Making good progress! A lot of you suggested magnets and I may try them at some point. But itd be tough to get the exact amount of attraction force i need, plus I would have to permanently alter the wood lane and it wouldnt be super easy to change if I epoxy magnets in. And pins would have a small amount of attraction to each other which isn’t similar to irl bowling #engineering #bowling #3dprinting #mechanicalengineering #stem

@@dannylumcreative Sorry to hijack this comment. Usually with miniature models, to make them seem physics accurate for the large scale you have to slowmo the video. It has to do with gravitational acceleration seemingly higher due to the "zoom" of the model. Basically, even tho the constant is the same for big and for small, you are zooming in on the small model, therefore the acceleration seems higher than it should be if it would be the big model. That effect may very well play role in the way you are trying to make the pins fall. They fall too fast.

You can take a real pin, measure it, then after you characterize the formulas that correspond to its mass, center of mass, volume, plastic deformation, and whatever other variable that impacts the movement of the pin. You can then scale down the process by using adimensional numbers to downsize the pins by how they are supposed to behave instead of by size. Hope this help

Shows how much engineering went into the original pin/lane designs, you’re being met with likely a lot of the same issues those engineers faced when developing the originals, just obviously on a smaller scale, which means your solutions are gonna be a little different for the same exact problems, pretty cool.

instead of weights may i suggest just putting weak magnets in the bases of the pins so they still can feel light when in midair but they have much better resistance when on the ground, make sure the magnets aren’t too strong though or else they could lock on to the other pins or other parts of the lane midair

People have said magnets. But i think you should make them ⅔ hollow, then fill with sand. Have a little hole at the top of the pins that allows you to fill it with sand. Have the area go 2/3 down like i said. Try using a very fine course sand and then a larger grit sand. See which works better. The size of the grains and how they lock together will determine balance. You can test different combinations of amounts of sand used and type of sand. Then you can add cotton to any of the hollow space you don't want to fill and to also keep the sand compacted.

You should attach a string to the top of each pin and a board with holes above it so that when you want to set the pins back up you can pull on the strings, pull them into the hole (which matches with pin positions) and then lower them back down so set-up is easier after each strike. This method is used in quite a few bowling alleys!

So their center of mass (and tip) is falling over the base, when you want the impact to cause the base and center of mass to swing out from underneath the tip. My unsolicited hypothesis is that you may actually want the friction with the ground to be to low to help that behavior. Also I suspect that yeeting the ball with more velocity so that the momentum transfer happens more quickly and violently may enable that behavior. Real lanes are slippy and they tend to really huck them suckers afterall.

For the pins, seeing those tungsten weights sparks an idea... Why not replace them with magnets? Then put a big magnet, or even electromagnet coils, underneath. You'd be augmenting gravity with magnetism, essentially you could set the "gravity" and thereby the effective weight of the pins. How keen they are to stay stood up. Then with just a knob and maybe a power transistor, you could control it.

I've not done any math for this idea, but if you gave the weight room to move vertically, it would resist wobble but allow the pin to have an easier time flying/rotating by adjusting the CG as its struck (if the point of impact is below the CG)

Have you thought about using more of a donut shape for the weight? If placed within the base, but not entirely too low, you should be able to get the spin, the balance, and still resist the bumps and tremors of the table. Few washers should work, if you can't find a better alternative. Tho I think they should be as secured in place as possible, otherwise they might begin to rattle after a few good games.

@@supercrafter7586 Lowering the center of mass reduces wobbling. If you look at static rigid body mechanics, the locations of the center of mass and the contact point(s) are the only thing that matters. I recommend googling "stability and toppling". Focusing the mass towards the center does nothing. (except for lowering the angular inertia, which would actually make the wobbling slightly worse, though increasing the mass by adding a metal 'wick' would do the opposite)
