I solved this on my calculator. The order of operations, solving using algebra was: 5 enter, 2 enter, 3 divide, y**x RPN calculators rock! (RPN is Reverse Polish Notation or reverse Lukasiewicz notation.) RPN calculators have no "=" key.

You should also mention solving this by the method explained by Dvinever (below), using roots. That's also an intuitive way to solve it.

John, I always enjoy your vid’s. When I saw the problem, I knew that the answer had to be less than 5 because the exponent evaluates to less than 1. So as a check, if you get an answer greater that 5, you know that you got the wrong answer. Now if I was teaching math and my students got the right answer, I would give them a Piece Sign or puka bead necklace. I’m a Boomer. 😊😊

5^(2/3) is same as the cube root of 25. Something close to 2.9240177 and if you cube that (or multiply 2.924017...) by itself 3 times it makes 25. Something close to 2.9240177 × 2.9240177 × 2.9240177 = 25. Another way to say that is 5 to the power 2/3 is the same as the cube root of 5 squared (5 to the power of 2). If one reads the exponent fraction backwards they should get the radical index in this case 3 so cube root, then the numerator of the exponent fraction is the power to which the base number 5 is being raised. 5^(2/3) is the same as the cube root of 5^2 (or cube root of 25)

is that 5&2/3 or 5 to the power of 2/3?

Maybe we should all get RPN calculators to avoid parenthesis!

If you're raising to a pover less than one, you should always get a result which is less than the base. Therefore 5 to the power of .666 ( which is 2/3) you get 2.924, which is less than base 5. Not too hard i'd say.

Why not covert 2/3 to decimal of .667 and come up with 2.335?
@JCalboy201

Because 2/3 is 0.66666667 .

In this case, one can use 0.667 if accuracy to just one decimal place is all that is needed. By the way, you came up with 2.335, which when cubed equals approximately 12.73 (rather than 25).
