He has to show the backstory of each question so that people gain mastery of the math topics; as well as introduce himself/his courses since new people come to his channel every video and he should be supported so he can be new videos. He also teaches better than my college studies does so he helps out regardless. Just skip around if you need to watch the video in a shorter amount of time...

First glance I skipped cause it looked simple. On the toilet now and saw this again. I was like... What if this was selling art? $18 - ( - $30) = ?? This is an ACCOUNTing problem, so: 18.00 + 30.00 = 48.00 positive balance However, the instructor couldve written this in proper algebra style like 18 - (-30) You know to exchange the parens and operator to better read this expression, we are in fact ADDING positive units together instead of digging into debt. Still, this is a lesson that none of us should assume we know the answer on the spot (again, I initially assumed it would be negative!) I've been watching your algebra and post algebra videos, you are one of the guys helping me rekindle my love for math! Keep doing Wiseman's work, sir ♡♡♡

A simple example of encountering parentheses is looking at any cash register receipt that includes a product return or an amount deducted because an item was on sale. Of course cash register receipts are in column format and the refund amounts are usually shown as the amounts that in parentheses.

Hi John ; I think you are wrong about this parentheses issue in accounting. firstly; in accounting when you are presenting they usually use a column method to demonstrate the figures. and it is just for demonstration. they do not use that kind of symbolism in the actual calculus of it. secondly; as you correctly said a Parentheses means a negative amount or they just signify it by red color . thirdly; they will never put a negative in front of a parentheses in order to subtract the top number from the bottom number , because a pair of parentheses MEANS a negative value for a subtraction. think of it as your momentary net worth in a single sunny day walking downtown. for example: if you have $18 dollars in your pocket and you are walking down the street and your friend Joe walks up to you and hands you a $30 dollars I.O.U from last Sat. poker game, are you in debit for $48 dollars at that moment???? of course NOT!! If you hand him the $18 dollars, are you going to change the 30 to a 48 on the IOU or to a 12? of course you are changing it to a 12 , So at that moment you are still in arrears for the amount of $12 dollars not $48 dollars so the answer is ($12) as far as the accounting books are concerned. if you had a mini accounting journal and you always carried it in your pocket, after handing a $18 dollars to Joe, what would you put in your accounting Journal ??? please check your multiple choice answer's symbolism . Many thanks for all your help and all your teachings I think you are helping a lot of people. I saw your videos today by pure coincidence and I enjoyed it and you showed me the patience and method in which I have to try to explain math to my young ones or simply have them listen to you directly. I too used a few of your explanations to understand why certain things work the way they do. thank you and GOD bless Tony

As you are using accounting figures the number in () is negative, thus in standard format that is $18 - -$30= $48

Think of it as you have a balance of $18 and you get a refund on a purchase made last month of $30. It is recorded in the ledger as ($30). To put it back on the account you subtract that ($30) {$18 - ($30) = $48}

Could be wrong, but do not think the parentheses around the 30 implies minus. So my way of thinking is 18-30= -12.
@HR-wd6cw
@HR-wd6cw Ай бұрын
To the debt thing though in this particular problem, in this sense, the debt is owed to you, not that you owe the debt to someone, so that should be clarified although the way the problem is written, that may be clear to some. But at the same time if you see these two numbers without the minus sign, it would then indicate you'd subtract the 30 from the 18, and then you would get the -12, and this may be a concept that some people may not be familiar with as it's only seen in accounting and finance primarily (as was mentioned).

My point is that, in my understanding, you don't do math from left to right in accounting you do it from a ledger. The [-($30)] does not mean add $30. It means take an eraser and rub out the ($30) debit. {Negate the $30 Debit to the account.}
@victorjeanouellette1592

The $18 is a credit. The ($30) is a debit. Now negate (minus) the Debit leaves only the credit. Answer =$18

That was interesting, I have not been an accountant and I wouldn't have known that the parenthesis mean a negative number in accounting. Do we do it that way in the UK I wonder, I'll have to ask my stepson. I didn't see your earlier post but I would have done it that way. Goes to show even after 71 years, there is still a lot to learn.

Seems this might be important to work out when dealing with Debits and Credits as in accounting. I'm not an accountant though but I would call the answer at $18 because as a NON accountant i would view this as trying to solver a ledger problem.

I think the answer of $48 makes sense if you think of dollars on a number line. The difference of $18 to -$30 is 18 to zero which is 18 plus -30 to zero which is 30. 18 + 30 = 48.

Adding 2 negatives is a positive?
@dazartingstall6680
@dazartingstall6680 4 ай бұрын
If you mean in the same way that multiplying two negatives makes a positive, not really. Subtracting a negative turns the problem into the addition of a positive. So for instance 7 − (−3) = 7 + 3 = 10 But if we begin with a negative number and then subtract a negative, the result can still be negative: −7 − (−3) = −7 + 3 = −4 Or it can be positive: −7 − (−9) = −7 + 9 = 2

Just because you are subtracting a debt should not mean you are gaining a credit. If you owe someone $18 and they say to forget the debt, does not mean you suddenly have an ADDITIONAL $18!

Why is there an em-dash placed below the "$18" and above the "($30)"? Shouldn't there have been a minus sign (or en-dash) left of and level with "($30)"?

This confuses me as I see the accounting as different than the mathematics. I am seeing the negative sign '-' as NEGATING the accounting '($30)'. If you negate the debt then you have $18 left not 48.

The - sign is just an ordinary subtraction operator. This is a normal way of laying out subtraction of numbers in mathematics. Why would you assume it's anything different just because the numbers happen to be quantities of money?

The minus sign is neither on the 18 or the 30 which seems to make the question read 18 divided by 30 the answer being a minus quantity. This question is stupid its some kind of accounting code what about BODMAS etc the more I listened to this the deeper the hole he digs.
