The cosine of the other angle with which the angle to be found has 180 degrees is 4/8 or 1/2 and that means: 60 degrees (I didn't recognize the triangle as a 30-60-90 special right triangle, I blindly began to use the rule of cosine ( CAH :) ). Anyway, the angle to be found is 180 degrees minus 60 degrees = 120 degrees. Now I have to find out what the trick was. :)

The rule of cosines will do it even if you didn't recognise it as a 30-60-90 triangle (as I didn't!)

To do this in my head---divide all sides by 4 . Sides are now 12 and sqrt 3. square each gives 1 4and 3. 1+3=4 so its a right angle triangle. Thus 90/30/60. Thus 180 -60+120

No wonder people end up hating Math, this video is a good example of how Math shouldn't be taught.

Greetings. Certainly we can find the value of the external angle. Based on the details given, we shall use the laws of cosine to determine the required angle. First, we shall assume that we have a ABC triangle with line AB extended to D to get rather to form the external angle CBD. Now, we shall use the formula B^2=A^2+C^2-2ACCOSB to determine the value for angle ABC. Thereafter, we shall deduct the value of angle ABC from 180 degrees to determine the value of external angle CBD. Plugging in the figures gives (4×3^1/2)^2=4^2+8^2-2(4)(8)CosB 48=80-64CosB, -32=-64CosB, CosB=32/64=.5. That is angle B, ABC, equals 60 degrees. Consequently, our required external angle, CBD, is 180 degrees minus 60, angles on a straight line, 120 degrees. Lovely.

I recognized that it was a right-angled triangle using Pythagoras. Inverse cosine gave the inner acute angle of 60 deg. which meant the obtuse angle had to be 120 deg.

I get the trick. The arrow doesn't point directly at the angle but slightly towards the inside of the triangle to fool you into thinking that you meant the 60° angle on the inside of the triangle.

You did not tell how yon got 30 and 60 for the other two angles rather than say 40 an d 50 or 20 and 70. Is the key that the hypotenuse is double the length of the one side? That would hold no matter what the size of the triangle is. ------that is, the proportion of the sides would have to be maintained. in all such cases to derive 30 and 60 degrees.
