Possible Quarters: 1-22 (25¢ - $5.50). Possible Nickels: 108-3 ($5.40-15¢). Since the total number of coins is 25, it must be 22 quarters and 3 nickels. (22+3=25).

Pretty easy once you think about it. 22 Quarters which makes $5.50. That leaves 3 nickles left which makes $0.15. 5.50+0.15= $5.65

This is exactly the type of word problem that gave me nightmares decades ago. I’d have to literally play with actual coins and hope that the problem didn’t force me to try to solve something involving hundreds of coins. Set up equations to solve this? Not a prayer! Every teacher and every other person who looked at this and more or less instantly solved it (and others like it) somehow invented equations out of the air and never managed to convey to me just exactly what they were thinking at the time. The equations I could solve, but translating the words of the problem (any problem) into “mathese” was something no teacher was able to impart. At the time, I didn’t know what was confusing me so I couldn’t explain to the teachers just exactly what it was that I didn’t understand. Teachers get frustrated pretty fast when a student can only repeat, “I don’t get it.”

Solve using system of linear equations where "A" is the number of quarters and "B" is the number of nickels. .25A + .05B = 5.65 A + B = 25 100(.25A + .05B = 5.65) 25A + 5B = 565 -5(A + B = 25) -5A - 5B = -125 25A + 5B = 565 -5A - 5B = -125 20A = 440 [A = 22] (22) + B = 25 [B = 3] Therefore the answer is 22 quarters and 3 nickels.

Q is the amount of quarters and N is the amount of nickels: 25c . Q + 5c . N = 565c First !!! simpify this equation with dividing by 5c: 5Q + N = 113 Q + N = 25 so N = 25 - Q (also could take Q = 25 - N but that is giving big numbers again) Substitute N with ( 25 - Q ) : 5Q + ( 25 - Q ) = 113 so 5Q + 25 - Q = 113 -> 4Q = 113 - 25 = 88 Resulting in Q = 88 / 4 = 22 quarters and N = 25 - 22 = 3 nickels Check: 25c . 22 + 5c . 3 = 550c + 15c = 565c and a very happy cashier with all that precious coins.

I solved this in my head by determining how many nickels would be equal to $5.65. With 20 nickels per dollar, we would have 100 nickels, plus the 13 nickels for the additional $0.65, for a total of 113 nickels. We know that there were only a total of 25 coins used to pay the $5.65 bill. So, 88 of the calculated 113 nickels would have to be substituted with quarters, which would be 22 quarters, leaving 3 nickels. Easy peezy, and no calculator or pen and paper required.
@MargaretCutt-um8iq10 ай бұрын
i figured out how many quarters would be the highest number in the 5.65. then what was left would be nickels. i fail to see why they would teach things to be more complicated than they need to be.

Rather unfair to write a question that dont provide the necessary info .. I get that a quarter is a "quarter dollar" so 25c - but nickels ? no clue. Cant you write coin values in their actual cent value? Back to the question .. 25 quarters would give $6.25 - so a few less - than $5.65 from the question will yield 22 quarters first. and the remainder of 15 cents is divisible by 3 from 25 - 22 ..so 22 quarters and 3 5c "nickels" though that cent value was not provided

@@Beliar275 I can see where you're coming from but real life is the same. You pretty much always have to look for bits of info from here-and-there to be able to make sense of any real-world questions. If you hate doing that so much that you don't bother, you'll end up in the dark compared to people who do the extra leg-work. It's not hard, irritating at times, maybe but, you often end up learning a lot more than you expected 8f you make the small effort.
