x^4y^-2. Taking the reciprocal of the negative y exponent then leaves y^2/4x^4.

I got this right but I guessed at the sign of the base number 4 whether it was - or +. I was thinking that anytime you cross the fraction divider it changes the sign, but maybe just on exponents?

Greetings. It is glaringly obvious that the LHS does not equal RHS. The RHS should be 1 divided by (2X^2 times Y^-1)^2= 1 divided (4X^4 times Y^-2) and the result multiplied by Y^2/Y^2 to get the final answer of Y^2/4X^4. Lovely.

@heidimueller1039 Maybe because math is sequential and foundational in nature and has to be approached step by step as the previous step serves as a foundation or step to and for understanding the next higher step above it. You have the right idea. You must begin at the beginning, from the basics, from all the steps before this level, and work your way up to the this and next levels. The prerequisites give you a base of knowledge and understanding that helps you grasp and understand the ideas and concepts presented in the level above them. You can’t do fractions and decimals if you know nothing about multiplication and division. And that’s the whole simple idea! That’s how math is understood and done! That way, math is not that difficult at all, and is pretty smooth sailing when taking that course. People come on here out of the blue and without an understanding and foundational knowledge of the level of math prior to this level and expect that they’ll grasp things but get discouraged when they don’t simply because they fail to see and realize that they must first understand the levels of math prior to this one that gives them a knowledge and leads to and builds an understanding that enables them to understand what going on here. No need to be discouraged. It’s just a simple matter of preparing yourself for any level of math by simply understanding and thereby knowing the levels of math prerequisite and introductory to it that level ..gotta pluck a chicken and do some other prerequisites to em’ before you eat em’ ..if you’re like most people…..!

But how does this PROVE that y^2/4x^4 ≠ 2x^4y^2? I know that the two expressions don't LOOK equivalent, but does not looking right constitute "disproof"?
@ndailorw5079
@ndailorw5079 8 ай бұрын
A quick way is to substitute values for x and y. Immediately you see that on your left side of the equation the y^2 term in the numerator is divided by a term in the denominator that has a product of 4 times some value of x raised to the fourth power while the right side of the equation the y^2 term is multiplied by the product of 2x^4. Let x = 1 and y = 2, for an example. And whether x and y increase or decrease or both are equal you can see that the equation is not one of equality but rather one of inequality so that the two sides will never be equal. Which makes the original equation a false statement. Think of it like this, sort of speak, 4•3 ≠ 3/4 simply because the left side of the inequality increases while the left side decreases. So… with reference to the equation given here in this video, and never letting x equal 0, you can imagine that the left side will be greater than the right side whether x is greater than y or vice versa, or whether to the two variables are equal in numerical value. Now, that’s not a strict or a rigid mathematical proof, no doubt. But the common sense logic seems to hold up.

I think you have to distribute the exponent to everything. So I am getting 2^-2 * X^-4 *Y^2, which simplifies to y^2 over 4X^4. If I’m wrong, option B is 2X^-4y^2 which is 2y^2 over X^4 because you CAN NOT leave your answer with a negative exponent; as a number to a negative exponent MUST be simplified further. Now to see if any of my two answers were correct. I’m sticking with my first option. (y^2 / 4x^4)

The problem isn't what I thought. Andrewm624 pointed out that I made massive mistakes. First simplify it by distributing the -2 exponent. 2¯²x¯⁴y²=2x⁴y². Move negative exp to bottom. y²/(2²x⁴)=2x⁴y². Divide each side by 2y². . 2¯³=x⁸ Add now that I've redone it ... Can't 2¯³=x⁸ be equal?

Solution: There are 2 errors: 1. The 2 needs to be raised to the power of -2 as well, which would lead to 2⁻² = 1/2² = 1/4 2. The x² was raised to the power of 2 instead of -2, which would lead to (x²)⁻² = x⁻⁴ = 1/x⁴ The factor y² is correct. The result should be 2⁻²x⁻⁴y² or if you don't like negative exponents, you can write it as y²/(4x⁴) or even as (y/(2x²))²
